The Gender and Development (GAD) Office Drop-In Center at West Visayas State University (WVSU) celebrated its Precious Tribute Summer 2024 Culminating Program, held at the Center for Teaching Excellence on August 5, 2024. With the theme, “Splashes and smiles make the best summer files,” the program highlighted the achievements and growth of the young pupils who attended the Drop-In Center.
The event featured a keynote address by Raisa Treñas-Chu, Leader of the Uswag Ilonggo Party List, sharing her personal experiences as a mother. “The most important thing nga ihatag sa aton kabataan is to love them and to believe in them because if we do, they will be capable of achieving great things and their fullest potential,” Treñas-Chu said.
The program included the presentation of medals and ribbons to the pupils, recognizing their accomplishments throughout the summer. Parents were also honored with certificates for their support of their children’s educational journey. The Drop-In Center was established in 2002 as per the Board of Regent Resolution, establishing the child-minding facility under the GAD’s supervision. It provides care for children aged two to four years old, ensuring a nurturing environment for their early development.

West Visayas State University (WVSU) ranks first among universities in the Western Visayas region, fourth in the Visayas, and 18th among Philippine universities in the July 2024 Webometrics Ranking of World Universities released recently. According to its website, the Webometrics Ranking is an initiative of the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group that belongs to the largest public research body in Spain, the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC). The objective is to rank universities based on impact or online visibility, transparency or open access initiatives, and excellence or quality of electronic publications. WVSU has retained its number one ranking in Region VI from the Webometrics of July 2022, though it went a notch lower this year in the Philippine university rankings. Among the criteria, WVSU performed worldwide with a rank of 13,005 for impact, 5,466 for openness, and 5,267 for excellence. WVSU trails behind University of San Carlos, Visayas State University, and Cebu Technological University in the whole of Visayas, while it leads in the Western Visayas region and is closely followed by the University of the Philippines Visayas. Dr. Joselito Villaruz conferred the Doctor of Medicine degrees upon 109 students during the West Visayas State University (WVSU) College of Medicine’s Commencement Exercises, held today, July 25, 2024 at the WVSU Cultural Center.
West Visayas State University (WVSU) International and Local Linkages Office strengthened its international efforts through a seminar-workshop on innovation in internationalization (IZN) strategies in Pototan campus on July 24, 2024.
Prof. Edel Carmela Subong-Csoka, Director of International and Local Linkages Office, talked on ILLO mandates, strategic planning, accomplishments and upcoming foreign scholarship opportunities. Also, she underlined the important role of internationalization in Higher Education Institutions.
The ILLO staff led discussions on topics relevant to IZN operations–Ms. Alisa Mei Locsin talked on necessary paperwork and requirements needed for international travel; Mr. Nelson Tajanlangit tackled matters on budget and itinerary preparation and Mr. Gladwyn Gustilo introduced basic news writing on internationalization.
This activity aimed to orient students, IZN coordinator, faculty and unit heads on internationalization and taking and making opportunities in local and foreign institutions.
The event was attended by Dr. Raymund Gemora, Campus Administrator of WVSU Pototan; Prof. Claudine May Leysa, Public Affairs and Linkages Coordinator; Dr. Lauro E. Estecomen, IZN Coordinator of WVSU Pototan campus; Unit Heads; Deans and DagYoung Student Ambassadors from the different colleges and campuses.
To strengthen the ties within the WVSU system for a greater university student representation, the International and Local Linkages Office (ILLO) hosted the DagYoung Ambassadors’ Meeting and Election on July 23, 2024 at the Center for Teaching Excellence.
The Director of International and Local Linkages office, Ms. Edel Carmela Subong-Csoka, welcomed the student ambassadors coming from the different colleges and campuses of the WVSU system. She highlighted the importance of DagYoung Ambassadors in local and international partnerships, reiterating their roles in working with the strategic internationalization plans, programs and activities of the colleges and campuses for the purpose of Internationalization (IZN).
The event serves as an avenue for DagYoung Ambassadors to understand the value of university representation as they are now going to be in full force operations starting the first semester of this year.
Approved by the Board of Regents in 2022, the DagYoung Ambassadors refers to the official student ambassadors of the University. This assembly of students embodies the values and excellence the University has imparted and they aim to thrust WVSU into the international stage as it transitions into a research-centered institution.
The Student Ambassadors will be at the forefront of this significant milestone that is geared towards achieving the University’s mission, vision, and core values. They are composed of different student volunteers from the colleges and campuses of the WVSU system who are mandated to: assist in welcoming domestic and international partners of the University; coordinate with the Directors of ILLO and Public Affairs and Communications Office with regards to diplomatic and consular relations activities; work with the college/campus internationalization coordinators in the internationalization plans, programs, and activities of the college/campus; conduct International Program that promotes global competitiveness to students; create an internationalization plan for the students of the University; promote international friendship; and, advocate for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in the University and its local and international partners.
On behalf of West Visayas State university (WVSU), Dr. Joselito Villaruz has signed a Technical Licensing Agreement with the Pototan Multi-Purpose Cooperative to commercialize a novel souring agent made from batuan and taro powder, a technology developed by WVSU. Held on July 22, 2024 at the WVSU Board Room, Dr. Raymund Gemora, Campus Administrator, represented WVSU Pototan Campus, while Pototan Multi-Purpose Cooperative was represented by Dr. Eugene Tañedo, Chairman, and Dr. Charlie Dormindo, Manager.
This partnership aims to bring this innovative solution to the market and drive further research and development. The agreement is expected to benefit the public and support local economic growth, aligning with WVSU’s vision to become a research university.
Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz attended the Co-Creation and Ideation Workshop “PROJECT CO-LAB FOR HEALTH: A Co-Creation Mechanism for Optimized Health Service Delivery and Enhanced Patient Experience in the Outpatient Department of WVSU Medical Center” on July 18, 2024.
The workshop aimed to co-create innovative solutions that would optimize health service delivery and enhance patient experience in the Outpatient Department of WVSU Medical Center.
