“Building a Science Nation: Utilizing Science Knowledge to Cope with Global Health Problems.”  This was the theme for this year’s Science Day Celebration conducted by the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) - Physical Science Department of West Visayas State University (WVSU) on September 5, 2015.

             The event was spearheaded by Prof. Grace A. Manajero, Head of Physical Science Department, together with the faculty members and Physical Science students. Various activities comprised the half-day celebration. Inclusive on these were Fun Run, Opening Program, Zumba Dance and Public Research Forum. The official declaration of the opening of the celebration was done by Dr. Leah Mae C. Cabalfin, Dean of College of Arts and Sciences.

Lamudi Philippines, in its continuing concern for the socio-economic development of the country, provides a scholarship program amounting to Php20,000 for ONE semester to ONE exemplary college student. The student will be guaranteed a paid internship at Lamudi Philippines in his or her department of choice.. Please note that this is not a year-long scholarship.

Jose Kreisher Rae Bacoso Foscablo got 88.50% rating securing a fifth place overall while Gwyn Panes Celo scored 88.17% for a no. 9 ranking in the Physician’s Licensure Exam (PLE) given by the Board of Medicine last September 10,11 ,17 and 18, 2016. Both are graduates of West Visayas State University College of Medicine.

2,899 passed this year’s PLE out of 3,695 that took it. University of Santo Tomas’ Jeri Charlotte Co Albano topped the said exam with a rating of 89.50%. The exam was administered by the Professional Regulatory Board of Medicine, and took place in selected testing centers in Manila, Cebu and Davao cities. Results of the exam were released by the Philippine Regulation Commission (PRC) on the evening of September 22, 2016.

    The Center for Research and Innovations in Science and Mathematics Education (CRISMEd) at West Visayas State University will collaborate with the National Organization of Science Teachers and Educators (NOSTE) to host the NOSTE 2016 International Research Conference and Seminar Workshop on October 7-9, 2016 at DepEd RELC Ecotech, Lahug, Cebu City and Bohol Island, Philippines. The theme of the conference is Science Education through Inquiry for Sustainable Development. The conference will include Key Note, plenary sessions, parallel sessions, workshops, and outdoor science exploration. Participants of the conference includes science education scholars, practitioners, policy-makers, teachers and science educators in all academic levels (elementary, secondary, tertiary), and researchers in science and science related fields.

The new College of Medicine (COM) building was inaugurated with a big celebration lasting the entire day of July 15, 2016.

Alumni, students, and faculty joined COM Dean Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz, President Luis M. Sorolla, VP for Medical and Allied Sciences Dr. Giovanni de los Reyes, and members of the WVSU Board of Directors during the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The university’s newest addition is located at the right wing of Roxas Hall and was built to house additional rooms dedicated for research and laboratory work.

West Visayas State University College of Nursing once again posted a 100% passing in the June 2016 Nurse Licensure Examination (NLE)  with five (5) topnotchers. 

All of the 96 examinees from WVSU made it successfully to the roster of passers, led by John Michael Canita at 4th place (86.20), Kathereen Roman Canindo and Jodith Bygie Mediana at 8th place (85.40), Ma. Jarsi Rheyda Tejada at 9th (85.20), and Pamela Aya Bernada at 10th place (85.00).

Prof. Liberty R. Porras and Mr. Jemuel B. Garcia, Jr., OIC-Dean and College Secretary of the College of PESCAR, West Visayas State University, respectively, clinched the highest awards given as nine out of ten applicants passed the 1st Philippine Folk Dance Teacher Accreditation Program in Dakak Park and Beach Resort, Dapitan City, Zamboanga Del Norte, May 22-27.
Prof. Porras and Mr. Garcia were given Grade B: Silver together with one applicant from Palawan State University and six others were awarded Grade C: Bronze in the said accreditation where the applicants underwent a training program, document evaluation, written examination, class demonstration, interpretation and practical examination.

BESTING 1,000 entries from 18 countries, the entry of Asst. Prof. Hazel P. Villa of the College of Education (COE) was adjudged international champion in the Professional Category of the US Peace Corps’ Write On! Creative Writing Competition (WOC) held in the first quarter of 2016.

Placing third in the national level (Philippines) of College Category 3 was COE junior student Micah Tubola, a BSED English major and a student of Prof. Villa in the subject Creative Writing.
