    AI, Education Global Solidarity take center stage at WVSU International Students’ Day

    The West Visayas State University (WVSU) celebrated International Students’ Day 2025 on November 14 at the WVSU Cultural Center, highlighting the theme “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation”.

    Organized by the DagYoung Student Ambassadors in partnership with the University of Antique (UA), Philippine Normal University (PNU), and Mohawk College, Canada, the celebration brought together students from WVSU’s main and external campuses, alongside delegates from partner institutions.

    Leadership and International Support

    WVSU President Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz officially welcomed the participants, reaffirming the University’s commitment to global education and its mission to integrate international perspectives into Philippine higher learning. His message was followed by an inspiring note of support from Katie Burrows, Vice President of Mohawk College, who emphasized the critical role of cross-border partnerships in preparing students for a technology-driven world.

    Exploring AI Through Multi-Disciplinary Perspectives

    The event’s highlight was a multi-disciplinary panel discussion examining how artificial intelligence is reshaping education and redefining future skill demands.

    Prof. Bryan Dayuta of Philippine Normal University opened the discourse by exploring AI and critical thinking, urging students to leverage technology to enhance—not replace—intellectual inquiry.

    From WVSU’s College of Information and Communications Technology, Dr. Frank Elijorde discussed the emergence of human-AI fusion jobs and the competencies needed to thrive in these evolving fields.

    Dr. Sammy Militante of the University of Antique shed light on the rising demand for AI literacy within the humanities, advocating for cross-disciplinary adaptability.

    Adding a legal perspective, Atty. Regina Gustilo of the WVSU College of Law addressed the ethical and regulatory dimensions of AI, highlighting issues related to data privacy, accountability, and responsible use.

    Student Ambassadors Take the Conversation Forward

    Active participation from student leaders further enriched the dialogue, with insights coming from the DagYoung Student Ambassadors represented by Vice Chair Benz Dominique Delariman, the PNU InVoLB Student Ambassadors led by President Kobe Brylle Tolentino , and the UA Red Ambassadors. WVSU students who recently participated in the Canada ASEAN Seed Program also shared their student exchange experiences at Mohawk College, offering valuable perspectives on international learning and cross-cultural engagement. Their contributions added youthful energy to the discussion and reflected the growing global awareness among student ambassadors as they navigated the opportunities and challenges brought by AI.

    Strengthening Institutional Partnerships

    WVSU International and Local Linkages Office Director Ms. Edel Carmela Subong-Csoka, University of Antique Director of International Affairs Ms. Jennylyn Omadio, and PNU Linkages and International Office Director Prof. Bryan Dayuta delivered a collective message of commitment. They reaffirmed their institutions’ shared pledge to promote inclusive internationalization, strengthen collaborative programs, and prepare learners with AI-ready skills for the global landscape.

    A Closing Filled with Unity and Cultural Expression

    The celebration culminated with a heartfelt rendition of the Solidarity Song performed by WVSU TeatroTayo, capturing the spirit of unity and shared purpose among the participants. The performance also served as a symbolic tribute to the student ambassadors whose efforts strengthened the collaboration and cultural exchange showcased throughout the event.

    This year’s International Students’ Day emphasized the growing importance of global collaboration and AI literacy while underscoring the responsibility of educational institutions to preserve human agency in an era of rapid automation.

    West Visayas State University formalized partnership with Biorisk Association of the Philippines Inc.

    West Visayas State University (WVSU) formalized a partnership with the Biorisk Association of the Philippines Inc. (BRAP2015) through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed Nov. 13 at the WVSU Boardroom. The agreement aims to enhance biosafety practices, promote research collaborations, and foster a culture of safety across all campuses.

    Under the MOU, WVSU and BRAP will implement programs to improve biosafety protocols, support collaborative research efforts, and ensure compliance with both national and international safety standards. These initiatives are designed to strengthen the university’s role in advancing modern education through science while emphasizing safety and responsibility.

    WVSU President Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz led the signing ceremony, joined by Dr. Celina C. Gellada, Vice President for Medical and Allied Sciences; Dr. Victor A. Amantillo, dean of the College of Medicine, and other university officials, while BRAP was represented by President Dr. Ronaldo E. Puno, Secretary Ariel Angelo B. Aquino, along with other members.

    This partnership underscores WVSU’s commitment to maintaining high biosafety standards in its academic and research activities, inviting the entire university community to actively participate in promoting best practices that benefit society today and foster a sustainable future.

    WVSU at EDUtech Asia limitless potential in learning with AI

    Highlighting its continued presence in the international education arena, Ms. Edel Carmela Subong-Csoka, Director of the International and Local Linkages Office (ILLO), represented West Visayas State University (WVSU) at the 10th edition of EDUtech Asia, held on November 5-6, 2025 at the Sands Expo & Convention Centre, Singapore.

    Carrying the theme “Positive Disruption: Unlocking Limitless Potential in Education with AI and Technology,” this year’s EDUtech Asia gathered more than 10,000 education leaders, policymakers, researchers, and technology innovators from across Asia.

    The keynote sessions featured globally recognized thought leaders in education reform and digital transformation. Professor Pasi Sahlberg of the University of Melbourne emphasized that many schools today are “tech-rich but transformation-poor,” urging education institutions to adopt technology with clear purpose and pedagogical intent.

    Dr. Yuhyun Park, creator of the Digital Intelligence Framework, discussed building AI literacy as an essential skill for learners in an increasingly data-driven world. Futurist Graham Brown-Martin explored how AI, immersive tools, and human-centered learning will converge to shape the future of global education ecosystems.

    One of the most anticipated segments of the event was the live debate between Professor Sahlberg and Associate Professor Dr. Ng Pak Tee of Singapore’s National Institute of Education, which examined whether AI could ever replicate the irreplaceable human element of teaching, or whether the future lies in a collaborative partnership between human and machine intelligence.

    Throughout the two-day event, Ms. Edel participated in roundtable discussions, networking sessions, and collaborative learning exchanges with delegates from universities and schools across Asia. Highlights included EDUtech Asia’s engaging “Show & Tell” sessions, where educators shared practical insights with their peers, and the highly anticipated Planet Protectors Sustainability Challenge, which encouraged students to champion sustainability initiatives.

    The program also featured practical showcases on how schools can establish and grow robotics programs, how artificial intelligence can support and enhance essay writing and other academic processes, the use of AI-powered platforms to strengthen self-directed learning, innovative methods for simplifying medical and health science concepts for 21st-century learners, and strategies for developing future-ready school ecosystems where AI-driven tools support—but do not replace—daily instruction.

    WVSU’s participation in EDUtech Asia reflects the University’s commitment to global engagement and its continued pursuit of innovative, human-centered approaches to teaching and learning.

    WVSU CRISMEd expands international research collaborations with India’s MDMC-QSER through MoU signing

    A new chapter in international academic collaboration unfolded at West Visayas State University as the Center for Research and Innovations in Science, Mathematics, and Education (CRISMEd) welcomed partners from India’s Model Divine Mahila College – Quantum Science and Education Research Hub (MDMC-QSER) for the formal signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on November 3, at the International and Local Linkages Office.

    Spearheading this initiative is Dr. Geneveve Parreño-Lachica, CRISMEd Director, together with Assoc. Prof. Ashish Tyagi of MDMC-QSER. Supporting the coordination efforts were Mr. Vijit Vinod Nautiyal, Research Fellow, and Dr. Aris C. Larroder, Host Professor.

    Expressions of institutional support were shared by WVSU President Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz, represented by Dr. Celina C. Gellada, and Assistant Prof. Bhavna Vidhani, MDMC-QSER Director, represented by Mr. Nautiyal.

    The collaboration is rooted in a shared commitment to advance research and academic engagement through responsible innovation, equitable knowledge exchange, and transformative learning. The agreement opens opportunities for co-developed research initiatives, academic exchanges, and collaborative scholarly activities that benefit both institutions.

    The ceremony was also attended by Dr. Greta G. Gabinete, Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension; Dr. Ryan Michael F. Oducado, Director of the University Research and Development Center; Dr. Alexander J. Balsomo, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences; and Ms. Erika Eunice P. Salvador, representative from the Philippine Science High School.

    Through this collaboration, WVSU strengthens its position in global research networks, demonstrating that academic growth thrives when knowledge, culture, and partnerships intersect.

    WVSU shines in National Statistics Month, named Best NSM Agency in Western Visayas

    West Visayas State University (WVSU) emerged as one of the top performers in the 2025 National Statistics Month (NSM) celebration, earning the Best NSM Agency Award in Western Visayas during the closing and awarding ceremony held on Oct. 28 at the RDC Hall, DEPDev VI.

    With this year’s theme, “Accelerating the SDG Pace of Progress: Mobilizing Data for All,” the recognition affirms WVSU’s strong commitment to advancing statistical awareness and promoting data-driven initiatives that contribute to sustainable national development.

    Students from the BS Applied Mathematics program also brought pride to the university, as William Jess Laurence M. Centina and Alyana Angel P. Carman, mentored by Ms. Rosemarie M. Java, won second place in the 18th Statistical Analysis Contest, which tested participants’ ability to analyze, interpret, visualize, and communicate data effectively.

    In addition, Mr. John Alexis B. Gemino of the CAS Mathematics Department secured third place and received the Most Reacted Entry Award in the Statistical Infographics Contest, while the department was recognized for its Outstanding Contribution as committee chair of the Statistical Infomercial Contest.

    Through these awards, WVSU continues to exemplify excellence, creativity, and innovation—values that guide the university’s mission to strengthen statistical literacy and use of data in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and advancing regional and national progress.

    WVSU Federated Alumni Assocation launces internet Scholarship Program

    The West Visayas State University Federated Alumni Association Inc. (WVSUFAAI) officially launched its Internet Scholarship Program on Oct. 17, 2025, reaffirming the alumni’s commitment to supporting student learning and digital access.

    A total of 24 student scholars, nominated by their respective college deans, were selected as the first beneficiaries of the program. Each scholar will receive a ₱500 monthly internet allowance for the entire academic year, from August 2025 until the end of the second semester. The financial support comes from pledges made by alumni benefactors.

    During the launch, Prof. Bonifacio P. Gaverza, WVSUFAAI President, welcomed the scholars and commended the initiative’s role in improving digital access and learning opportunities.

    Atty. Nestor Jeremy Moreno, Chairman of the Internet Scholarship Program, oriented the scholars on the program’s objectives and guidelines.

    Dr. Celina C. Gellada, Vice President for Medical and Allied Sciences and OIC University President, encouraged the recipients to persevere in their studies and make the most of the opportunity.

    Also part of the ceremony were the presentation of donors and beneficiaries by WVSUFAAI Assistant Secretary Ana R. Farin and a closing message from Dr. Rodolfo A. Guillergan, Jr.

    Held at the WVSU Board Room, the launch underscored the alumni association’s commitment to promoting digital inclusion and educational equity, empowering students through accessible, technology-enabled learning.

    WVSU, JNU drive global innovation through Digital Transformation collaboration

    West Visayas State University (WVSU) welcomed professors from Jeju National University (JNU), South Korea, as part of the collaborative engagement visit for the Proposed Digital Transformation initiative between the two institutions, which runs from October 18 to 22, 2025.

    The delegation from JNU is composed of Professor Kang Cheol-woong, Vice President for Research; Professor Yung Cheol Byun, Project Leader; and Professor Kim Yong-woon, Researcher.

    Dr. Celina C. Gellada, Vice President for Medical and Allied Sciences and Officer-in-Charge President, expressed appreciation for the enduring partnership that has flourished between the two universities for more than fifteen years. She emphasized WVSU’s dedication to fostering global alliances that support the university’s vision of driving digital innovation and research excellence.

    Also present during the visit were Ms. Edel Carmela Subong-Csoka, Director of the International and Local Linkages Office; Dr. Ma. Beth S. Concepcion, Dean of the College of Information and Communications Technology; and Prof. Shem Durst Elijah Sandig, Internationalization Coordinator.

    The engagement focuses on strengthening initiatives in AI and digital transformation aligned with WVSU’s programs under the College of Information and Communications Technology and the Center for Digital Transformation (CDx) of WVSU. It also includes joint consultations and planning sessions for a proposed project on AI and digital innovation in Western Visayas under the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) Official Development Assistance (ODA) framework.

    Anchored on the Memorandum of Understanding between the Jeju National University–Regional Innovation System and Education (RISE) and the WVSU Center for Digital Transformation for Governance Project (CDx), the activity reinforces both universities shared mission to advance smart education, research collaboration, and sustainable regional development.

    This collaboration represents another significant milestone in WVSU’s pursuit of global engagement and leadership in technology-enabled education and research.

    Dagyoung Student Ambassadors foster global citizenship through SDGs workshop

    DagYoung Student Ambassadors (DSA) from various colleges of the West Visayas State University (WVSU) main campus took part in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) workshop during SYNC: Shaping Youth, Nurturing Connections held on October 10 at the Center for Teaching Excellence Hall.

    Dr. Louis Placido F. Lachica, WVSU Focal Person for the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UN SDSN) initiatives, served as the resource speaker for the session.

    He discussed the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their significance in addressing issues such as poverty, education, equality, and climate change. Dr. Lachica also emphasized how student ambassadors can contribute by integrating SDG-oriented values and communication into their campus and community initiatives.

    One of the highlights of the session was the “Rank the Goals” workshop, where participants formed small groups and ranked the 17 SDGs according to what they believed were the most urgent for today’s generation. Each group presented their top three priorities, which led to meaningful exchanges of ideas on pressing youth and global concerns.

    The ambassadors also shared personal insights on which goals resonated with them most and why they believe these goals must be addressed in today’s world.

    Through the workshop, the DSAs strengthened their understanding of global issues and reaffirmed their commitment to becoming advocates of sustainable change—living out the essence of youth leadership with purpose and responsibility.

    WVSU delegates receive recognition at PASUC VI-Extension Managers’ Council for leadership and innovation in extension papers

    The West Visayas State University faculty extension delegates garnered multiple awards during the14th Philippine Association of State University and Colleges VI – Extension Managers’ Council (PASUC-EMC) Annual Regional Symposium and General Assembly last September 30 – October 2, 2025 at the University of Antique with the theme, “Extension Beyond Boundaries: Strengthening Impact Through Innovation, Inclusion, and Integration”. 

    Among the delegates who presented their paper, Dr. Elias C. Olapane from WVSU Calinog Campus received Best Paper and Best Presenter awards in the Transformative Education, Culture and Social-Behavioral Sciences cluster, with co-project leader Dr. Mary Jean Cataluña in their paper, “UpSKilling DepEd Teachers Research-Led Teaching Through a Capability Training Series”. 

    Similarly, Dr. Maria Corazon M. Samorin from the College of Business and Management, secured 2nd place in the Best Extension Paper category for her work titled “Empowering Transport Cooperatives through Innovative Extension: Insights from Project ITTC” under the Environmental Stewardship, Climate Action, and Circular Economy category. Another notable award is from WVSU Pototan Campus, where Dr. Charlie Domido secured 3rd place for Best Extension Paper in the Environmental Stewardship, Climate Action, and Circular Economy category.

    Additionally, Dr. Virginia B. Parreñas, also from WVSU Pototan Campus, earned 3rd place in the Community-Based Health, Nutrition, and Wellness category. Meanwhile, the documentary Rays of Hope was awarded Best Video Documentary, with Prof. Sheila P. Beliran from the College of Nursing serving as the Project Leader. 

    In addition, research presenters—Dr. Jovie L. Caballero from Calinog Campus, and Dr. Pauline M. Torion along with Prof. Joenarex N. Bautista from Janiuay Campus—presented their respective extension papers. Panel evaluators from the university consists of Prof. Sheila P. Beliran, Dr. Julie Gay B. Quidato, Dr. Alma Jean A. Subong, and Dr. Raymund B. Moreno.

    Also present during the symposium and awarding ceremony was Dr. Ricky P. Becodo, the Director of the University Development Center and Chairman of PASUC VI EMC, Inc., demonstrating strong institutional support.

    This symposium exemplifies the university’s ongoing dedication to fostering innovative projects that benefit and uplift the community.

    WVSU-CBM’s Team Dungánan defends Service Category crown at BIDA 2025

    Team Dungánan of the West Visayas State University College of Business and Management (WVSU-CBM) once again proved its edge on the national stage, clinching the Service Category championship at the 19th Business Idea and Development Award (BIDA) 2025. 

    The team, which represented CBM with a business paper on preserving heirloom dishes, successfully defended its 2024 title against contenders from Capiz State University and Our Lady of Fatima University.

    The back-to-back win underscores CBM’s commitment to both innovation and cultural preservation. This year’s BIDA drew more than 70 entries nationwide. From the pool, 32 teams advanced to the second level of screening, where participants submitted full business plans and video presentations. Only 15 were chosen as finalists to present on-site in Taguig City, competing in Service, Technology, Food, Non-Food, and Agriculture categories. 

    The Business Idea and Development Award, or BIDA, is an annual competition organized by the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry to recognize innovative and sustainable business ideas, products, technologies, and services, primarily from students.

    The program seeks to foster an entrepreneurial culture, support sustainable economic growth in the Philippines, and encourage youth to develop creative solutions for national development. Team Dungánan was composed of Kisha Antoniette Hojilla (BSBA FM), Thomas Edward Segundera (BSHM), Kyle Cabaobao (BSBA FM), Joriel Agustina Marie Alvarez (BSTM), and John Richard Inorino (BSCM).

    Guiding them throughout the competition were coaches Nichol John J. Raymundo and Maria Corazon M. Samorin. The win solidifies CBM’s standing in national competitions, highlighting the college’s drive to develop future leaders who can create socially relevant and sustainable business ideas.
