Eradicating poverty is not a task of charity, it’s an act of justice and the key to unlocking an enormous human potential. Still, nearly half of the world’s population lives in poverty, and lack of food and clean water is killing thousands every single day of the year. Together, we can feed the hungry, wipe out disease and give everyone in the world a chance to prosper and live a productive and rich life.

    WVSU PAMCO participates in Career Fair at Colegio del Sagrado Corazon de Jesus

    The West Visayas State University (WVSU) Public Affairs and Marketing Communications Office (PAMCO) took part in the Developmental Career Guidance Week Celebration 2025 of the Colegio del Sagrado Corazon de Jesus (CSCJ) from January 15-16, 2025.

    With the theme, “Vincentian Pilgrims: Navigating and Growing Careers in Hope and Prayer”, the event kicked off with a series of talks from invited guests during the Career and Vocation Campaign to Senior High School Students at the CSCJ Our Lady’s Hall during the first day.

    Jessa Temelo, information officer of PAMCO, delivered a talk that highlighted WVSU’s wide selection of academic programs, while emphasizing nursing, education, and management programs as requested by the CSCJ Guidance Center.

    In addition, the WVSU Expedited Select Track for Medicine (WEST Med) program overview and admission were also discussed, which left STEM students buzzed and encouraged to take the opportunity of a 7-year medicine program.

    On the second day, WVSU participated in the Career Exhibit, which provided an interactive experience among students and representatives of various colleges and universities present.

    Attendees who dropped by the booth were given media kits containing brochures and information about the university. Also included in the kits were tabloids and newsletters, which were generously provided by WVSU student publications such as Vital Signs Publication, SILAK Media, and The Innovator.

    The two-day event was joined by students and representatives from John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University – Molo Campus, Western Institute of Technology, University of Iloilo, University of San Agustin, Iloilo Doctors’ College, Central Philippine University, St. Therese MTC Colleges – Magdalo Site, and the host school’s college department.

    Organized by the CSCJ Guidance Center, the Career Fair aims to assist students as they navigate and nurture in their desired careers while embodying Vincentian values of integrating faith and action through lifting communities from living in poverty.

  • WVSU CAT: SANA ALL

    It’s this time of the year when WVSU conducts its College Admission Test (CAT). As early as seven in the morning, droves of examinees started to converge at the entrances of WVSU along Luna Street, causing medium-to-heavy traffic in the vicinity.

    Walking inside the campus, the examinees exuded a silent and determined aura, like gladiators stepping into an arena. For most of them, enrolling at WVSU is their first giant step toward their life-long goals. The students know: they are going through the proverbial eye of the needle. WVSU (Main Campus) will only accept 1,500+ from the 10,300+ applicants.

    The examinees came from the provinces of Aklan, Capiz, Guimaras, and other regions, including Mindanao. Walking through the corridor of Quezon Hall, the students are dead quiet, and nothing seems to exist but their test papers. Taking the test while in their zone, I could almost hear their heartbeats during that never-wracking moment.

    I observed a late student running through the campus toward the New Academic Building. He stopped for a while, took deep breaths, looked up at the sky, and made several signs of the cross before proceeding to the testing room.

    So much is at stake, especially for those parents who cannot afford to send their children to college. Such an awareness adds to the pressure of taking the CAT since making it to WVSU is a life-changing milestone. Outside the university, relatives wait patiently under the sun amidst the smoke and noise of passing vehicles.

    I saw mothers standing on the sidewalks, looking at the university buildings from a distance as if whispering prayers for their children while they took the examination. Fathers were ready to hand over their “baon” to their kids as soon as they exited the gate.

    We say “sana all” with a mixed tinge of hope, regret, and even envy when we experience social and economic disparities or personal shortcomings.

    If only the university could accept more applicants but limited resources hold it back. Yet, WVSU is never stagnant. It continues to pave a road map towards expansion so more students can benefit from its academic services.

    We can all work to create a future where fewer Filipinos are saying “sana all” because more of us are accomplishing our goals and achieving what we want in life. So, when the result of the WVSU CAT is out, I still say (not with regret) but with hope -: SANA ALL.

    WVSU, Partners Spearhead GALING-PCAARRD Kontra Covid-19 Program

    The Municipality of Sarah,  West Visayas State University,  and Panay Darag Chicken Breeders Association, Inc. (PADABA) partnered with GALING-PCAARRD Kontra Covid-19 Program “GALING” (Good Agri-Aqua Livelihood Initiatives toward NationalGoals), to support communities afflicted by Covid-19 around the country to enable communities to recover faster and become more resilient.

    Forty farmers benefited from the two-day Darag Native Chicken Production and Marketing activity conducted on September 27-28, 2022, at the Evacuation Center of the Municipality of Sara, Iloilo.

    The initiative was made possible through the collaboration of  Sara Mayor Jon Aying, WVSU – University Extension and Development Center  Director Dr. Ricky Becodo, WVSU- College of Communication Dean, Dr. Ian Espada, and PADABA President Mr. Rosendo DL Parreñas.

    The forty project participants and co-operators were chosen based on the interview conducted by the UEDC together with the Municipal Government Livelihood Assistance Division  (MGLAD) from more than sixty prospective farmer-beneficiaries in different barangays.

    Mr. Rosendo DL Parreñas, PADABA Board Member, discussed the DNC Business Opportunities, DNC Timeline, Housing Care and Management of Chickens, Feeds and Feedings, Selection, and Breeding. Dr. Helen G. Genandoy of the WVSU College of Agriculture and Fisheries (WVSU-CAF) covered chicken health, sanitation, and monitoring topics. To give the participants first-hand experience, they conducted a  field visit to the Darag farms owned by Mr. Rogelio Nice of Brgy. Malapaya and Mr. Rodel Brillantes of Brgy. Bagaygay, Sara, Iloilo in the afternoon.

    The said multiplier DNC farmers will receive four sets of Darag native chickens composed of four hens, and a rooster-set were identified based on the following criteria: (1) has attended the basic training DNC Production; (2) willing to allocate an area for ranging and has an available area for ranging DNC; (3) ready housing for DNC; (4) area is peaceful and accessible; (5) willing to invest a capital of feeds, and; (6) execute Agreement with WVSU and Sara LGU from the barangays Aguirre, Domingo, Malapaya, Ardemil, Ferraris, Latawan, Aspera, and Aposaga.

    The training started with a projection orientation and pretest by Dr. Ricky Becodo. Participants and co-operators will have a month or two to prepare their areas. MGLAD will monitor the progress of the selected farmers headed by Mr. ArgeoProquez Jr. before the distribution of the Darag Native Chicken before the end of the year.

    The Local Government Unit of the Municipality of Calinog, headed by the Municipal Mayor, Hon. Francisco “Ico” L. Calvo distributed the Php. 5,000.00 cash assistance to the seven (7) Magna Cum Laude’s namely: Mary Ann Joy D. Muyco (BSED Mathematics) , Efraem J. Celeste (BSED (Mathematics), Marvin G. Lozada (BS Entrep), Christian Kienn C. Siman (BS Entrep), Elda C. Paluyo (BS Entrep), Fredelyn B. Lorilla (BS Entrep), and Karyl D. Casiple (BSOA). This activity was conducted during the Municipal Flag Ceremony at Golden Paragon Mall, Calinog, Iloilo.

  • First Darag Chicken Trading Hub Launched

    First Darag Chicken Trading Hub Launched

    March 10, 2022 marks another milestone in the industry of Darag Native Chicken as the first Darag Chicken hub dubbed as ‘Abing’s Darag Chicken Trading’ was launched.

    Abing’s Darag Chicken Trading owner, Mrs. Mae Gerbacia (current President of Panay Darag Chicken Breeders Association/PADABA), named the hub after Dr. Bernabe Cocjin’s nickname ‘Abing.’

    Dr. Cocjin, the Darag ‘guru’ and a former President of West Visayas State University, purified the Darag stock by inbreeding them for eight generations through the support of DOST-PCAARRD (Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development).

    Abing’s Darag Chicken Trading is located at the WVSU Cooperative Complex, Corner E. Lopez – Mission Road, La Paz, Iloilo City. The hub completes the value chain of Darag production and marketing. They welcome Darag raisers and business-minded Ilongos for buying and selling transactions. They serve palatable Darag menus (lechon, tinola, fried, grilled, crispy, linabugan, inasal, timuom, etc). Moreover, they also sell dressed Darag Chicken.

    With the launching of Abing’s Darag trading hub, the stakeholders expect that Darag production and business will be extra propelled and contribute to the region’s immediate economic recovery from the pandemic.

    Important guests attended the launching spearheaded by PADABA, included Engr. Remelyn Recoter, Regional Executive Director of Department of Agriculture VI; Dr. Joselito Villaruz, WVSU President IV; Dr. Greta Gabinete, Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension; Dr. Ricky Becodo, WVSU Extension Director; Mr. Inigo D. Garingalao, Iloilo City Agriculturist; WVSU Darag Researchers and Experts (Dr. George Roxas, and Dr. Helen Genandoy); WVSU Multi-Purpose Cooperative; WESVAARRDEC; and representatives from WVSU faculty and staff. Of course, Dr. Abing Cocjin was there with individual Darag raisers from various points of Region VI.
