    Flag ceremony marking second sem welcomes foreign exchange students to WVSU

    West Visayas State University (WVSU) officially welcomed foreign exchange students from Spain and South Korea during the flag ceremony on Monday, marking the opening of the second semester.

    The Spanish interns, Mertxe Mendibe Lazaro and Maria Pilar Arraiz Torre, will undergo a six-month internship at WVSU from January 22 to July 21, 2025. They are recipients of the Basque Government’s Global Training Grant Programme, a collaboration between WVSU, Mondragon University, and the University of Deusto in Spain.

    Dr. Antoniette Cortez, director of WVSU’s Center for Teaching Excellence, will oversee their internship. The interns will participate in cultural immersion activities across Western Visayas, study Philippine history with BCAED students, serve as teaching assistants in the Integrated Laboratory School Kindergarten, the College of PESCAR, and the College of Arts and Sciences, and collaborate with College of Education students on a multilingual compendium project.

    At the same time, WVSU also welcomed 20 students from Jeju National University (JNU), South Korea, for a month-long academic and cultural immersion program.

    The delegation, led by Prof. Yung-Cheol Byun, director of the Center for High Intelligence Service at JNU, will collaborate with Dr. Ma. Beth Concepcion, dean of the College of ICT, to facilitate various academic activities. The students will study English through the WVSU Center for Foreign Languages and engage in academic programs under the College of Information and Communications Technology (CICT) from January 17 to February 17, 2025.

    This initiative is part of WVSU’s internationalization efforts, aimed at fostering cross-cultural learning and global partnerships, under the guidance of the International and Local Linkages Office (ILLO).

    Three WVSU students step into teaching roles at Taiwan’s Leading English Immersion Camp

    Three students from West Visayas State University (WVSU) are set to join the American Language Village (ALV) Immersion Program in Taiwan from January 18 to 27, 2025, marking an exciting new chapter in the university’s international outreach. This immersive camp will be the first major initiative under the newly established Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between WVSU and the ALV.

    The selected students will act as teacher assistants, playing a pivotal role in facilitating group activities, supporting language instruction, and assisting with cultural programs integral to the camp’s curriculum. Maria Fe Tianes is a student from the WVSU Himamaylan Campus, enrolled in the School of Education, while Zoe Marie Baaya and Le Gerlaine Mondejar are both 4th-year Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED) English students from the Main Campus, College of Education (COE).

    Accompanying them will be Prof. Edel Carmela S. Subong-Csoka, Director of the International and Local Linkages Office, and Prof. Esperval Cezhar H. Cadiao, College Secretary of the College of Education. Together, this group of students and faculty members will represent WVSU at the renowned camp in Taiwan, which was established in 1992 as the country’s first and only English immersion camp.

    For the WVSU delegation, this opportunity goes beyond the teaching skills they will acquire; it is an invaluable experience that will deepen their understanding of global perspectives and prepare them to become more effective educators. As future teachers, the skills and insights they gain at the ALV will be instrumental in helping them teach their students not only English but also important values of global citizenship, cultural awareness, and environmental stewardship.

    This immersion program aligns perfectly with WVSU’s commitment to fostering global learning opportunities for its students. By exposing them to international teaching environments and cross-cultural experiences, WVSU is preparing its future educators to take on leadership roles and contribute meaningfully to the ever-changing educational landscape.

    WVSU PAMCO participates in Career Fair at Colegio del Sagrado Corazon de Jesus

    The West Visayas State University (WVSU) Public Affairs and Marketing Communications Office (PAMCO) took part in the Developmental Career Guidance Week Celebration 2025 of the Colegio del Sagrado Corazon de Jesus (CSCJ) from January 15-16, 2025.

    With the theme, “Vincentian Pilgrims: Navigating and Growing Careers in Hope and Prayer”, the event kicked off with a series of talks from invited guests during the Career and Vocation Campaign to Senior High School Students at the CSCJ Our Lady’s Hall during the first day.

    Jessa Temelo, information officer of PAMCO, delivered a talk that highlighted WVSU’s wide selection of academic programs, while emphasizing nursing, education, and management programs as requested by the CSCJ Guidance Center.

    In addition, the WVSU Expedited Select Track for Medicine (WEST Med) program overview and admission were also discussed, which left STEM students buzzed and encouraged to take the opportunity of a 7-year medicine program.

    On the second day, WVSU participated in the Career Exhibit, which provided an interactive experience among students and representatives of various colleges and universities present.

    Attendees who dropped by the booth were given media kits containing brochures and information about the university. Also included in the kits were tabloids and newsletters, which were generously provided by WVSU student publications such as Vital Signs Publication, SILAK Media, and The Innovator.

    The two-day event was joined by students and representatives from John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University – Molo Campus, Western Institute of Technology, University of Iloilo, University of San Agustin, Iloilo Doctors’ College, Central Philippine University, St. Therese MTC Colleges – Magdalo Site, and the host school’s college department.

    Organized by the CSCJ Guidance Center, the Career Fair aims to assist students as they navigate and nurture in their desired careers while embodying Vincentian values of integrating faith and action through lifting communities from living in poverty.

    WVSU welcomes 20 students from Jeju National University, South Korea for cross-cultural immersion

    West Visayas State University (WVSU) has officially welcomed a delegation of 20 students from Jeju National University (JNU), South Korea, for a month-long academic and cultural immersion program. The students will immerse themselves in various academic activities under the College of Information and Communications Technology (CICT) and engage in English language studies through the WVSU Center for Foreign Languages, from January 17 to February 17, 2025.

    The delegation, led by Prof. Yung-Cheol Byun, Director of the Center for High Intelligence Service at Jeju National University, was warmly received by Dr. Ma. Beth Concepcion, Dean of the College of ICT. This program marks another milestone in WVSU’s ongoing internationalization efforts, aimed at fostering cross-cultural learning and global partnerships.

    During their stay, the South Korean students will be immersed in academic courses offered by CICT, focusing on information technology and communications. In addition to the academic curriculum, they will also participate in English language training at the WVSU Center for Foreign Languages, under the guidance of professors from the Department of English and Foreign Languages.

    Beyond the classroom, the students will engage in a variety of cultural activities designed to expose them to Filipino traditions, customs, and lifestyles. These activities, facilitated by the International and Local Linkages Office (ILLO) and WVSU-Business Incubator Nurturing Homegrown Innovations (BINHI), will allow both South Korean and WVSU students to connect, share, and learn from one another.

    This program underscores WVSU’s dedication to fostering international collaborations and providing its students with opportunities for global exposure, academic exchange, and cultural dialogue. It also strengthens ties between WVSU and Jeju National University, furthering the institutions’ shared mission of creating a more interconnected world through education.

    WVSU CON graduate receives prestigious NHS England Award

    Darvey Clint Gario, a registered nurse in the United Kingdom, has been honored with the National Health Service (NHS) England Chief Nursing Officer – Silver Award for Outstanding Service to Nursing on January 7, 2025.

    Gario was a graduate of West Visayas State University (WVSU) College of Nursing (CON) in 2014, and is currently working as a Cardiac Charge Nurse at The Harley Street Clinic, a world-leading private hospital in UK that specializes in cancer care, cardiology, and complex surgery.

    The award, bestowed by the Chief Nursing Officer for NHS England in the London Region, recognized Gario’s exceptional contributions to the nursing profession. Gario expressed gratitude to the HCA Healthcare UK superiors for the nomination, and acknowledged the support and mentorship of colleagues at The Harley Street Clinic.

    This significant achievement serves as a testament of continued excellence for WVSU graduates around the globe and in the field of nursing.

    WVSU strengthens global network with new Korean collaborative talks

    In a significant step towards strengthening academic ties between the Philippines and Korea, Kim Inyong, a representative from Korean Association in the Visayas, visited West Visayas State University (WVSU) on January 7, 2025. The visit focused on exploring potential avenues for collaboration, particularly in education and cultural exchange.

    Ms. Edel Carmela Subong-Csoka, Director of WVSU International and Local Linkages Office, warmly welcomed Mr. Kim, expressing optimism about the visit’s potential to foster stronger international partnerships.

    “It’s an additional opportunity for us in the University especially that we have earned the King Sejong Institute grant recently. We are looking at expanding the cross-cultural experience not only in information technology and English language study, but also in the medical Sciences”, she said.

    Kim Inyoung echoed the enthusiasm, noting that the potential for academic exchange and mutual collaboration holds great promise. He highlighted that Korean institutions are eager to expand their global partnerships, and WVSU presents a valuable opportunity for academic cooperation.

    The discussions revolved around several key initiatives, including faculty and student exchange programs, fostering partnerships with Korean universities, and developing joint curricula aimed at enhancing the academic offerings of both institutions.

    This exploratory meeting sets the stage for continued discussions in the coming months, as both institutions work to formalize the specifics of their partnership.     WVSU Celebrates BLEPT Topnotchers and Passers in First Flag Ceremony of 2025

    West Visayas State University (WVSU) honors the passers and six topnotchers of the September 2024 Board Licensure Examination for Professional Teachers (BLEPT) from the College of Education (COE) and the College of PESCAR (COP) during the first flag raising ceremony of the year.

    Dr. Ricky Magno, COE Dean, highlighted the overall passing rates of 96.4% for the elementary level and 96.77% for the secondary level, and recognized the topnotchers as the achievements of the recent BLEPT passers.

    • Emily Valderama, Bachelor of Elementary Education, placed 6th with a rate of 93%
    • Angel Nits Lopez, Bachelor of Special Needs Education (Teaching Deaf and Hard of Hearing Learners), placed 9th with a rate of 92.40%
    • Carmela Caranzo, Bachelor of Special Needs Education (Generalist), placed 10th with a rate of 92.20%
    • Mia Nicole Pedrosa, Bachelor of Special Needs Education (Generalist), placed 10th with a rate of 92.20%
    • Mark Aron Martirez, Bachelor of Science in Nursing and November 2022 Philippine Nurses Licensure Examination (PNLE) Top 6, placed 8th in the secondary level with a rate of 93%
    • Diana Grace Tubal, Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in Science and WVSU COE Summa Cum Laude, placed 8th with a rate of 93%


    In addition, Dr. Magno emphasized the passing rates of COE first-time takers with 100% for the elementary level and 99.30% for the secondary level.

    Dr. Magno also recognized COP for a remarkable overall passing rate of 100% with 23 takers, which contributed to the success of WVSU La Paz (Main Campus) as the rank 1 top performing school for the elementary level, and rank 2 top performing school for the secondary level.

    After the flag ceremony, Dr. Ma. Asuncion Christine Dequilla, Vice President for Academic Affairs, reflected on a promising new year and emphasized the vigor that everyone has for new sets of tasks to be done.

    “Basta taga-West, we always do our best in everything that we do [and] we know that we will continue to soar higher, faster, greater, and stronger,” said Dequilla.

    Dr. Peter Ernie Paris, Vice President for Administration and Finance, also expressed his gratitude to the entire WVSU community for all the initiatives from the previous year.

    “[To] more collaborations and genuine intention to sustain excellence and continued improvement, [and] may this year be peaceful and prosperous to all of you,” said Paris.

    This week’s flag raising ceremony was led by the students, faculty, and staff of the College of Communication (COC).

    WVSU receives recognition at 25th Ugsad Regional Gender Resource Awards Night

    West Visayas State University (WVSU) was recognized for its exemplary support as a partner organization of the Ugsad Regional Gender Resource Network during the 25th Ugsad Regional Gender Resource Awards Night held on December 11, 2024, at the Little Theater, University of the Philippines Visayas, Iloilo City.

    The award highlights WVSU’s commitment to delivering gender-responsive programs and services in Western Visayas. The university, a founding member of Ugsad, continues to play a pivotal role in the only surviving gender resource network in the region, which marked its 25th anniversary with the theme, “UGSAD’s Journey: Celebrating 25 Years of Empowering Voices and Forging Inclusive Communities.”

    Representing WVSU at the event were Dr. Nancy Surmieda, former GAD director; Dr. Jeanette J. Simpas, the current director of the Gender and Development Office; and Dr. Lea M. Gabawa, the GAD Focal Person for the College of Communication and Information Technology.

    Adding to the celebration, Prof. Rus Will Ledesma and student Jhon Donryl Mendoza from the College of PESCAR performed an intermission number of “Rosas Pandan” by Pilita Corrales.

    WVSU’s recognition reaffirms its dedication to advancing gender equality and fostering inclusive communities in the region.

    The delegation from Nobel University, composed of John Kim, Evangeline Quimpo, Rosemarie Diehoto, and Ilsik Byuno, was warmly welcomed by Dr. Greta G. Gabinete, Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension of WVSU.     During the meeting, Dr. Maria Corazon M. Samorin, Dean of the WVSU College of Business and Management, along with CBM faculty members, engaged in fruitful discussions with the Nobel University team. The talks revolved around potential areas of collaboration, including faculty and student exchange programs, joint research projects, curriculum development, and entrepreneurial initiatives aimed at addressing real-world challenges.

    Nobel University, known for its forward-thinking approach, is dedicated to advancing responsible business practices. Its mission focuses on providing pragmatic, entrepreneurial education that is Christian in orientation and global in scope. This vision aligns seamlessly with WVSU’s commitment to producing competent and socially responsible business leaders.

    WVSU bags ICONS Award for third consecutive year; recognized for IZN efforts

    West Visayas State University (WVSU) was honored once again at the prestigious Commission on Higher Education’s Internationalization Champions of Nation-Building and Sustainability (ICONS) Awards on December 16, 2024, held at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City. This marks the university’s third consecutive year receiving this recognition for its outstanding achievements in internationalization with focus on global higher education.

    Ms. Edel Carmela Subong-Csoka, Director of WVSU’s International and Local Linkages Office, was present to accept the award on behalf of the university. She expressed her enthusiasm and pride in the university’s continuous growth and success on the global stage. “This is WVSU’s efforts recognized. We are truly grateful to CHED, CHED IAS and the top management for believing that internationalization at West can go a long way. We are not only creating a name here. With us, we create leaders and empower everyone in the WVSU system,” she said.

    WVSU’s remarkable achievements were also recognized in 2023 when the university broke into the stringent World University Rankings for Innovation (WURI), earning a spot in the Global Top Innovative Universities (Top 201-300). This was a significant milestone, following WVSU’s success in 2022 when it earned three stars in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) rankings for its exceptional academic and research performance.

    The ICONS Award is a prestigious accolade that acknowledges higher education institutions for their excellence in international rankings, including QS, THE, and WURI, and for their successful efforts in advancing nation-building and sustainable development. WVSU’s consistent recognition underscores its commitment to fostering global engagement, innovative research, and academic excellence.

    WVSU’s rise in international rankings reflects its sustained efforts to enhance academic reputation, research output, and its commitment to sustainability and development.
