A generous amount of one million five hundred thousand pesos (Php1, 500,000.00) was donated by alumnus Dr. Henry Albert D’ Sanson to the College of Medicine West Visayas State University for the construction of the Faculty, Alumni, and Student Appreciation Center (FASAC). A Memorandum of Agreement was signed by WVSU President Dr. Luis M. Sorolla, Jr., Vice President for Administration and Finance (VPAF) Dr. Bobby. G. Gerardo, COM Dean Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz, COM Associate Dean Dr. Jose Nemesio A. Granada, and Dr. Sanson’s representative Dr. Lusyl Gomez. The MoA signing was done on March 22, 2017 at the Center for International Linkages and Public Information (CILPI) Lounge.
“I am representing my classmate Dr. Sanson today as he generously gives this financial gift of love to our Alma Mater,” Dr. Gomez began, “As part of the dynamic batch of 1984 COM graduates, we want to give back to the department and to the university that molded us to what we are now. WVSU-COM will always have a place in our hearts”.
With a floor area measuring 5.8m x 10m, the FASAC will be situated at the 2nd floor of the newly constructed Medicine Annex building and will feature comfortable lounge furniture, a huge flat screen TV, a commemorative wall for Dr. Dreyfus Perlas, and rows of shelves wherein plaques, trophies, medals, and other merits of the college will be proudly on display. Dean Villaruz expressed enthusiasm on the recent endowment. “We are envisioning this as a place where guests, students, and faculty can come together and have fruitful discussions. This will likewise serve as a study lounge for our students”.
VPAF Dr. Gerardo believes that this act of benevolence will be an inspiration for more donations from the kind-hearted alumni of the College of Medicine. “There is a 10-year Memorandum wherein the 1984 alumni will be the main operators of the FASAC. They will also be the ones to provide furnishings, flooring, interior design, fixtures, and construction. Once done, they will see and experience for themselves that this project is an indication of the solid relationship between the institution, their stakeholders, and the alumni”.
WVSU will be responsible of the expenses for the basic operation utilities and upkeep of the FASAC, included but not limited to the electric and water bills, janitorial services, cleaning supplies and implements, garbage disposal, and a staff that that will oversee the center’s operation.
“We are all grateful for Dr. Sanson and Batch 1984 for being thoughtful donors of this project,” declares President Sorolla, “the WVSU College of Medicine is continuously improving and achieving in terms of instruction, technology used, research, and now with the addition of this FASAC, we are looking towards a College that can further the learnings and strengthen the interactions between students, faculty, and alumni”.
