Short-Term Programs

The WVSU Center for Foreign Language offers students the opportunity to improve their proficiency in English, and to learn other basic languages like Mandarin, Spanish, Japanese, French, German, Korean and Filipino for Foreigners. Short intensive courses are offered on a two to four-week schedule. Classes are held 10 to 20 hours a week at the WVSU CFL, WVSU University Campus.

PROGRAMS OFFERED
WVSU CFL offers different types of credited or non-credited English language programs: A General English Proficiency Development program, special programs, as well as basic and advanced programs in Mandarin, Spanish, Japanese, French, Korean, German, and Italian.

GENERAL ENGLISH PROGRAM
The English program consists of courses aimed at developing fundamental language skills. These are intended as classes in English for beginners, intermediate, or advanced students.

Registration fee of $100 is charged only once to an incoming student regardless of the number of courses he or she enrolls in.

Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary

A course especially designed for students who want to become better readers, improve their reading speed, comprehension, vocabulary, and sharpens test-taking skills that will help them improve their performance in the classroom and other examinations they may take.

Conversational English 1 and 2
This class is designed to improve the speaking of English. It requires students to possess a certain level of knowledge of and ability to Speak English. The class activities will give the students many chances to practice their speaking and listening skills which will help them advance to a level of fluency.

English Grammar
This course provides a review and mastery of the grammatical structures to enrich the student’s proficiency in the use of the English language both in oral and written communication. It aims to correct common errors in grammar, acquire adequate vocabulary and realize the relationship between words, group of words and sentences.

Business English
This course equips students, teachers, businessmen, administrators, executives, clerical personnel, etc. with technical skills in writing business letters, reports, proposal and other communications for themselves and the company or office they work for. It focuses on acquisition skills in effective written expressions and exposure to specific communication styles at home, at school, and at work.

English For Foreign Students
This course especially targets the needs of foreign students particularly in listening and speaking, grammar and writing, interpersonal and group communication, reading comprehension and literature. It uses varied written and oral activities designed to increase students’ communicative competence.

Speech and Public Speaking
This course serves as an introduction to public speaking. It includes preparation of the manuscript and delivery of public speeches for special occasions: the speech of introduction, presentation, acceptance, campaign, impromptu, the oral report, the 3-minute speech, etc.

Speech Improvement
This course includes lessons in pronunciation, word and sentences stress, intonation exercises designed to stimulate self-expression through storytelling, social amenities, reports and oral presentations, dialogues, improvisations, public speaking, declamation, oration, dramatization, supporting an opinion, and oral interpretation of literary pieces. Besides developing poise and self-confidence in facing the audience, this course also strives to correct errors in grammar that interfere with correct speech. At the end of the course, a program will showcase student’s accomplishments.

English Proficiency Course
This 54-hour course will help enhance and reinforce the communication skills of students who are using English as a foreign language.  It will also provide them an enriching learning experience.

TESOL(Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages)
This is a comprehensive course in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). It aims to introduce the learners to all key areas of language learning: listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary and learning strategies. Development of materials and alternative methods in language learning are also included. By presenting portraits of teachers and learners in action in the classroom, WVSU Center for Foreign Languages makes an important practical contribution to the language learning and teaching.

TOEIC
This 54-hour course is designed to prepare professionals and students who intend to take the Test of English for International Communication which is an English language proficiency test for people whose native language is not English. This course exposes them to test -taking strategies and provides them various language exercises that will greatly enhance their listening and reading skills.

CLASSES
The Center maintains small class size to enable the teachers to attend to individual students' needs. Activities emphasize spontaneous interaction and students' active participation in using spoken and written English.

Students have the opportunities to interact with students of other nationalities through:

Teachers at the WVSU Center for Foreign Languages are language specialists, professionally trained, and experienced in the teaching of the courses offered.
