  • WVSU-CICT’s BSEMC pioneer batch graduates this year

    WVSU-CICT’s Bachelor of Science in Entertainment and Multimedia Computing (BSEMC) pioneer batch graduated this year, as West Visayas State University holds its face-to-face Commencement Exercises 2022 on July 21, 2022, at the WVSU Cultural Center and streamed live on WVSU Facebook Page.

    The Bachelor of Science in Entertainment and Multimedia Computing (BSEMC) program is one of the newest recognized programs by the Commission on Higher Education. The CHED first recognized WVSU’s BSEMC program in 2018, with Mr. Evan Sumido who was assigned as BSEMC Department Chair. Its main objective is to produce professional artists in charge of creating multimedia art products in the fields of science, entertainment, education, simulations, and advertising.

    The first cohort of the BSEMC was launched last 2018 with 2 specializations: Digital Animation Technology and Game Development, at West Visayas State University-College of Information and Communication Technology, under Dr. Joel De Castro, former CICT Dean. The total of 18 students under BSEMC majoring in Digital Animation Technology received their diplomas last July 21, 2022. Out of 18 BSEMC students, 11 graduated with Latin honors, with two Magna Cum Laude, and nine Cum Laude.

    This batch also brought back the Alima Artists’ Group, which became the degree’s official student group, led by Paolo Jose Abulencia. At the most recent University Virtual Org Fest 2021, the Alima Artists’ Group was hailed as the champions in a promotional video contest out of hundred organizations inside the campus.

    During their Internship Training Program, the BSEMC Senior students were dispersed around various companies and studios namely, ADA Asia, Mulave Studios, Panay News, Prometheus, and GTBI on their on-the-job training which developed their expertise and get them ready for their future professions. In fact, before graduation, three BSEMC students were employed by their on-the-job training studios.

    BSEMC degree in the Philippines is one of the most sought-after employment options due to the global rise of technology. The entertainment and multimedia sectors seek competitive and competent professionals to be their partners in the sector as it has been evolving for years.

  • WVSU holds in-person graduation; four summa cum laude grads from COE

    After two years of pandemic restrictions, the West Visayas State University (WVSU) held its 2022 Commencement Exercises for Undergraduate Level face-to-face at the WVSU Cultural Center on July 21, 2022.

    The graduating Class of 2022 was the first batch of graduates under the new K-12 Curriculum and the new college curriculum, with 1,177 graduating students, 793 of whom are academic awardees. 324 of the graduates were from the College of Education (COE).

    Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz, SUC President IV, introduced this year’s commencement speaker, Atty. Emilio L. Maranon III, an election lawyer, a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science alumnus, magna cum laude, and the university’s “Most Outstanding Graduate” in 2005.

    “When you go out of this university, people will question you. People will doubt you. People will underestimate you, but I am confident that having been trained in West, we are always bigger from these challenges. And when wheat is separated from the chaff, we always emerge victorious because we are from West,” said Atty. Marañon III.

    Atty. Marañon also added, “Whatever I achieved is proof that there is no limit, there is no ceiling of what we can reach, of what we can do, wherever we go.”

    Tedric Dave E. Senosa, a Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSEd) Major in Mathematics Summa Cum Laude, and this year’s Most Outstanding Graduate, led the graduating class in saying the Graduate’s Prayer.

    The COE, known as the Center of Excellence in Teacher Education in the region, has produced four (4) summa cum laude, 124 magna cum laude, and 107 cum laude graduates this academic year.

    Aside from Senosa, three other summa cum laude awardees hail from BSEd Major in Social Studies: Marcus S. Llanera, three-time Education Student Council chairperson from 2019 to 2022; Euthel Jhon A. Finlac, Student of the Year and Journalism awardee; and Hans Luigi B. Sayno.

    “I am proud that despite the changes and challenges brought by the pandemic, we stood our ground, moved forward and emerged victoriously. As the pioneer batch of K to 12 and the first batch of pandemic graduates, our journey was never easy but it is, in all sense, worth taking,” said Jayne Paul I. Sucob, BSEd Major in Science, Magna Cum Laude, and a University Senior Curriculum Council (USCC) Service Awardee.

    As the occasion went on inside the Cultural Center, family members of the graduates attended the ceremonies from outside and viewed the proceedings through two big screens in light of the university’s graduation ceremony guidelines which aim to maintain the observance of minimum health protocols such as social distancing.

    WVSU President Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz stood behind the podium like a proud father in front of his children, the Graduating Class of  2022. The commencement ceremony last July 21, 2022, held at the Cultural Center, was the culmination of fulfilled aspirations by the graduates and their families. 

    Graduation opens doors of opportunities, and the youthful graduates are determined to take on the world with wide-open eyes, ready to put their mark on society. Aware of the significance of this academic milestone, Dr. Villaruz equaled the fire he saw in the graduates’ eyes with his insightful and inspiring message. 

    “Dear graduates, each one of you holds the pen to write the future of your generation,” Dr. Villaruz wrote. “While it is true that there may be difficulties and uncertainties along the way, far more opportunities arise.”

    In the aftermath of the graduation, the University President offers nuggets of fatherly counsel: rising above setbacks, learning from one’s mistakes, finding peace with yourself, and using the power of dreams to succeed, among others. 

    Below is the full graduation message of  WVSU President Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz to the Graduates of Class 2022:

    My sincere congratulations to the graduates of Class 2022 for making it amidst the pandemic. The “generational challenge” brought about by Covid 19 has influenced all facets of society, especially your education. But remember that the post-COVID era is yet to be written. 

    Dear graduates, each one of you holds the pen to write your generation’s future. While it is true that there may be difficulties and uncertainties along the way, far more opportunities arise. Although some failures in life are inevitable, dreams serve as a yardstick as it uncovers your willpower. 

    Do not allow setbacks to drown out your inner voice and deter you from achieving your full potential. Dreams can empower you through every obstacle pitched against you. It will propel you to overcome fears, hardships, and rejections. Have the courage to follow your dreams, listen to your heart, and keep fighting for what you believe. Remember that there are no limitations to what you can accomplish.

    Bear in mind to be true to who you really are. Learn lessons from the mistakes and failures of the past. Always strive to be at peace with yourself because only then you will find true happiness. You do not need a magic wand to change the world. You have within you the power to make a change, to make a difference, to make the world a better place for your generation and the generations to come. 

    As you graduate and embark on the journey of self-exploration and self-discovery of opportunities under the new normal, always be guided by your dreams – your north star, coupled with the right values and attitude. Let it illuminate your path and beacon you in the right direction. 

    Now is the time to take charge of your life and future. Be relevant and decide what really matters to you. I expect you, my dear graduates, to embrace a culture of excellence, morality, integrity, harmony, and love of work. 

    May God be with you always as you realize your dreams and find your rightful place underneath the sun!

  • WVSU Lauds Honest GSO Employees for Returning Lost Wallet

    There is no such thing as ‘small’ honesty.

    Honesty is honesty, whether a person returns a bagful of cash or a purse with few coins to its rightful owner. The lyrics of an old song say ‘honesty is a lonely word’ – but not at West Visayas State University.

    On May 25, 2022, Ms. Kyla Angelli P. Padilla, a second-year BCAEd student, lost her wallet on the school premises and reported the incident to Security Officer Victor Alfaro. While the security officers prepared to initiate a search, a personnel informed them that a wallet had been found and turned over to the President’s Office.

    Three personnel from the General Services Office (GSO), namely, Mr. Reynaldo Duma-up, Mr. Jerry Berinio, and Mr. Randy Sustraido, found and turned over Padilla’s lost wallet containing P5,330 with valuable personal papers ducked in it.

    The Human Resource and Management Office (HRMO) validated the incident and recommended an award for the honest employees who returned the wallet. WVSU PRAISE committee deliberated and approved the recommendation of the HRMO.

    WVSU gives the Gantimpala Agad Award (“On-the-Spot” Award)  to employees commended by clients for their courtesy, promptness, efficiency, honesty, and dedication to duty.

    Mr. Reynaldo Duma-up, Mr. Jerry Berinio, and Mr. Randy Sustraido received the Gantimpala Agad Award from Dr. Ricky M. Magno (OIC-Office of the President), Mr. Agustin Cabahug Jr. (Supervising Administrative Officer, Human Resource Management Office), Mr. Romeo Y. Sollano Jr. (Supervising Administrative Officer, General Services Office), and Mrs. Joy Concepcion L. Fullo (President, WVSU Non-Teaching Personnel Organization inc.). The simple awarding ceremony was held at the WVSU Unity Park after the flag raising on July 4, 2022.

    In WVSU, honesty excels.

  • WVSU’s Graduates of Class 2022: A Bountiful Harvest

    At the end of each school year, the grounds of WVSU become more hallowed when graduating students, together with their proud families, attend the commencement ceremony. A long-drawn battle on the academic field had been won and the graduates emerged victorious in their toga.

    Graduates of Class 2022 are from the Main and WVSU campuses in Calinog, Himamaylan, Janiuay, Pototan, and Lambunao, including the College of Forestry.

    Everybody knows what graduates go through so they can finally walk on the grand stage and receive their hard-earned diplomas. They all had their own hardships and had shown true grit to finish college. Every commencement exercise is a validation not only of the students but also of the entire university’s administrators, faculty, and staff. It takes a whole institution to produce one graduate.

    This year, more than 1,300 students graduated from baccalaureate degree programs, and 151 completed their post-graduate studies from the different programs in the Main and College of Forestry. Himamaylan Campus had a total of 299 graduates.

    The College of Education tops the list with the most graduates at 273, followed by the College of Arts and Sciences (223), College of Business and Management (182), College of Forestry (141), College of Nursing (135), College of Medicine (123), College of Information and Communication Technology (103), College of Communication (93) and College of PESCAR (61).

    The commencement exercise for the Undergraduate Level was held at the WVSU Cultural Center last July 21, while the Graduate School graduation commenced on July 23 at the same venue.

    Election lawyer Attorney Emil L. Marañon III (cum laude, Batch 2005) and Dr. Raul C. Alvarez, Jr., Director IV of CHED Regional Office 6, were commencement speakers for the Baccalaureate Degree Programs and Graduate School, respectively.


    WVSU had another bountiful harvest of graduates determined to excel in their fields and become transformative agents of change in society.

  • Western Visayas joins SUC Fair 2022

    State universities and colleges in Western Visayas led by focal designate SUC West Visayas State University will be participating in SUC Fair 2022 from June 28 to July 1, 2022 at the SM Mall of Asia (MOA) Music Hall. The national university fair makes an exciting comeback after a two-year hiatus brought about by the pandemic. This  year’s  SUC fair will commemorate the Commission on Higher Education’s 28th anniversary as well as National Higher Education Day as a venue to recognize the invaluable contribution of stakeholders in advancing higher education, research and development and to showcase  the products and talents of SUCS from all over the country.

     

    As the center of education in the heart of the Philippines, SUCS in Western Visayas will collectively be promoting sustained excellence, unified efforts and competitive standards  through a regional bazaar product display of innovative products that will showcase the best that the region has to offer. Visayan Vignettes will also be presented through an engaging cultural show as well as exciting fair competitions.

    • A graduate of master’s degree program (thesis or non-thesis)

    A. Scan or take a photo of your requirement . Have the image files ready for uploading later.

    B. Provide a digital/scanned ID photo of yourself. Make sure to follow the Photo ID requirements Guide. 

    C. Your email address should have your first and last name for easier verification. It could be done on any format. Example:  firstname.lastname@gmail.com or lastname.firstname@gmail.com. If none of the format is available, try adding your birth year or birthday at the end of your email (e.g. firstname.lastname0102@gmail.com). If your current email address does not comply with the required format, create a new one using Gmail.  Use of non-complying email will result to failure of your application.

    3. Fill out all text fields with correct information and select Main Campus in the list of campuses.  Make sure to supply the correct email address.  You will need that for confirmation later.
    4. Click Create Account and tick the privacy consent check box.
    5.  An email confirmation will be sent to your inbox together with your temporary login details.  Click Continue to proceed to your application.
    6. Complete Steps 1 to 5 by filling all necessary fields in the application form.  Make sure to provide correct details and check each entry for errors.  If a field is required and data is not available, input “Not Applicable” or “NA”.
    7. Upload the image files of the requirements and your ID photo.
    8. Click Save and Continue afterwards.
    9. Read the information in the Applicant Certification field and click the Submit Application after reviewing your form.
    10. The system will send your Application login credentials to your email.  You can login and view the notification board and your applicant data.  Note: This is different from your temporary account in step 5.  Use the username and password to login to the Online Application Module to view/modify your application data.
    11. Logout in the Online Application Module.

  • WVSU Exudes Nostalgia, Pride and Jubilance on Its 120th Foundation Day

    West Visayas State University celebrated its 120th Foundation Day last June 16, 2022, with well-organized, simple, but meaningful events that brought them back to the past and inspired them to look into their future as one of the region’s best universities.

    Donning their white WVSU anniversary shirts, the administration led by University President Dr. Joselito Villaruz, the administration team, unit heads, and representatives from different colleges and campuses attended the Holy Mass at the Cultural Center to open the day’s festivities.

    Setting the mood for the main event, PESCAR’s Rondalla Ensemble serenaded guests with renditions of folk music as they troop inside the center. Entitled Paghanduraw, the celebration aimed to reminisce the institution’s glorious past laden with achievements, milestones, and outstanding personages who contributed to what WVSU is now.

    After the customary entrance of the colors, prayer, the singing of the national anthem, and university hymn, WVSU President Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz gave his message to the institution that has stood the test of time for 120 years. 

    “We are facing insurmountable challenges ahead and we still have much catching up to do with other advanced higher education institutions,” said Dr. Villaruz. “Yet, I am certain that together we can achieve our goals. The public expectation is high, and the deliverables are voluminous. Therefore, much is  expected from each one of us to achieve our targets. But if we work as one, we can win as one.”

    Following the inspiring speech by Dr. Villaruz, the audience watched Through the Years…A Tale Retold, a digital presentation about the history of WVSU. Guest Speaker Dr. Elnora V. Loriega, former WVSU VPAA and Dean of the College Education, held the audience in quiet awe while she expounded on her ‘testimony of valor’.

    “Imagine the endless possibilities,” she said, “of what we can achieve working together,
    facing the unknown with valor.” Regent Bonifacio Gaverza, the alumni president, gave an impassioned oral history of WVSU in Ilonggo and a rousing tribute to the university’s heritage and accomplishments, aptly titled ‘Let thy Name Resound.’ 

    Cultural dancers from the College of PESCAR performed a series of folk dances to
    pave the way for recognizing the administrators, deans, and units headed by Dr.
    Villaruz. Student representatives gave them symbolic tokens of appreciation for the
    invaluable services rendered to WVSU while they stood together, facing the audience.

    Key WVSU officials led the procession from the Cultural Center to the Quezon Hall
    grounds, where the revered urn stands guard as a symbol of the institution’s values.
    The laying of the wreath led by Dr. Villaruz capped the morning festivities with
    solemnity.

    A cultural show entitled Panakayon sustained the celebratory mood in the afternoon,
    where guests enjoyed the numbers rendered by West Crew, Panayana Cultural Group,
    and Irong-Irong Dance Company.

  • WVSU to continue singing its hymn for another 120 years – and beyond

    Today, West Visayas State University achieved a momentous milestone on its 120th founding anniversary. The foundation day affirms the commitment and resilience of its leaders, administrators, faculty, students, alumni, employees, and stakeholders through years of ups and downs.

    With humble beginnings, known then as Iloilo Normal School in 1902, the institution evolved under the leadership of capable school administrators and presidents who brought the school higher to another level during their terms.

    After becoming West Visayas State College in 1965, the institution received university status in 1986. By 1987, WVSU acquired Don Benito V. Lopez Memorial Hospital (now known as West Visayas State University Medical Center), a venue for training and learning for students in the medical and allied services. The university’s medical and nursing programs are among the best in the country, scoring consistently with a high passing rate.

    Eventually, the university grew and established external campuses in Lambunao, Calinog, Himamaylan, Janiuay, and Pototan. Graduates in other programs are equally excellent and excel in education, communications, business, arts, sciences, technology, social sciences, agriculture, sports, and culture as professionals and industry practitioners.

    The institution survived the horrors of World War II, thrived under the administration of American governors and several Philippine presidents, withstood countless natural disasters, lived through socio-political unrests, and presently weathering the challenges of the global pandemic.

    The reasons for celebrating WVSU’s 120th Founding Anniversary are as countless as the people who grew with it since 1902. Every person who became part of the institution since its founding shared a heartbeat to keep WVSU alive through their services and sacrifices.

    From a dream a university grew, / Stirring hearts with a hero’s refrain. / Out of darkness, faith renew / That our toils should not fade in vain./ West Visayas State University, Hold thy banner high, / Let genius bridge the earth / And boundless sky. 

    WVSU will continue singing its hymn for another 120 years – and beyond.
