    WVSU completes ISO surveillance audit, endorsed to maintain certification

    West Visayas State University (WVSU) has successfully completed its two-day ISO 9001:2015 surveillance audit, with auditors recommending the continued validity of the university’s certification. 

    The audit, conducted Sept. 15–16, assessed WVSU’s quality management system and gave positive feedback, advising that the certification be maintained. 

    Lead auditor Dr. Catherine Talao-Sigua, together with auditors John Joseph Denoga, Gwendolyn Red, and Kevin Castillon, spearheaded the evaluation with the support of university officials. 

    The opening meeting was held at the main campus, followed by site visits to the Lambunao and Janiuay campuses. At Lambunao, Campus Administrator Dr. Cheryll Dawal and unit heads participated in the audit. At Janiuay, Campus Administrator Dr. Guiller P. Pendon, along with deans and officials, facilitated the evaluation of academic programs and support units. 

    Key officials from the main campus also assisted. Dr. Peter Arnie D. Paris, vice president for administration and finance, and Dr. Alona M. Belarga, director of instruction, supported the Lambunao audit. At Janiuay, Dr. Ma. Asuncion Christine V. Dequilla, vice president for academic affairs; Dr. Greta G. Gabinete, vice president for research, innovation, and extension; and Dr. Elizabeth M. Magallanes, director of quality assurance, joined the activities. 

    On the second day, the auditors focused on the main campus, reviewing degree programs, offices, and top management. The audit closed with findings and recommendations for improvement. 

    “The university affirms its commitment to institutional excellence, transparency, and accountability by actively addressing the findings of this year’s ISO audit process, including the observations, opportunities for improvement, and non-conformance,” said Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz, WVSU president. 

    The auditors issued their final recommendation to maintain certification on Sept. 16.

    WVSU concludes 2025 Pag-iririmaw, hails College of Education overall champion

    After a series of competitions against various colleges, the College of Education was crowned this year’s overall champion. 

    For the highlight, the Sambuwa sang mga Abilidadan took place at the WVSU Cultural Center, with the College of Education, College of Business and Management, and College of PESCAR emerging as the top three finalists for the final showdown. 

    The College of Education was declared the champion, followed by the College of PESCAR as first runner-up and the College of Business and Management as second runner-up. 

    In the Hugyaw Sayaw competition, special awards went to the College of PESCAR for best choreography and to the College of Nursing for best in costume and props. 

    Major awards included the College of PESCAR as champion, the College of Nursing as first runner-up, the College of Communication as second runner-up, and the College of Education as third runner-up. 

    Following the individual competition awards, overall ratings were announced, with the College of Education securing the top spot, the College of PESCAR as first runner-up, and the College of Nursing as second runner-up. 

    After the awards ceremony, students enjoyed a Band Night and DJ music, showcasing stylish yet personal outfits for a dress to impress segment of the event.

    WVSU Holds Forum on Media, Women, and Climate Change

    West Visayas State University (WVSU) held a lecture and forum titled “Media, Women, and Climate Change: Portrayals, Perspectives, and Politics” on Thursday, September 11, at 2:30 p.m. at the WVSU Rehearsal Room, Main Campus. 

    The event featured Dr. Ian Weber, an Australian journalist, writer, and novelist affiliated with Bond University and the University of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia. 

    Organized by the Public Affairs and Marketing Communications Office (PAMCO), in partnership with the College of Education’s SILAK Media and Iloilo Art Life, the forum aimed to deepen understanding of how media representations intersect with issues of gender and climate change, and to foster dialogue among students on these pressing global concerns. 

    Student publications and partners from the Gender and Development Office were invited to participate, recognizing the relevance of the discussion to journalism, gender advocacy, and social awareness. 

    “What is the difference between diversity of media and diversity of opinion? If all the media present the same opinion, you’re only going to get one perspective,” Weber told participants as he emphasized the need for plurality in media discourse. 

    Students also posed thought-provoking questions about the ethical dilemmas they may face as journalists and communicators in the university. 

    The forum encouraged active participation and critical discussions among students, strengthening their awareness of the media’s role in shaping perspectives on women and the environment. 

    Weber also recently spoke before English majors in a special lecture on autobiographical literature held on September 9 at the Center for Foreign Languages – Rehearsal Room. The lecture, organized by the English Majors’ Organization in partnership with the English Language Teaching Division of the College of Education, explored heroism and anti-heroism in personal narratives. 

    Drawing from his autobiographical novel Apted Park and his 35 years of professional writing, Weber discussed how contradictions shape authentic storytelling and highlighted how deconstructive readings influence literary perspectives. 

    These back-to-back talks highlight WVSU’s commitment to shaping critical thinkers through bold conversations on literature, media, and global issues.

    WVSU takes part in nationwide earthquake drill to boost disaster readiness

    West Visayas State University (WVSU) joined the 3rd quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) on Sep. 11, 2025 at 4 p.m., in response to the Office of Civil Defense’s call to strengthen preparedness and resilience. 

    The activity was spearheaded by the University Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (UDRRM), led by Mr. Ian Van Sumagaysay, UDRRM director, in coordination with the university constituents. Faculty, students, and staff practiced the “duck, cover, and hold” procedure for one minute after the alarm, following prescribed earthquake response steps. 

    The quarterly drill is part of a nationwide initiative to promote a culture of safety and readiness in the face of earthquakes and other disasters.

    Youth educators join forum with cast of ‘Quezon’ at WVSU

    Students and teachers from different schools gathered Monday afternoon at West Visayas State University Cultural Center for MLQ: Mga Lingering Questions on Leaders, Legacy, and Liberty, a Youth and Educators Forum featuring the cast and creators of the upcoming historical film Quezon. 

    The forum, held Sept. 8 from 1 to 5 p.m., combined dialogue on history and civic responsibility with a 10-minute special preview of the film directed by Jerrold Tarog. Acclaimed actor Jericho Rosales, who plays former President Manuel L. Quezon, headlined the panel alongside veteran stage and screen actor Bodjie Pascua, who portrays Raymundo Melliza, Iloilo’s second governor during the American occupation.

    They were joined by award-winning actress Therese Malvar, who plays Nadia Hernando, and Daphne Chiu-Soon, president and COO of TBA Studios, the production company behind the film. WVSU Film Society and the WVSU University Student Council played a crucial role in bringing this event to the University as organizers for this leg of the Bayaniverse forum. Historian Alvin Campomanes gave the participants an in-depth discussion on Manuel L. Quezon’s life as a statesman and as a Filipino. He also discussed Quezon’s major political and presidential decisions that continue to influence the nation today.

    The cast shared their reasons for accepting their respected roles and shared their preparations for the film and the significance of their historical figures they portrayed, director Jerrold Tarog, through a message, called upon the viewers and the students to be discerning and be critical of our political landscape, and Chiu-Soon underscored TBA Studios’ commitment to telling stories that both educate and entertain. 

    The gathering at WVSU is part of Dakila Collective, Active Vista, and TBA Studios’ educational roadshows to promote Quezon and strengthen historical awareness among the youth.

    WVSU joins 2025 PCSA Fun Run, earns recognition for strong delegation

    West Visayas State University (WVSU) participated in the 2025 Philippine Civil Service Anniversary (PCSA) Fun Run organized by the Civil Service Commission Regional Office VI at the Iloilo Freedom Grandstand earlier today, in celebration of the 125th PCSA with the theme “Bawat Kawani, Lingkod Bayani: Puso, Dangal, at Galing para sa Bayan.” 

    WVSU registered 85 employees to the fun run, one of the largest contingents from participating agencies. The University was also recognized with a Certificate of Appreciation for this strong turnout, received by Ms. Christine Jaspe of the Administrative Division.

    The fun run held simultaneously nationwide and in Region 6 through the University of Antique in Sibalom, drew almost 2,000 runners in Iloilo City and underscored the civil service’s commitment to wellness, solidarity, and public service.

    Proceeds will benefit the Pamanang Lingkod Bayani Program, which honors fallen public servants by providing financial assistance and educational support to their families. 

    By actively joining the event, WVSU reinforced its dedication to promoting unity, wellness, and excellence in public service—values at the heart of the civil service tradition.

    WVSU earns first-ever spot in Times Higher Education Impact Rankings

    For the first time in its history, West Visayas State University (WVSU) has earned a place in the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, marking a major milestone in its global journey toward academic excellence and sustainable development. 

    The university’s inclusion in the 2025 rankings was formally recognized during “Ranked & Recognized: A Celebration of PHEIs,” a national event organized by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and held at the CHED Central Office Auditorium in Quezon City on June 24, 2025. Representing the university at the ceremony was Dr. Ma. Asuncion Christine V. Dequilla, Vice President for Academic Affairs. 

    The Impact Rankings assess universities worldwide based on their contributions to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). WVSU ranked 1501+ overall, joining a select group of institutions recognized for advancing inclusive, sustainable, and transformative education. 

    WVSU made notable marks in several key SDGs:
    ✅ SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being – Ranked 1001–1500✅ SDG 4: Quality Education – Ranked 1501+
    ✅ SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions – Ranked 1001+
    ✅ SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals – Ranked 1501+ With 113 public and private HEIs recognized in the country, WVSU is also one of only six higher education institutions in Western Visayas commended for this achievement. 

    This international recognition underscores WVSU’s commitment to its institutional vision of transforming generations through education that is both globally relevant and locally responsive. As it continues to grow its impact, WVSU affirms its role as a forward-moving state university driving progress within and beyond national borders.

    Perspective from the Ground: WVSU forum highlights responsible reporting and resilience

    West Visayas State University is currently holding a forum titled “Perspectives from the Ground: Building Resilience, Positive Responses through Responsible Reporting” at the WVSU Board Room today, April 30, 2025.

    Organized by the International and Local Linkages Office, in partnership with the third-year Bachelor of Arts in Journalism students of the College of Communication (COC) and the Center for Peace Education, the forum features speakers from diverse fields sharing real-world experiences and insights on ethical journalism, peacebuilding, and community resilience.

    Ms. Edel Carmela Subong-Csoka, Director of the International and Local Linkages Office and a professor of Peace Journalism, welcomed the participants by highlighting the crucial role of media in shaping public perception and advancing peace, especially in times of crisis. She stressed the need for future journalists to ground their reporting in empathy, accuracy, and social responsibility.

    “In a world increasingly marked by conflict, division, and misinformation, the role of peace journalism has never been more critical. This approach challenges us to go beyond headlines, to explore the deeper causes of conflict, and to give voice to those often left unheard. It reminds us that journalism is not just about reporting events—it is also about how we report them, and the impact our words have on peace, understanding, and unity”, she said.

    The forum features a diverse panel of speakers with expertise grounded in real-world experience. Among them are Ms. Alexia Galera, a Bachelor of Secondary Education student from WVSU-Janiuay Campus; Atty. Ariel I. Ballega, Information Technology Officer I at the Department of Education in Negros Occidental; PMAJ Shiela Mae A. Sangrines, spokesperson for the Iloilo City Police Office; and Mr. Moshe Jobel Aranas, a videographer, editor, and documentarist.

    An open floor discussion provides participants the opportunity to engage directly with the speakers, deepening the conversation on the role of journalism in addressing conflict, promoting understanding, and responding to crises with accuracy and empathy. Mr. Ramon Belleno III, faculty member of WVSU’s College of Arts and Sciences, and Mr. Gierson Bordon, BAJ Student, serves as the reactor for the event, offering reflections and insights on the themes discussed.

    The forum underscores WVSU’s continued commitment to peace education and journalistic integrity, empowering future communicators to become responsible storytellers and agents of positive change.

    WVSU, PIA partner to boost responsible journalism and public information in Western Visayas

    West Visayas State University and the Philippine Information Agency have formalized a partnership to promote responsible journalism and strengthen public information efforts across Region VI. 

    WVSU President Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz and PIA Regional Head Cheryl B. Amor signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on April 25 at the WVSU Boardroom, marking the start of collaborative efforts between the academic and government sectors. 

    The agreement outlines joint initiatives in educational programming and community-based projects aimed at empowering the youth, supporting government efforts, and advancing sustainable development in the region. 

    The partnership will also focus on engaging students, faculty, and staff through workshops, seminars, and technical support aligned with national communication priorities. 

    Present during the signing was Ms. Edel Carmela Subong-Csoka, head of the WVSU International and Local Linkages Office, who emphasized the importance of multi-sectoral participation in building a well-informed and responsible citizenry. Text and

    Taga-West artists depict WVSU historic Quezon Hall on canvas

    Artists from various colleges and external campuses of West Visayas State University (WVSU) showcased their talent by capturing the iconic Quezon Hall in a painting competition held on January 29 as part of the ongoing 2025 DIGAMO sa West University Days celebration.

    Sixteen participants took part in the Visual Arts – Painting (Traditional) category, where they had five and a half hours, from 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., to complete their artworks highlighting the historical significance of the campus landmark.

    The event kicked off at the Roxas Hall facade, with facilitators University Student Council (USC) Chairperson Gilbert Esporton Cerillo and Councilor Jovit Kyle Poligrates briefing participants on the competition guidelines and theme. The artists then dispersed across the area, seeking the best angles for inspiration.

    “This is my second time joining WVSU U-Days,” said Lyl Van Clyb Noca, a third-year Bachelor of Science in Criminology student from the Lambunao Campus. “I personally like this year’s theme more, mostly because it has a clear reference [which] I can base my art on. I think the Quezon Hall is a great subject.”

    Dr. Arturo Souribio, one of the judges, emphasized the importance of the activity. “This is the first building ever constructed at the university. Coming up with activities that give importance to this structure while providing avenues for self-expression through painting is meaningful,” he said.

    Souribio added that the event is also a way to assess participants’ skills and identify potential representatives for higher-level competitions.

    The paintings will be evaluated by Dr. Souribio, Sir Joy Fernando, Sir Vic Fario, and Sir Joshua Celestial. Winners will be announced on January 30, along with the results of other events during the university celebration.
