WVSU joins 9th SEA-Teacher Evaluation Meeting

West Visayas State University joined in the 9th SEA-Teacher Evaluation Meeting in Wiang Inn Hotel, Chiang Rai, Thailand on June 21-22, 2024.

Prof. Esperval Cezhar H. Cadiao, College Secretary of College of Education (COE) and Dr. Verna Jade Janay, Chairperson of the Early Childhood Education Division (COE), represented West Visayas State University (WVSU).

This annual event served as a platform for educators from Southeast Asian countries to come together to discuss and evaluate the SEA-Teacher Programme.

During the meeting, Prof. Cadiao and Dr. Janay actively engaged in discussions on important matters about the next batch of the student exchange program and other related concerns that were addressed by the convening body.

Moreover, they initiated discussions with various participating universities to establish possible partnerships related to enhance student exchange initiatives, collaborative research activities, and academic engagements.

As the SEA-Teacher Project continues to grow, its impact on teacher education and cross-cultural collaboration remains profound, fostering a more interconnected and globally aware educational community in Southeast Asia.

WVSU, UTM collab for International Seminar on Research and Academic

West Visayas State University (WVSU) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) initiated their collaborative partnership by hosting an International Seminar on Research and Academic on June 13, 2024 at UTM, Johor Bahru, Malaysia.

The hybrid seminar was the result of the forged Letter of Collaboration (LOC) between the two esteemed institutions.

Topics on 𝙋𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩’𝙨 𝙃𝙤𝙪𝙧: 𝙏𝙤𝙥 𝙈𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙑𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣; 𝙅𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙣𝙚𝙮 𝙩𝙤 𝘽𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙝 𝙐𝙣𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙮 and 𝙉𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙏𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙄𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙝, 𝙄𝙣𝙣𝙤𝙫𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙀𝙭𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝘾𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 were discussed by Dr. Greta G. Gabinete -VP for Research, Innovation and Extension.

Prof. Edel Subong Csoka, Director of International and Local Linkages Office discussed 𝙉𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙄𝙕𝙉 𝙞𝙣 𝙂𝙡𝙤𝙗𝙖𝙡 𝙎𝙤𝙪𝙩𝙝, in which she underlined the importance of IZN in higher education institutions and the initiatives in the Philippines.

Meanwhile, the topic on 𝙉𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝘼𝙘𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙢𝙞𝙘 𝙀𝙘𝙤𝙨𝙮𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙢 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙥𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨 was presented by Dr. Rosario Clarabel C. Conteras, Campus Administrator WVSU CC; Dr. Elias C. Olapane, Head Campus Research, Innovation and Development talked on 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙝 𝙏𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙨 𝘼𝙣𝙙 𝘾𝙖𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝘽𝙪𝙞𝙡𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝘾𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙨 𝙄𝙣 𝙂𝙡𝙤𝙗𝙖𝙡 𝙎𝙤𝙪𝙩𝙝; Dr. Zuraidah Mohd Don, Professor Language Academy FSSH, UTM tackled 𝙇𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙪𝙖𝙜𝙚-𝙄𝙣-𝙀𝙙𝙪𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙋𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙘𝙮 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙋𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙣 𝙈𝙖𝙡𝙖𝙮𝙨𝙞𝙖; and Dr. Zaidatun Tasir, Professor School of Education FSSH, UTM concluded the discussion on 𝙏𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜-𝙡𝙚𝙙 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙝.

An open forum was held after the entire discussions, where focus on internationalization activities of WVSU were highlighted.

WVSU, UTM forge partnership thru LOC signing

West Visayas State University (WVSU) further strengthens international linkages as it officially marks a new partnership with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) on June 12, 2024 through a Letter of Collaboration (LOC) Signing Ceremony where university officials from both distinct universities were present.

The signing ceremony led by Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz WVSU President and Dr. Mohd Shafry Mohd Rahim, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic & International, solidifies both UTM and WVSU’s commitment to this collaboration.

Present in the signing ceremony were Prof. Edel Carmela Csoka, Director of WVSU International and Local Linkages Office; Dr. Greta G. Gabinete, Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension; Dr. Rosario Clarabel C. Contreras, Campus Administrator, WVSU Calinog Campus; Dr. Elias C. Olapane, Head, Campus Research, Innovation, and Development; Prof. Ts. Dr. Abd Latif Saleh, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, UTM Kuala Lumpur Campus and representatives from UTM International Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru.

The two university heads expressed their excitement in collaborating on areas towards modeling best practices in research, academe, resource sharing, inclusive education and innovation in both institutions.

President Villaruz highlighted the significance of the WVSU team’s visit, expressing optimism about the positive impact it would have on research collaborations and academe. This visit laid the groundwork for a promising research and academic partnership.

WVSU visits Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Perak, Malaysia

West Visayas State University (WVSU) visits Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) Perak, Malaysia, June 10-11, 2024, to discuss possible collaborations between the two institutions.

WVSU is represented by Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz, President WVSU; Prof. Edel Subong-Csoka, Director, International and Local Linkages Office; Dr. Greta G. Gabinete, Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension; Dr. Rosario Clarabel C. Contreras, Campus Administrator, WVSU Calinog Campus; and Dr. Elias C. Olapane, Head of Campus Research, Innovation, and Development.

The discussion includes best practices and trends in research, teaching and learning, and resource sharing, inclusive education and innovation in both institutions.

UPSI was represented by Dr. Abdul Talib bin Mohamed Hashim, Dean of UPSI’s Faculty of Human Development; Dr. Nordin bin Mamat, Director of CPRI; Dr. Fatanah binti Ramlee, Deputy Dean of Research and Innovation UPSI; and Dr. Kway Eng Hock, Head of Special Education Faculty of Human Development.

WVSU’s global rise continues: soars in 2024 WURI Rankings
West Visayas State University (WVSU) continues its climb in global recognition, securing Rank 210 on the Global Top 300 Innovative Universities category in the World University Rankings for Innovation (WURI) 2024. The announcement was made during the WURI Conference 2024 on June 7, 2024 at Franklin University Switzerland, Lugano, Switzerland.

WVSU has also been ranked in the following categories:
- Rank 47 in Crisis Management (A5) Top 100
- Rank 23 in Support for Global Resilience (A8) Top 100
- Rank 83 in Student Support and Engagement (A1) Top 100
The WURI is organized by the Institute for Policy & Strategy on National Competitiveness (IPSNC), and co-hosted by four organizations: the Hanseatic League of Universities (HLU), whose membership includes more than 120 universities worldwide.

Participating institutions are evaluated in 13 categories with the criteria on innovativeness, implementability, and impact as main yardsticks. The methodology entails the thorough steps of submission of entries, elimination, evaluation, peer assessment, final checking, and publication.

This recognition demonstrates the University’s ongoing rise in international reputation, and sustained drive for academic excellence.

BAFL studes take Korean immersion online

Despite the CoVid-19 pandemic, the third year students of Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Languages (BAFL) continued to embrace the opportunities in Internationalization by immersing for a month with a Korean University for the Korean Language Immersion.
          The Korean Language Immersion is an academic requirement and privilege for Korean majors to learn the language with instructors from Pusan National University in South Korea. The immersion kicked off May 24, 2021 and ended June 25, 2021.
          Supposedly, the top students from the class were the ones to experience the conduct of the immersion during the summer break last year but due to travel restrictions, they were given a single option—a virtual learning.
The Korean Language Immersion is highly beneficial to these students who study foreign languages because they were able to have conversations with native Korean speakers.
“We are not just memorizing or observing things, but we have the chance to practice or execute what we learned in present and future social encounters,” says Jeho Nicolas Cantara, Chairperson of BAFL-3A.
“Through learning another language, it is not just knowing various grammar rules, speaking tones, spelling and vocabulary, but you’re also exposing yourself to the country’s history, culture, and traditions. There, you get to see the beauty of the language.”
The online immersion aims to introduce the BAFL students to the Korean rules of grammar, content reading, essay writing, various Korean proverbs, traditions, and festivities.
          According to Cantara, the intermittent internet connection was their greatest enemy during the immersion. He pointed out how lucky they are on their Korean instructors who were very considerate of their situations. “We had kind and understanding PNU teachers. They were truly concerned with our circumstances and were willing to help us out.”
“They may be far away from us but they made us feel comfortable, ” he added.
The BAFL students take pride in their class presentation. Many of the students stepped out of their comfort zone. They gained confidence in speaking Korean through various online activities.
“Plus, our teachers got the chance to know us better and get a glimpse of our personalities which we don’t usually show on a regular online class,” Cantara stated.
