  • WVSU inks int’l exchange program with Spain’s Univ of Deusto

    ILOILO City — A representative of the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union from Universidad de Deusto visited the West Visayas State University (WVSU) on March 28, 2022 in view of a cooperation for the exchange of students and/or academic staff.
    Dr. Edurne Bartolome, a social scientist and PhD lecturer at the Universidad de Deusto paid a courtesy call to the Office of WVSU President Joselito Villaruz, currently represented by OIC President Celina Gellada.
    She was also welcomed by Project FORTH (Formation of Teachers in Challenged Areas) Coordinator and WVSU Vice President Ma. Asuncion Christine Dequilla and Project FORTH trainer and module writer Dr. Purita Bilbao who will be accompanying Dr. Bartolome in Iloilo and Aklan until April 1, 2022 when she returns to Spain.
    WVSU and University of Deusto’s agreement “commits to respect the quality requirements of the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education in all aspects of the organization and management of the mobility, in particular the recognition of the credits (or equivalent) awarded to students by the partner institution.”
    The above Inter-institutional agreement 2021-2022 has the University of Deusto assessing applicants of WVSU in a selection process of who best fits the academic offerings of the said University whereas University of Deusto sends its students and professors to WVSU.
    Signing the agreement for University of Deusto was Dr. Alex Rayon Jerez, vice rector for International Relations and for WVSU, Ms. Edel Carmela Subong-Csoka, director of the International and Local Linkages Office. /PN

  • Vape bill exposes young ‘vulnerable’ consumers to health risks, endangers already weak enforcement

    Two senators – Pia Cayetano and Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan – voted against SB 2239 on third reading. Only Cayetano consistently opposed the bill and said she was “beyond disappointed and beyond saddened” by its approval. Three days after the bill hurdled the Senate, the DOH slammed the “retrogressive” measure that “undermines the country’s progress in tobacco and control,” saying that it puts Filipino youth at risk. If passed into law, the bill will “expose our youth to harmful and addictive substances by making vapor products enticing and easily accessible,” the press release read. The bill stripped the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the regulatory authority over e-cigarettes and its components as a consequence of their reclassification as consumer products falling under the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). To health experts, the measure involves public health issues and should have stayed with the FDA for regulation, adding that people should not wait for vaping-related deaths to happen when parallel harms with traditional tobacco have already been proven in studies. After the sessions resume on January 17, the Senate and the House will harmonize their respective versions of the bill and ratify the conference committee report, then submit an enrolled copy to Malacañang. The DOH, FDA, several medical professional organizations and health experts, youth groups and tobacco control advocates are counting on the president to stick to his anti-smoking and anti-vaping position and veto the proposed law that defies the policy he laid down in 2019.

  • West Visayas State University is actively engaged in CALOHEA

    West Visayas State University is one of the 31 HEIs across 8 ASEAN countries, and 5 European states engaged in CALOHEA Project. The Project measures Competences and Learning Outcomes in Higher Education in Asia, a Project of the Erasmus+ Programme. It is coordinated by the University of Groningen in the Netherlands with the ASEAN University Network (AUN) partner agency.

     

    CALOHEA operates through three Subject Area Groups: Civil Engineering, Medicine, and Teacher Education. Contributing to the internationalization of higher education institutions in South-East Asia, The Project is developing a series of interrelated measures in three Key Recognition Mechanisms:

     

    The creation and use of regional subject-specific qualifications and assessment reference frameworks to permit greater comparability of institutional degree program profiles
    Installment of the culture of Student Workload Measurement as an integral part of curriculum design
    Implementation of authentic assessment of internationally comparable Learning Outcomes in degree programs

      • Grade 11 Report Card ( complete face with Name of Student, General Weighted Average and signatures of the Class Adviser and School Principal)

    4. Take a portrait photo of yourself following the Photo ID Requirements Guide.

    The photograph must:

    a. be passport standard (35x45mm)

    b. Pixels: 350 x 450 pixels minimum

    c. be in portrait orientation (i.e., higher than it is wide)

    d. be taken with your eyes open and clearly visible (no sunglasses or tinted glasses and no hair across your eyes)

    e. show your full head (70 to 80% of the photograph), without any head covering unless you wear one for religious beliefs or medical reasons

    f. show you on your own

    g. be in colour

    h. be taken within the last 12 months

    i. be clear and in sharp focus, with a clear difference between your face and a plain light background.

    The image should be less than 5 MB in size and in JPG/JPEG format. Most digital cameras and smartphones save photographs as a JPG/JPEG file. You can find the file size of the image by right clicking the file and selecting “Properties”.

    A photograph not meeting the requirements will be rejected.  Refer to the image resizer guide on how to resize the image file to 5 MB or less.

    5. Check your valid email address in this format: lastname@gmail.com or firstname.lastname@gmail.com. If none of the format is available, try adding your birth year or birthday at the end of your email (e.g. firstname.lastname0102@gmail.com).   • WVSU launches institutional internationalization

    The urn, a West Visayas State University symbol, oozes with life as it records the past, symbolizes the present, and inspires the future. As the era of today heads towards internationalization, the university courageously rejected the notion of getting left behind.

    WVSU braves the arena of internationalization by conducting an impactful event termed as #ReSpACE: The Redesign of Specialized Access to Connectivity and Engagement – A Glocalized Delivery of Internationalization Programs and Partnerships. The university, through the International and Local Linkages Office (ILLO), with its dynamic Director Edel Carmela Subong-Csoka, incredibly materialized the international meeting of minds on December 20-22, 2021.

    The entire WVSU community and its passionately driven University President, Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz unconditionally united to welcome with wide open arms both the perks and perils of internationalization.

    The 3-day online event was full of messages of gratitude as expressed by the WVSU community. The resource persons effectively brought inspiration and motivation as they shared their expertise on internationalization.

    As the strengths and key niches of the university were identified, WVSU became prepared to launch and sustain its internationalization program.

    The 3-day virtual activity was only the start of the promising future of the university as the WVSU became completely ready to conquer the world.

  • CILPI to conduct 1st International Students’ Day event

    West Visayas State University (WVSU), through the Center for International Linkages and Public Information (CILPI) ,will hold its first International Students’ Day celebration, in partnership with University Distance Education, Center for Foreign Languages, and the Foreign Languages Students’ Society, the official student body organization of Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Languages in WVSU.

    With the theme, “WVSU Students Around the World: Learning as One for Environment, Equality, and Peace”, the event aims for participants to learn different cultures, to recognize the University’s international students and WVSU graduates excelling around the globe, and to develop strong camaraderie among local and international students of the University.

  • Palmos makes it to ASEAN human rights education workshop

    Dr. Rejie F.Palmos, Director of West Visayas State University Center for Peace Education (WVSU CPE), was accepted in the 5th Lecturer Workshop on Teaching Human Rights and/or Peace, which started October 11, 2021 and will end this November 18.
    The one-month event focuses on Developing Skills and Knowledge on Peace and Transformative Peacebuilding.
    The ASEAN University Network-Human Rights Education (AUN-HRE), the Institute of Human Rights and Peace Studies (IHRP), Mahidol University, the Strengthening Human Rights and Peace Research and Education in ASEAN/Southeast Asia (SHAPE-SEA) and the Research and Education for Peace, Universiti Sains Malaysia (REPUSM) with support of the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights at the University of Oslo are the organizers of the workshop.# -CILPI

  • Crisis mgt committee tackles f2f classes, protocols, communication plans

    The West Visayas State University Crisis Management Committee recently discussed the limited face-to-face classes, health and safety protocols, and communication plans.

    Presided by the Vice President for Medical and Allied Sciences (VPMAS) and Assistant Incident Commander, Dr. Celina Gellada, the University Crisis Management Committee gathered for a virtual meeting.

    The limited face-to-face classes supposedly to be implemented this academic year 2021-2022 has been delayed due to the  CoVid-19, especially that the Delta variant is affecting the city and also because of Iloilo City being under the Modified Enchanced Community Quarantine (MECQ). Dr. Joselito Villaruz, WVSU president and the Incident Commander of the Committee , clarified that the limited face-to-face classes will only be allowed in areas, which are under General Community Quarantine (GCQ) and the University should strictly maintain health and safety measures.

    Safety Officer and the Director of the University Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office, Mr. Ian Van Sumagaysay presented updates on safety and health protocols implemented in the campus. The University is prepared when it comes to retrofitted classrooms, signage and directions, and policies approved by the Board of Regents. The University also has its own holding/quarantine facility, just in case there will be cases.

    Dr. Roumila Mendoza of the College of Medicine shared that some students have problems when it comes to their boarding houses, because some boarding houses are not meant for quarantine—the bathrooms and toilets are for common use of the tenants—and also some students were discriminated because they were part of the contact tracing list. One incident was, one student had to be forced out of her boarding house.

    Mr. Julius Undar, the Chief Administrative Officer of the University and Operations Section and Logistics Chief, updated on the number of vaccinated faculty and staff: As of September 3, 74% of the faculty are fully vaccinated; 76% of the regular staff and of the job order employees, respectively, have already received full doses.

    The Center for International Linkages and Public Information (CILPI), with its director Ms. Edel Carmela Subong-Csoka presented a communication plan, which focuses on townhall and stakeholders’ meetings, information campaigns, and press releases, including the updating of data on CoVid 19 cases and vaccination to be included on the FaceBook page and the University website.

    The University Crisis Management Committee was formed early this year to prepare the University for possible limited face-to-face classes and to ensure monitoring of safety- and health-conscious University operations.

  • WVSU ASEAN Day showcases student outputs

    West Visayas State University considers diversity a beauty. To prove this, one of the activities of the ASEAN Day on August 27, 2021, was the more than 1-hour FaceBook livestreaming of different member-countries of the Association of SouthEast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and ASEAN-related initiatives by the third year students of Bachelor of Science in Development Communication (BSDC) and the selected fourth year students of the Bachelor of Arts in Journalism (BAJ).

    The Facebook livestream showcased these students’ outputs, facilitated and compiled by the University’s Center for International Linkages and Public Information (CILPI). The students of WVSU shared their knowledge about cultural diversity, connecting and converging ASEAN, and talked about how ideal it is to travel to the member-countries of ASEAN through series of virtual podcasts hosted by Bachelor of Science in Development Communication students Rose Coleen Rubio,  Reymart Eufracio, and Iris Arboleda. Also included was a video presentation on inclusivity, focusing on persons with disabilities by Cindy Jade Seares, also a BSDC student, and the different proposed communication plans and initiatives on promoting ASEAN to the world.

    Fourth year Bachelor of Arts in Journalism students Jonar Dorado, Zennia Mirasol, and Ivy Pepito contributed to the ASEAN Day by making videos of the ASEAN hymn and facts about the ASEAN.

    The Permanent Representative of the Philippines to the ASEAN based in Jakarta Indonesia, Ambassador Noel Servigon sent his message to the WVSU community:  “…through these activities, we would further promote our sense of regional identity in the Southeast Asia”.  He expressed that he is looking forward to more engagements in the University through CILPI.

    The WVSU ASEAN Day also had the Panel Discussion on Women in the ASEAN , with invited panelists from Thailand, Indonesia,Singapore, Philippines, and Lao PDR, and a guest from one of WVSU’s partner universities in Taiwan.# -Ivy Pepito/CILPI
