    Bukidnon State University initiates benchmarking activity with WVSU

    To learn the best practices of WVSU in the area of culture and the arts and physical education, BukSU visited the WVSU College of Pescar took part in the exchange of knowledge about the academic affairs and curriculum under the said college.

    The Department Head of Bachelor in Physical Education at BukSU, Dr. Regina B. Dumdumaya, together with some faculty members and administrators joined the said activity.

    The meeting-discussion was led by Pescar Secretary Prof. Ryan Puljanan, WVSU Director for Culture and Dance, Prof. Liberty Porras, and Pescar faculty Prof. Jemuel Garcia.

    To further widen WVSU’s global academic affairs and engagement, the French Embassy represented by Adam Folleas, Officer for Higher Education and Linguistics, Head of Campus France Manila – SCAC with Sylvain Lamourette, Cooperation Attaché held an info session discussing what they can offer the University.

     

    The session included student language assistantship, language teaching courses, and academic exchange.

  • WVSU wins best extension project awards in PASUC VI-EMC reg’l symposium

    The Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges VI – Extension Managers’ Council (PASUC 6-EMC)  successfully culminated  its 3-day 12th PASUC-VI EMC Regional Symposium and General Assembly last November 17, 2023 with an awarding of winners for paper, poster and video documentary entries. Held at  Diversion 21 Hotel, the theme for this year’s symposium is “SUCs Leading the Way: Bridging Communities for Sustainable Futures” where it focuses on 3 categories namely: Education and Skill Empowerment; Healthcare and Environmental Stewardship and Innovation in Sustainable Agri-Fishery  and Livelihood.

    During the plenary session prior to the cluster presentations, resource speaker Dr. Ruperto S. Dangalang, President Emeritus of Cavite State University and Former Commissioner of CHED shared thought provoking scenarios on the topic “Scanning Horizons: Scoping the Futures of Extension for SUCs. Meanwhile, Ma. Leah L. Letrero, OIC Chief and Economic Development Specialist of NEDA Region 6 presented and discussed the Western Visayas Regional Plan 2023-2028.

    West Visayas State University, one of the SUCs with most number of participants garnered 1st place in both  the education and healthcare categories. The entry of WVSU-Calinog Campus entitled “Transforming Lives of Adult Learners through Functional Literacy Extension Project: An Impact Study” won the Best Extension Project award for Education and Skill Empowerment Category. The paper was presented during the symposium by Dr. Elias C. Olapane and is co-authored with Mary Jean F. Cataluna, Rosario Clarabel C. Contreras, Andy Jose A. Casabuena, Recel T. Cabral, and Pamela F. Guevara.

    Meanwhile, the WVSU- College of Nursing also won the Best Extension Project award for healthcare and environmental stewardship category for  “Rays of Hope: Home Health Project”  presented by author Sheila P. Beliran.

  • Indonesian exchange students pay courtesy call to Iloilo City Mayor; explore the city

    To enhance global ties and foster cultural exchange, three Indonesian students from Institut Teknologi Sepuluh (ITS) Nopember, Surabaya, paid a courtesy visit to Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas as part of their second-day of itinerary on Nov. 10, 2023.

    Mayor Treñas warmly welcomed the three Indonesian scholars, namely: Akbhar Maulana, Valeska Rianto, and Ghifary Muhammad, marking a significant stride in the internationalization efforts of West Visayas State University (WVSU).

    To delve into the rich history and vibrant culture of the City of Love, the exchange students embarked on a guided tour in places such as Camina Balay nga Bato, Molo Mansion, and Festive Walk. They also had a taste of chicken sari-sari.

    The International and Local Linkages Office (ILLO), at the forefront of institutional internationalization, organized the student exchange program titled “Creating Opportunities: The WVSU Student Exchange Program” in collaboration with the College of Information and Communications Technology (CICT) and the College of Business and Management (CBM).

    Currently immersed in a two-week academic stint, the Indonesian students actively participate in classes facilitated by the aforementioned colleges including activities and immersive experiences to enrich their educational encounter prior to returning to their home country.

    West Visayas State University (WVSU) took a stride in fostering global understanding and cultural exchange as it celebrated International Students Day at the WVSU Cultural Center from 8:30 am to 5:00 p.m. on Nov. 17, 2023.

    On its third consecutive year, the International and Local Linkages Office (ILLO) organized the event at the WVSU Cultural Center, bringing together students, faculty, and guests for a day filled with activities aimed at promoting internationalization and fostering a global mindset among the University’s diverse student body.

    This year’s theme, “Empowering Students to Dream More, Learn More, Do More in a Global Mindset,” encapsulates the spirit of the celebration by emphasizing the significance of youth empowerment, expanding students’ knowledge, and promoting collective action.

     

    The event was a collaborative effort involving WVSU ILLO, the University Student Council, the University of Antique, Northern Negros State College of Science and Technology, and King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi in Thailand. Together, they organized a program aiming to engage 40 to 50 students per college and campus, creating an inclusive and enriching experience for participants.

    The day commenced with a series of talks, presentations, and cultural performances, highlighting the diverse backgrounds and talents of the international student community at WVSU.

    “I hope you have learned a lot and changed your perspective that internationalization and culture belong together,” remarked Prof. Edel Carmela Subong-Csoka, the director of WVSU-ILLO, during the conclusion of the program.

    For officially concluding the two-week academic stay of our Indonesian exchange students at the University, WVSU ILLO led the Closing Ceremony of “Creating Opportunities: The WVSU-ITS Student Exchange”, at the Research and Extension Building, November 22, 2023.

    Together with their faculty members, CBM Dean Dr. Maria Corazon M. Samorin and CICT Dean Dr. Ma. Beth S. Concepcion were present. The selected student buddies who provided company all throughout the duration of the students’ stay also graced the occasion.

    The University praised the enthusiasm showed by Ghifary Muhammad, Valeska Enrona Sareeka Rianto and Muhamad Akbar Maulana, as reflected on their academic endeavors,as well as the eagerness of fully immersing themselves with the Filipino culture, traditions and cuisines.

    “This may be the end of the 2023 student exchange program but definitely there’s more to this WVSU and ITS Surabaya partnership. I believe this partnership is written in the stars, it’s all meant to be. ” said WVSU ILLO Director, Edel Carmela S. Subong-Csoka, as she hints and manifests for more collaborations and partnerships with Institut Teknologi Sepuluh (ITS).

    This whole day event was made possible through collaboration with various universities: King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT), West Visayas State University, University of Antique, and Northern Negros State College of Science and Technology.


    “Let us make our universities open to change and innovations and let us work together to make our universities truly global institutions,” said Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz, WVSU President, officially commencing the event.

  • Top global scientist impressed by WVSU research work

    With a prolific portfolio boasting over 350 scientific articles, books, book chapters, and reports, a distinguished global health scientist, renowned for advancing science and research in the developing world, has expressed genuine admiration for the commendable research work conducted at West Visayas State University (WVSU).

    Dr. Don Eliseo Prisno made this pronouncement when he spoke at the recent WVSU Workshop on World University Rankings and Research Publication organized by the University Research and Development Center last Nov. 10-11, 2023.

    “All data points show that WVSU should be a top university of the country.  I have dissected and identified all the different data points; and they all lead to one conclusion–that all metrics lead to a high university rank,” said Dr. Prisno,  editor-in-chief of Public Health Challenges of Wiley, and deputy editor-in-chief of BMC Global Health Research and Policy, a Quartile 1 journal with an Impact Factor of 8.7.

    Dr. Prisno noted the following indicators that he said makes WVSU’s efforts impressive: Webometrics ranks it at number 17 in the country, it has one of the top scientists of the PH based on Scopus, has a substantial number of Scopus papers (and even much higher in number than the top universities of the country), has many AD Scientific Index and Google scholar-listed scientists with several citations, “and so many indicators that the University should be on the same level as the top universities of the Philippines”.

    Asked by the workshop participants on how WVSU should capitalize on its strengths, Dr. Prisno said, “The researchers of WVSU should focus on publishing with Scopus journals.  There should be a scale up of these publications.  The University and its researchers should promote its researches through conferences and other presentations.  There should be a substantial increase in research grants.  The students should be encouraged to publish.  And lastly, the university journals need to be strengthened.”

    Dr. Prisno, who has a PhD in Global Health from Cardiff University, has supported governments and universities worldwide in enhancing health research capacities during his extensive travels to 150 countries and territories for scientific work and as a frequent international speaker and consultant.

  • College of Law declared champion in Intellectual Property debate

    The West Visayas State University (WVSU) College of Law’s Vox Populi Debate Team emerged as the champion of the “IP Circle League: The Debate Finals Round” held on November 13, 2023, at the Intellectual Property Office in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City.

    Faith Montalban, Hammil Rainard Distor, and Lawrence Frankie Locsin, along with their coach Atty. Federic Loise S. Regencia, represented the university against the debate team from Rizal Memorial Colleges, Inc., School of Law in Davao City.

    The College of Law Dean, Pauline Grace B. Alfuente, and Associate Dean Ian Thomas M. Besana were also present at the venue to show their support for the team.

    Indonesian exchange students paid visit to Iloilo City Mayor Hon. Jerry P. Treñas

    Ghifary Muhammad, Akbar Maulana, and Valeska Rianto, students from Institut Teknologi Sepuluh (ITS) Nopember, Surabaya also met Iloilo City councilor Miguel Treñas and the Mayor’s daughter Ms Raisa Treñas-Chu.


    These students are joining the academic classes at the College of Information and Communications Technology and the College of Business and Management.


    Gab Umadhay, City PESO manager, facilitated the courtesy call and assisted the foreign students in their introduction with the Mayor.

    The students will then venture on a city tour guided by two of the WVSU-CBM Tourism Management students.
