West Visayas State University once again proved that it is an institution to be reckoned with. On February 17, 2017 at the Century Park Hotel, Malate Manila, WVSU was awarded as the number 1 performing SUC in accreditation that bested the other 110 member institutions during the 30th Accrediting Agency for Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (AACCUP), Inc. Annual National Conference.

To qualify, each SUC had to fill out a checklist in order to gauge their level of competency with other candidates. The criteria for selection included the (1) total number of programs offered vis-a-vis the total number of accredit able programs in all campuses, (2) number of faculty accreditors who are actively involved in accreditation, (3) capability of the SUC’s internal quality assurance office (IQA), (4) the support of the administration to IQA, and lastly, (5) AACCUP awards received in the last 5 years.

Dr. Alona Belarga, the Director of the Office of Instruction and Quality Assurance (DIQA) shares “presently we have a total of eighty (80) program offerings in all our campuses with 50 undergraduate degrees and 30 graduate degrees. Of those, we have 23 who passed Level 1 accreditation, 32 which are Level 2 accredited, 7 Level 3 accredited, and 10 which passed the Level 4 accreditation.” “We also have a lot of faculty accreditors who are actively involved in accreditation. Specifically, Prof. Abaleña is on his second term as Board of Trustees of AACCUP while our president, Dr. Sorolla, was formerly AACCUP President and Chairman of the BOT. As you can see, we always respond positively to all AACCUP invitations, and our university administration has been very supportive and instrumental towards all our campuses in their accreditation and certification activities.”

The Office of the DIQA is dedicated and committed to assisting the different units/ campuses in the offering of quality and innovative curricular programs in terms of assisting all departments of all campuses in implementing activities ensuring quality and excellence in instruction. DIQA also supports the development of instruction, policies, and procedures to guarantee high standards in performance. It also manages the University quality review processes and accreditation visits. It likewise liaises, shares, and disseminates good practices in quality assurance throughout the University and all its campuses. Lastly, DIQA facilitates the university’s participation in quality assurance.

Presently bestowed with this esteemed recognition from AACCUP, Dr. Belarga believes that the challenge to sustain excellence must be there. “We always make room for continuous improvement of the system. It is never an easy task, but I am confident that with the commitment and effort of everyone from the students, faculty, staff, administrators, and top management, we can make this happen”. To reinforce her objective, she proudly announced that her DIQA team was able to come up with a Quality Assurance Plan for 2017. “We listed activities as well as possible features we think could greatly add to the enhancement of our programs. We also scheduled mock accreditation activities in order to monitor and follow-up each department. There is also an extensive curriculum review to make sure that programs are updated”.
