    Dagyoung Student Ambassadors foster global citizenship through SDGs workshop

    DagYoung Student Ambassadors (DSA) from various colleges of the West Visayas State University (WVSU) main campus took part in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) workshop during SYNC: Shaping Youth, Nurturing Connections held on October 10 at the Center for Teaching Excellence Hall.

    Dr. Louis Placido F. Lachica, WVSU Focal Person for the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UN SDSN) initiatives, served as the resource speaker for the session.

    He discussed the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their significance in addressing issues such as poverty, education, equality, and climate change. Dr. Lachica also emphasized how student ambassadors can contribute by integrating SDG-oriented values and communication into their campus and community initiatives.

    One of the highlights of the session was the “Rank the Goals” workshop, where participants formed small groups and ranked the 17 SDGs according to what they believed were the most urgent for today’s generation. Each group presented their top three priorities, which led to meaningful exchanges of ideas on pressing youth and global concerns.

    The ambassadors also shared personal insights on which goals resonated with them most and why they believe these goals must be addressed in today’s world.

    Through the workshop, the DSAs strengthened their understanding of global issues and reaffirmed their commitment to becoming advocates of sustainable change—living out the essence of youth leadership with purpose and responsibility.

    WVSU takes part in nationwide earthquake drill to boost disaster readiness

    West Visayas State University (WVSU) joined the 3rd quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) on Sep. 11, 2025 at 4 p.m., in response to the Office of Civil Defense’s call to strengthen preparedness and resilience. 

    The activity was spearheaded by the University Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (UDRRM), led by Mr. Ian Van Sumagaysay, UDRRM director, in coordination with the university constituents. Faculty, students, and staff practiced the “duck, cover, and hold” procedure for one minute after the alarm, following prescribed earthquake response steps. 

    The quarterly drill is part of a nationwide initiative to promote a culture of safety and readiness in the face of earthquakes and other disasters.

    WVSU joins 2025 PCSA Fun Run, earns recognition for strong delegation

    West Visayas State University (WVSU) participated in the 2025 Philippine Civil Service Anniversary (PCSA) Fun Run organized by the Civil Service Commission Regional Office VI at the Iloilo Freedom Grandstand earlier today, in celebration of the 125th PCSA with the theme “Bawat Kawani, Lingkod Bayani: Puso, Dangal, at Galing para sa Bayan.” 

    WVSU registered 85 employees to the fun run, one of the largest contingents from participating agencies. The University was also recognized with a Certificate of Appreciation for this strong turnout, received by Ms. Christine Jaspe of the Administrative Division.

    The fun run held simultaneously nationwide and in Region 6 through the University of Antique in Sibalom, drew almost 2,000 runners in Iloilo City and underscored the civil service’s commitment to wellness, solidarity, and public service.

    Proceeds will benefit the Pamanang Lingkod Bayani Program, which honors fallen public servants by providing financial assistance and educational support to their families. 

    By actively joining the event, WVSU reinforced its dedication to promoting unity, wellness, and excellence in public service—values at the heart of the civil service tradition.

    WVSU joins government job fair celebrating civil service anniversary

    West Visayas State University (WVSU) joined the 2025 Government Job Fair at SM City Iloilo on Sept. 4–5, in celebration of the 125th anniversary of the Civil Service Commission (CSC). 

    The event, part of a monthlong celebration themed “Bawat Kawani, Lingkod Bayani: Puso, Dangal, at Galing Para sa Bayan,” aimed to promote public service opportunities and highlight the role of government workers in nation-building. 

    WVSU was represented in the job fair by the Human Resource Management Office (HRMO), with staff members Abigail Quirante and Rey Matthew Parreno at the forefront. They were guided by Ms. Doullie M. Lotilla, HRMO head, and joined by Ms. Ludylie Buendia, WVSU career job placement coordinator. 

    CSC Region VI Acting Director Atty. Erna T. Elizan opened the event, emphasizing the importance of bringing government job opportunities directly to the public to support national development. 

    WVSU’s participation aligned with CSC’s initiative to connect qualified applicants with government positions. The fair, held at SM City Iloilo’s activity center, offered job seekers a chance to explore a wide range of employment opportunities.

    College of Medicine showcases legacy in golden anniversary exhibit

    The West Visayas State University College of Medicine (WVSU-COM) launched “The Golden Voyage: 50 Years of WVSU-COM Excellence” exhibit on July 9 at the lower ground floor of SM City Iloilo, as part of Balik Roxas Hall celebration. 

    The exhibit showcases photos, awards, and stories of WVSU-COM alumni. These timeless pieces invite visitors to the beginning, the triumph, and the continued community service of the University and the College of Medicine. 

    The exhibit runs until July 11 and forms part of a series of events marking Balik Roxas Hall, celebrating the legacy, medical and academic excellence, and transformative endeavors of the College of Medicine.

    Art and Medicine Merge at 50th Balik Roxas Hall

    The three-day Alumni Homecoming of the West Visayas State University College of Medicine officially opened today, July 9, kicking off a series of events that will run until July 11. The celebration features an art exhibit, wellness dance, foot parade, social gatherings, and will culminate in a Grand Alumni Night at the Iloilo Convention Center. 

    Headlining Day One is an art exhibit at Quezon Hall, which showcases the creative expressions of WVSU College of Medicine alumni through painting and photography. Now on its second year, the exhibit follows the successful turnout of last year’s show. 

    Dr. Jofel Isidro, President of the College of Medicine Alumni Association, encouraged fellow alumni to take part in this golden milestone. “It is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to celebrate the 50th year of the College,” he said. 

    WVSU President Dr. Joselito Villaruz led the formal opening of the exhibit and commended the featured works as a “remarkable collection of stories, creativity, and shared journeys.” 

    This year’s Balik Roxas Hall carries the theme, “Golden Touch, Global Impact — 50 Years of WVSU-COM Excellence,” in tribute to five decades of medical achievement and alumni pride. The exhibit at Quezon Hall is open to the public from July 9 to 11.

    Academic partnership brings four Penn State Medical Students to WVSU for global immersion program

    Four medical students from Pennsylvania State University officially began their Global Health Scholars Pathway (GHSP) immersion today, June 30, at West Visayas State University (WVSU), marking the start of a collaborative international program aimed at strengthening global medical education and cross-cultural healthcare learning.

    The visiting students—Madison Scopano, Jacob Berry, Eva Eleftheriadis, and Jaybee Diones—are accompanied by their faculty site lead, Dr. Jasmin Gange Lagman, Associate Professor at Penn State and an alumna of the WVSU College of Medicine.

    The three-week immersion program, which runs from June 30 to July 19, 2025, commenced with a courtesy visit to Dr. Victor Amantillo, Dean of the WVSU College of Medicine, followed by a tour of the college. The group also paid a visit to WVSU President Dr. Joselito Villaruz, who welcomed them and expressed the university’s enthusiasm for this new chapter in global academic cooperation.

    This visit is part of a larger partnership between Penn State and WVSU, established through a Memorandum of Understanding signed earlier this year on January 1, 2025.

    The program is designed to expose future medical professionals to diverse health systems, community-based practices, and health economics in a global setting.

    Additionally, the program is coordinated by Dr. Eunice Sermonia and Dr. Charmaine Malata, who are overseeing the students’ university-related activities and ensuring a smooth and enriching academic and cultural experience.

    The Global Health Scholars Pathway is a unique and innovative program that integrates global health education into the medical curriculum at Penn State. It provides students with two immersive international experiences: the first focused on community immersion and development of a health project, and the second, in the students’ senior year, dedicated to clinical engagement in the same setting.

    By choosing the Philippines—specifically WVSU—as one of the program’s international sites, this initiative not only fosters academic and cultural exchange but also reflects the growing global partnerships that shape the future of medical education.

    This visit is just the beginning of a promising long-term collaboration between WVSU and Penn State, with future cohorts of medical scholars expected to follow.

    WVSU forges digital health alliance with New Zealand’s University of Otago

    West Visayas State University (WVSU) has entered into a new international partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the University of Otago on June 27, 2025, in Dunedin, New Zealand.

    The agreement was signed by WVSU President Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz and University of Otago Vice Chancellor Hon. Grant Robertson during the Philippine High-Level Mission to New Zealand organized by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

    The partnership focuses on collaborative research in digital health and medicine, faculty and student exchange programs, and the co-development of digital innovations aimed at enhancing healthcare systems and services. Both institutions expressed their commitment to working together in advancing global health outcomes through academic and technological collaboration.

    Dr. Villaruz emphasized that the partnership marks a significant step in WVSU’s pursuit of excellence and innovation in health sciences. He highlighted that the agreement not only supports the university’s research goals but also opens international pathways for students and faculty.

    With this new partnership, WVSU continues to position itself as a leader in global health education and digital transformation.

    WVSU-Janiuay Campus Secures CHED Permit to Offer BS Radiologic Technology Program

    West Visayas State University – Janiuay Campus proudly announces that its Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Technology program has been granted permission to operate its first and second-year levels for Academic Year 2025–2026, through Government Permit R6 No. 7, series of 2025, issued by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). 

    The introduction of this program was first unveiled by University President Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz during his State of the University Address earlier this year, as part of WVSU’s commitment to strengthening the healthcare sector and providing students with more pathways into medical careers. 

    While the permit is valid for AY 2025–2026 only, this milestone reflects the university’s ongoing efforts to expand its academic offerings in the medical and allied health fields—anchored in its core values of creativity, innovation, and service. Congratulations to the WVSU-Janiuay Campus community, especially its dedicated faculty and staff, for this significant achievement.

    WVSU earns first-ever spot in Times Higher Education Impact Rankings

    For the first time in its history, West Visayas State University (WVSU) has earned a place in the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, marking a major milestone in its global journey toward academic excellence and sustainable development. 

    The university’s inclusion in the 2025 rankings was formally recognized during “Ranked & Recognized: A Celebration of PHEIs,” a national event organized by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and held at the CHED Central Office Auditorium in Quezon City on June 24, 2025. Representing the university at the ceremony was Dr. Ma. Asuncion Christine V. Dequilla, Vice President for Academic Affairs. 

    The Impact Rankings assess universities worldwide based on their contributions to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). WVSU ranked 1501+ overall, joining a select group of institutions recognized for advancing inclusive, sustainable, and transformative education. 

    WVSU made notable marks in several key SDGs:
    ✅ SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being – Ranked 1001–1500✅ SDG 4: Quality Education – Ranked 1501+
    ✅ SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions – Ranked 1001+
    ✅ SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals – Ranked 1501+ With 113 public and private HEIs recognized in the country, WVSU is also one of only six higher education institutions in Western Visayas commended for this achievement.
