    College of Communication march with pride and honor for West Visayas State University’s Graduation Ceremony today, July 21, 2022. The ceremonial rites are conducted face-to-face at the premises of WVSU Cultural Center. Despite the administering of the said set-up, minimum protocols are howbeit observed. This year, the college has given rise to 93 students who are eligible for graduation and 1 from graduate school.

    The three departmental courses under the College of Communication are mainly; Bachelor of Arts in Broadcasting, Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, and Bachelor of Science in Development Communication.

    A total of 33 Academic Awardees, including 17 Magna Cum Laude graduates and 16 Cum Laude graduates, were produced by the Broadcasting division. The Journalism division, on the other hand, brought forth 21 Academic Awardees in total, including 6 Magna Cum Laude graduates and 15 Cum Laude graduates. Meanwhile, the Development Communication division also welcomed 21 Academic Awardees, containing the first-ever Summa Cum Laude of the COC, 11 Magna Cum Laude graduates, and 9 Cum Laude graduates.

    John Aubrey Jamero from BAB, Greg Nicole Sala from BAJ, and Sam Sydryk Dealagdon from BSDC were hailed as the Most Outstanding Students of their degree program respectively.

    Everly Flores, a 4th year broadcasting student, expressed her mixed emotions for their graduation rites. “As our most awaited moment draws nearer, bittersweet feelings surface from within me as I recall all the challenges we’ve been through as a student from this institution. The bitter taste of goodbyes as we close another chapter in our lives, and the sweet taste of success after years of hard work”, said Flores.

    She also extended a message to her fellow graduates with an undecided path to take.”Getting a degree and graduating from my dream University has always been my goal. At this point in our lives, some may have a clearer vision for their future, and that’s good! But to those who are like me, know that you are not alone and we will all figure it out.”

    Those who braved to dive the uncertainties of the pedagogical abyss have redeemed their holy grail. A total of 94 graduates withstand the incessant mishaps and countless unprecedented fall.

    This history amidst the pandemic is one for the books — remembered through ages and ages of time. Your voices shall forever echo in the university, COC Batch 2022 Graduates!

  • WVSU holds in-person graduation; four summa cum laude grads from COE

    After two years of pandemic restrictions, the West Visayas State University (WVSU) held its 2022 Commencement Exercises for Undergraduate Level face-to-face at the WVSU Cultural Center on July 21, 2022.

    The graduating Class of 2022 was the first batch of graduates under the new K-12 Curriculum and the new college curriculum, with 1,177 graduating students, 793 of whom are academic awardees. 324 of the graduates were from the College of Education (COE).

    Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz, SUC President IV, introduced this year’s commencement speaker, Atty. Emilio L. Maranon III, an election lawyer, a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science alumnus, magna cum laude, and the university’s “Most Outstanding Graduate” in 2005.

    “When you go out of this university, people will question you. People will doubt you. People will underestimate you, but I am confident that having been trained in West, we are always bigger from these challenges. And when wheat is separated from the chaff, we always emerge victorious because we are from West,” said Atty. Marañon III.

    Atty. Marañon also added, “Whatever I achieved is proof that there is no limit, there is no ceiling of what we can reach, of what we can do, wherever we go.”

    Tedric Dave E. Senosa, a Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSEd) Major in Mathematics Summa Cum Laude, and this year’s Most Outstanding Graduate, led the graduating class in saying the Graduate’s Prayer.

    The COE, known as the Center of Excellence in Teacher Education in the region, has produced four (4) summa cum laude, 124 magna cum laude, and 107 cum laude graduates this academic year.

    Aside from Senosa, three other summa cum laude awardees hail from BSEd Major in Social Studies: Marcus S. Llanera, three-time Education Student Council chairperson from 2019 to 2022; Euthel Jhon A. Finlac, Student of the Year and Journalism awardee; and Hans Luigi B. Sayno.

    “I am proud that despite the changes and challenges brought by the pandemic, we stood our ground, moved forward and emerged victoriously. As the pioneer batch of K to 12 and the first batch of pandemic graduates, our journey was never easy but it is, in all sense, worth taking,” said Jayne Paul I. Sucob, BSEd Major in Science, Magna Cum Laude, and a University Senior Curriculum Council (USCC) Service Awardee.

    As the occasion went on inside the Cultural Center, family members of the graduates attended the ceremonies from outside and viewed the proceedings through two big screens in light of the university’s graduation ceremony guidelines which aim to maintain the observance of minimum health protocols such as social distancing.

  • WVSU’s Graduates of Class 2022: A Bountiful Harvest

    At the end of each school year, the grounds of WVSU become more hallowed when graduating students, together with their proud families, attend the commencement ceremony. A long-drawn battle on the academic field had been won and the graduates emerged victorious in their toga.

    Graduates of Class 2022 are from the Main and WVSU campuses in Calinog, Himamaylan, Janiuay, Pototan, and Lambunao, including the College of Forestry.

    Everybody knows what graduates go through so they can finally walk on the grand stage and receive their hard-earned diplomas. They all had their own hardships and had shown true grit to finish college. Every commencement exercise is a validation not only of the students but also of the entire university’s administrators, faculty, and staff. It takes a whole institution to produce one graduate.

    This year, more than 1,300 students graduated from baccalaureate degree programs, and 151 completed their post-graduate studies from the different programs in the Main and College of Forestry. Himamaylan Campus had a total of 299 graduates.

    The College of Education tops the list with the most graduates at 273, followed by the College of Arts and Sciences (223), College of Business and Management (182), College of Forestry (141), College of Nursing (135), College of Medicine (123), College of Information and Communication Technology (103), College of Communication (93) and College of PESCAR (61).

    The commencement exercise for the Undergraduate Level was held at the WVSU Cultural Center last July 21, while the Graduate School graduation commenced on July 23 at the same venue.

    Election lawyer Attorney Emil L. Marañon III (cum laude, Batch 2005) and Dr. Raul C. Alvarez, Jr., Director IV of CHED Regional Office 6, were commencement speakers for the Baccalaureate Degree Programs and Graduate School, respectively.


    WVSU had another bountiful harvest of graduates determined to excel in their fields and become transformative agents of change in society.

    Important Reminders:
    1. Read the instructions carefully before you start using the online application.
    2. All documentary requirements must be submitted online. Applicants with incomplete requirements will not be considered for evaluation.
    3. Applicants with existing WVSU IUIS Account (enrolled at WVSU, Main Campus from AY 2009-2010 and onwards) shall only email a Letter of Intent to the College where the applicant wishes to apply.
    4. Applicant without existing WVSU IUIS Account (graduate of WVSU External Campuses and other schools) shall fill out the IUIS Online Application Module. Please go to www.wvsu.edu.ph/how-to-apply-using-the-online-application-module/ for more info.

    For Master’s Program
    • A bachelor’s degree with a weighted average of 2.0 or its equivalent
    • Entrance examination results
    • Potential for graduate work and educational leadership based on results of interview
    • A graduate of bachelor’s degree program (For College/School of Education, the applicants are education/diploma in teaching graduates or have teaching experience.)
    • Physical and medical examination for qualified applicants
    For Doctoral Program
    • A master’s degree with a GPA of at least 1.75 or its equivalent
    • Entrance examination results
    • Potential for graduate work and educational leadership based on results of interview
    • A graduate of master’s degree program (thesis or non-thesis)
    • Physical and medical examination for qualified applicants

    III. Requirements:

    a. Transcript of Records for Evaluation Purposes only
    b. Passport Size Photo
    Note: Other Entrance Credentials shall be submitted to the respective College

    IV. Application Process

    A. Scan or take a photo of your requirement . Have the image files ready for uploading later.

    B. Provide a digital/scanned ID photo of yourself. Make sure to follow the Photo ID requirements Guide. 

    C. Your email address should have your first and last name for easier verification. It could be done on any format. Example:  firstname.lastname@gmail.com or lastname.firstname@gmail.com. If none of the format is available, try adding your birth year or birthday at the end of your email (e.g. firstname.lastname0102@gmail.com). If your current email address does not comply with the required format, create a new one using Gmail.  Use of non-complying email will result to failure of your application.

    2. Click Apply Here
    3. Fill out all text fields with correct information and select Main Campus in the list of campuses.  Make sure to supply the correct email address.  You will need that for confirmation later.
    4. Click Create Account and tick the privacy consent check box.
    5.  An email confirmation will be sent to your inbox together with your temporary login details.  Click Continue to proceed to your application.
    6. Complete Steps 1 to 5 by filling all necessary fields in the application form.  Make sure to provide correct details and check each entry for errors.  If a field is required and data is not available, input “Not Applicable” or “NA”.
    7. Upload the image files of the requirements and your ID photo.
    8. Click Save and Continue afterwards.
    9. Read the information in the Applicant Certification field and click the Submit Application after reviewing your form.
    10. The system will send your Application login credentials to your email.  You can login and view the notification board and your applicant data.  Note: This is different from your temporary account in step 5.  Use the username and password to login to the Online Application Module to view/modify your application data.
    11. Logout in the Online Application Module.
    12. Check your email regularly for notification emails from the Registrar or College(s) of the program that you applied for.

  • WVSU Exudes Nostalgia, Pride and Jubilance on Its 120th Foundation Day

    West Visayas State University celebrated its 120th Foundation Day last June 16, 2022, with well-organized, simple, but meaningful events that brought them back to the past and inspired them to look into their future as one of the region’s best universities.

    Donning their white WVSU anniversary shirts, the administration led by University President Dr. Joselito Villaruz, the administration team, unit heads, and representatives from different colleges and campuses attended the Holy Mass at the Cultural Center to open the day’s festivities.

    Setting the mood for the main event, PESCAR’s Rondalla Ensemble serenaded guests with renditions of folk music as they troop inside the center. Entitled Paghanduraw, the celebration aimed to reminisce the institution’s glorious past laden with achievements, milestones, and outstanding personages who contributed to what WVSU is now.

    After the customary entrance of the colors, prayer, the singing of the national anthem, and university hymn, WVSU President Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz gave his message to the institution that has stood the test of time for 120 years. 

    “We are facing insurmountable challenges ahead and we still have much catching up to do with other advanced higher education institutions,” said Dr. Villaruz. “Yet, I am certain that together we can achieve our goals. The public expectation is high, and the deliverables are voluminous. Therefore, much is  expected from each one of us to achieve our targets. But if we work as one, we can win as one.”

    Following the inspiring speech by Dr. Villaruz, the audience watched Through the Years…A Tale Retold, a digital presentation about the history of WVSU. Guest Speaker Dr. Elnora V. Loriega, former WVSU VPAA and Dean of the College Education, held the audience in quiet awe while she expounded on her ‘testimony of valor’.

    “Imagine the endless possibilities,” she said, “of what we can achieve working together,
    facing the unknown with valor.” Regent Bonifacio Gaverza, the alumni president, gave an impassioned oral history of WVSU in Ilonggo and a rousing tribute to the university’s heritage and accomplishments, aptly titled ‘Let thy Name Resound.’ 

    Cultural dancers from the College of PESCAR performed a series of folk dances to
    pave the way for recognizing the administrators, deans, and units headed by Dr.
    Villaruz. Student representatives gave them symbolic tokens of appreciation for the
    invaluable services rendered to WVSU while they stood together, facing the audience.

    Key WVSU officials led the procession from the Cultural Center to the Quezon Hall
    grounds, where the revered urn stands guard as a symbol of the institution’s values.
    The laying of the wreath led by Dr. Villaruz capped the morning festivities with
    solemnity.

    A cultural show entitled Panakayon sustained the celebratory mood in the afternoon,
    where guests enjoyed the numbers rendered by West Crew, Panayana Cultural Group,
    and Irong-Irong Dance Company.

  • Revered WVSU Professor and Composer of University Hymn Passes Away

    Professor Romulo J. Pangan, a retired professor of WVSU and known musical connoisseur, passed away last May 23, 2022. He completed his Bachelor of Music Education and Conducting and Bachelor of Science in Education and Filipino at the University of the Philippines.

    During his four decades-long teaching career, Professor Pangan taught music and established orchestras at Central Philippine University, Colegio Del Sagrado de Jesus, St. Vincent Ferrer Seminary, Colegio de la Inmaculada Concepción, and West Visayas State University.

    In 1965, he became the college professor of music and Filipino at West Visayas State College (WVSC). He was active in organizing and training the college choir, orchestra, and band, setting a high standard in the school’s musical output. The Pangan-trained WVSC Choir won the grand prize at the National Music Competition for Young Artists.

    Together with the late Adelina Zerrudo, Professor Pangan composed the WVSU Hymn and March. He has 236 musical compositions, of which 38 are for  WVSU, including the Centennial Hymn. 

    “Many would describe music with magical words,” said Professor Pangan, “but I would only describe it as sounds that elevate the soul.”

    Professor Romulo Pangan retired from WVSU at the age of 65. But his legacy remains embedded in the institution and will be remembered for his excellence in music, culture, and arts.

  • WVSU inks int’l exchange program with Spain’s Univ of Deusto

    ILOILO City — A representative of the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union from Universidad de Deusto visited the West Visayas State University (WVSU) on March 28, 2022 in view of a cooperation for the exchange of students and/or academic staff.
    Dr. Edurne Bartolome, a social scientist and PhD lecturer at the Universidad de Deusto paid a courtesy call to the Office of WVSU President Joselito Villaruz, currently represented by OIC President Celina Gellada.
    She was also welcomed by Project FORTH (Formation of Teachers in Challenged Areas) Coordinator and WVSU Vice President Ma. Asuncion Christine Dequilla and Project FORTH trainer and module writer Dr. Purita Bilbao who will be accompanying Dr. Bartolome in Iloilo and Aklan until April 1, 2022 when she returns to Spain.
    WVSU and University of Deusto’s agreement “commits to respect the quality requirements of the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education in all aspects of the organization and management of the mobility, in particular the recognition of the credits (or equivalent) awarded to students by the partner institution.”
    The above Inter-institutional agreement 2021-2022 has the University of Deusto assessing applicants of WVSU in a selection process of who best fits the academic offerings of the said University whereas University of Deusto sends its students and professors to WVSU.
    Signing the agreement for University of Deusto was Dr. Alex Rayon Jerez, vice rector for International Relations and for WVSU, Ms. Edel Carmela Subong-Csoka, director of the International and Local Linkages Office. /PN

  • WVSU launches institutional internationalization

    The urn, a West Visayas State University symbol, oozes with life as it records the past, symbolizes the present, and inspires the future. As the era of today heads towards internationalization, the university courageously rejected the notion of getting left behind.

    WVSU braves the arena of internationalization by conducting an impactful event termed as #ReSpACE: The Redesign of Specialized Access to Connectivity and Engagement – A Glocalized Delivery of Internationalization Programs and Partnerships. The university, through the International and Local Linkages Office (ILLO), with its dynamic Director Edel Carmela Subong-Csoka, incredibly materialized the international meeting of minds on December 20-22, 2021.

    The entire WVSU community and its passionately driven University President, Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz unconditionally united to welcome with wide open arms both the perks and perils of internationalization.

    The 3-day online event was full of messages of gratitude as expressed by the WVSU community. The resource persons effectively brought inspiration and motivation as they shared their expertise on internationalization.

    As the strengths and key niches of the university were identified, WVSU became prepared to launch and sustain its internationalization program.

    The 3-day virtual activity was only the start of the promising future of the university as the WVSU became completely ready to conquer the world.

  • CILPI to conduct 1st International Students’ Day event

    West Visayas State University (WVSU), through the Center for International Linkages and Public Information (CILPI) ,will hold its first International Students’ Day celebration, in partnership with University Distance Education, Center for Foreign Languages, and the Foreign Languages Students’ Society, the official student body organization of Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Languages in WVSU.

    With the theme, “WVSU Students Around the World: Learning as One for Environment, Equality, and Peace”, the event aims for participants to learn different cultures, to recognize the University’s international students and WVSU graduates excelling around the globe, and to develop strong camaraderie among local and international students of the University.
