  • WVSU Panayana Cultural Group, Irong-Irong Dance Company Perform During ASEAN Exhibit

    ILOILO CITY–West Visayas State University (WVSU) Panayana Cultural Group and Irong-Irong Dance Company showcased the talent of Taga-West, during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Exhibit, spearheaded by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Region VI.

    The Panayana Cultural Group rendered the Opening Prayer, Philippine National Anthem, ASEAN Hymn, Iloilo City Hymn, and CHED Hymn. The Irong-Irong Dance Company performed an Indonesian cultural dance.

    The exhibit unveiled the ASEAN countries’ cultural clothing and native foods, in celebration of the association’s 55th Founding Anniversary.

    With the theme, A Showcase of ASEAN Culture and Education, colleges and universities represented the ASEAN countries, through dance and costumes.

    Central Philippine University – Philippines

    Guimaras State University – Thailand

    Iloilo Science and Technology University – Cambodia

    Iloilo State College of Fisheries – Vietnam

    University of Antique – Brunei

    The ASEAN Exhibit commenced on September 26 and concluded on September 30, at Robinsons Mall, Jaro, Iloilo City.

  • WVSU Represents Indonesia at the ASEAN 55th Founding Anniversary Exhibit

    West Visayas State University (WVSU) represents Indonesia during the week-long ASEAN Exhibit: A Showcase of ASEAN Culture and Education that started last September 26, 2022, at Robinsons Mall, Jaro, Iloilo City. 

    ASEAN, a regional body, composed of 10 member states founded in 1967, is committed to promoting intergovernmental cooperation in economic development, security, military, politics, and education. 

    CHED Region VI and Western Visayas Association of Higher Education Institutions (WVAHEI) organized the event in collaboration with WVAHEI members to celebrate the 55th Founding Anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

    Higher Education Institutions participating in the event stand-in for an ASEAN member state through booths showcasing its culture. Assigned to represent Indonesia, WVSU’s International and Local Linkages Office (ILLO) booth featured its culture through Indonesian-inspired decorations, visuals, and symbols. 

    WVSU’s Janiuay and Lambunao Campuses put their culinary skills into high gear by preparing Indonesian cuisines like Beef Rendang, Ayam Goreng, Chicken Satay, Cilor, and Klepon. Mall goers swarmed the booths for free food tasting and a closer look at the display. ILLO staff and interns manning the booth donned  Indonesian-themed outfits. 

    The ASEAN Exhibit became an opportunity for the different WVSU campuses to work as a team and contribute to the event’s success. The other units that contributed to cultural production, logistics, booth set-up, concept development, theme, design and promotion were the Dance Cultural Affairs Office, College of Business and Management, Pototan Campus, MIS, PAMCO, WVSU Artist Guild, ILLO and PAMCO interns, and the General Service Office.  

    Like in all the booths, WVSU’s corner garnered visitors for selfies, food-tasting, and small talks with staff about their “adopted” country. The ASEAN Exhibit is open to the public until September 30, 2022 at  Robinsons Mall, Jaro, Iloilo City. 

     

  • WVSU Joins the 55th ASEAN Founding Anniversary Celebration

    ILOILO CITY– In celebration of the 55th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Founding Anniversary and collaboration with the Western Visayas Association of Higher Education Institutions (WVAHEI), CHED Region VI launched the ASEAN Exhibit: A Showcase of ASEAN Culture and Education, a week-long celebration, last September 26, 2022, at Robinsons Mall Jaro, Iloilo City.

    West Visayas State University (WVSU) showcased the culture of Indonesia together with nine other private and government higher educational institutions around Panay and Guimaras, representing the ten ASEAN members.

     Various Colleges and universities exhibited the rich culture and heritage of ASEAN nations through their well-designed, thematic, and festive booths with the University of Antique representing Brunei, Iloilo Science and Technology University (Cambodia), West Visayas State University (Indonesia), Aklan State University (Laos), Capiz State University (Malaysia), Colegio de San Jose (Myanmar), Northern Iloilo State University (Singapore), Guimaras State University (Thailand), Iloilo State College of Fisheries (Vietnam), Central Philippine University (Philippines).

     Dr. Raul C. Alvarez (Regional Director, CHEDRO VI), Dr. Lilian Diana B. Parreño (Guimaras State University President), and Dr. Raul F. Muyong (Iloilo Science and Technology University and WVAHEI President) opened the exhibit with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Dr. Ma. Asuncion Christine V. Dequilla,  VP for Academic Affairs, represented WVSU in the event.

    Representatives from different colleges and universities joined the parade of flags in their respective traditional attires. The cultural group from WVSU, Panayana, sang the opening prayer, followed by their soulful renditions of the Philippine National Anthem, ASEAN Hymn, Iloilo City Hymn, and CHED Hymn.

    Dr. Raul Muyong delivered the welcome message, while  Dr. Raul C. Alvarez declared the ASEAN Exhibit open after his keynote speech. Day One of the Celebration commenced with successive cultural presentations of groups from each university and college.

    The ASEAN Exhibit is open to the public from September 26 to 30, 2022, at the Robinsons Mall, Jaro, Iloilo City.

  • WVSU Participates in the First Iloilo Transport Summit

    Student Regent Hershey Geline represented West Visayas State University (WVSU) during Iloilo City’s transport summit held at University of the Philippines Visayas Little Theater, Iloilo City Campus, last  August 30, 2022, at 7:30 A.M

    Organized by the Office of Iloilo City Councilor and Committee Chairman of Transportation, Atty. Sedfrey L. Cabaluna, the event aims to solicit concrete solutions and recommendations to resolve the issue surrounding the modification of jeepney routes implemented by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).

    The whole-day activity includes a series of presentations on the concept of the Public Vehicle Modernization Program, Local Public Transport Route Plan (LPTRP), amendments and modifications, other sectoral presentations, team workshops, and discussions in line with the Transport System in Iloilo City.

    Student Regent Hershey Geline Sumpay and WVSU USC Councilor Arlie Bosque were among the participants, and other representatives from the University of the Philippines (UPV), John B Lacson, Iloilo Science, and Technology University (ISAT U).

    At the event, Sumpay raised the issue of the lack of units of public jeepney vehicles and congestion. She also urged strengthening information dissemination to all commuters and implementing a 20% discount for students. 

    After the discussion, Bosque presented the collated recommendations of the student sector to the officers of LTFRB Region VI, Public Safety and Transportation Iloilo, Councilor Cabaluna, and all transport group representatives. One of the suggestions is implementing a coding system for private vehicles. 

    On Facebook, Arlie Bosque expressed his gratitude towards Atty. Cabaluna. “We would like to extend our gratitude to the office of Atty. Sedfrey Cabaluna for giving the students an avenue to voice our concerns on the effects of the LPTRP implementation in the city.”

    In an interview of Bombo Radyo with Councilor Atty. Cabuluna, he shared that there were over 100 attendees at the summit. Among the stakeholders are transport groups, academic institutions, commuters, and barangay officials. 

    The port Summit is led by the LPTRP Technical Working Team of Iloilo City and headed by Mr. Jeck Conlu and officials. Also present at the event are partnering agencies, namely PSTMO, Transport Cooperatives/Corporations, LTO, PNP, Provincial LGU, Media Partners, Business Sectors, Academe Sectors, Private Sectors, and participants from Bacolod City. 

  • UPDO Presents the WVSU Land Use Development and Infrastructure Plan for 2023 – 2032

    WVSU held the 3rd Stakeholders’ Consultation for its Land Use Development Infrastructure Plan (LUDIP)  at the Diversion 21 Hotel last July 29, 2022. Dr. Wilhelm P. Cerbo, Director of the University Planning and Development Office (UPDO), spearheaded the consultative meeting with stakeholders from the university, local government, and agencies.

    WVSU President Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz gave the welcome remarks while Dr. Cerbo presented an overview of the LUDIP. Among those in attendance were representatives from the Department of Budget Management, Commission on Higher Education, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Department of the Local government, Provincial Planning Council of Antique,  and municipal government representatives.

    The approval of the LUDIP is critical to the future of WVSU since it lays out the roadmap for land use and infrastructure development in the next ten years. The invited representatives from the local government units and agencies aired clarifications and provided feedback on the proposed plan presented by eight WVSU campuses.

  • WVSU explores collab with KMUTT in Thailand

    West Visayas State University continues to expand its reach in the fulfillment of its mandates in instruction, research, and extension.
     
    With its International and Local Linkages Offie (ILLO) Director Prof. Edel Subong-Csoka , VP for Research, Innovation, and Extension Dr. Greta Gallo Gabinete, campus administrators Dr. Dominador Lisao of the College of Agriculture and Forestry (CAF) and Dr. Mary Josephine Bautista (Lambunao), and CAF Internationalization focal person Prof. Rod Reynan Gallego Laspiñas, WVSU had a discussion with King Mungkot’s University Of Technology Thonburi in Thailand regarding possible collaborations between the two institutions.
     
    The WVSU delegation was welcomed by KMUTT led by Dr. Julapot Chiravachradej.
    The vision for a sustainable society is shared by both schools. #

  • Western Visayas joins SUC Fair 2022

    State universities and colleges in Western Visayas led by focal designate SUC West Visayas State University will be participating in SUC Fair 2022 from June 28 to July 1, 2022 at the SM Mall of Asia (MOA) Music Hall. The national university fair makes an exciting comeback after a two-year hiatus brought about by the pandemic. This  year’s  SUC fair will commemorate the Commission on Higher Education’s 28th anniversary as well as National Higher Education Day as a venue to recognize the invaluable contribution of stakeholders in advancing higher education, research and development and to showcase  the products and talents of SUCS from all over the country.

     

    As the center of education in the heart of the Philippines, SUCS in Western Visayas will collectively be promoting sustained excellence, unified efforts and competitive standards  through a regional bazaar product display of innovative products that will showcase the best that the region has to offer. Visayan Vignettes will also be presented through an engaging cultural show as well as exciting fair competitions.

     

    The general public as well as students, alumni, supporters and exponents of higher learning are invited to visit SUCS Fair 2022 and share experiences online through tagline #WeAreSUC. (wvsu-uedc)

  • WVSU Exudes Nostalgia, Pride and Jubilance on Its 120th Foundation Day

    West Visayas State University celebrated its 120th Foundation Day last June 16, 2022, with well-organized, simple, but meaningful events that brought them back to the past and inspired them to look into their future as one of the region’s best universities.

    Donning their white WVSU anniversary shirts, the administration led by University President Dr. Joselito Villaruz, the administration team, unit heads, and representatives from different colleges and campuses attended the Holy Mass at the Cultural Center to open the day’s festivities.

    Setting the mood for the main event, PESCAR’s Rondalla Ensemble serenaded guests with renditions of folk music as they troop inside the center. Entitled Paghanduraw, the celebration aimed to reminisce the institution’s glorious past laden with achievements, milestones, and outstanding personages who contributed to what WVSU is now.

    After the customary entrance of the colors, prayer, the singing of the national anthem, and university hymn, WVSU President Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz gave his message to the institution that has stood the test of time for 120 years. 

    “We are facing insurmountable challenges ahead and we still have much catching up to do with other advanced higher education institutions,” said Dr. Villaruz. “Yet, I am certain that together we can achieve our goals. The public expectation is high, and the deliverables are voluminous. Therefore, much is  expected from each one of us to achieve our targets. But if we work as one, we can win as one.”

    Following the inspiring speech by Dr. Villaruz, the audience watched Through the Years…A Tale Retold, a digital presentation about the history of WVSU. Guest Speaker Dr. Elnora V. Loriega, former WVSU VPAA and Dean of the College Education, held the audience in quiet awe while she expounded on her ‘testimony of valor’.

    “Imagine the endless possibilities,” she said, “of what we can achieve working together,
    facing the unknown with valor.” Regent Bonifacio Gaverza, the alumni president, gave an impassioned oral history of WVSU in Ilonggo and a rousing tribute to the university’s heritage and accomplishments, aptly titled ‘Let thy Name Resound.’ 

    Cultural dancers from the College of PESCAR performed a series of folk dances to
    pave the way for recognizing the administrators, deans, and units headed by Dr.
    Villaruz. Student representatives gave them symbolic tokens of appreciation for the
    invaluable services rendered to WVSU while they stood together, facing the audience.

    Key WVSU officials led the procession from the Cultural Center to the Quezon Hall
    grounds, where the revered urn stands guard as a symbol of the institution’s values.
    The laying of the wreath led by Dr. Villaruz capped the morning festivities with
    solemnity.

    A cultural show entitled Panakayon sustained the celebratory mood in the afternoon,
    where guests enjoyed the numbers rendered by West Crew, Panayana Cultural Group,
    and Irong-Irong Dance Company.

  • WVSU to continue singing its hymn for another 120 years – and beyond

    Today, West Visayas State University achieved a momentous milestone on its 120th founding anniversary. The foundation day affirms the commitment and resilience of its leaders, administrators, faculty, students, alumni, employees, and stakeholders through years of ups and downs.

    With humble beginnings, known then as Iloilo Normal School in 1902, the institution evolved under the leadership of capable school administrators and presidents who brought the school higher to another level during their terms.

    After becoming West Visayas State College in 1965, the institution received university status in 1986. By 1987, WVSU acquired Don Benito V. Lopez Memorial Hospital (now known as West Visayas State University Medical Center), a venue for training and learning for students in the medical and allied services. The university’s medical and nursing programs are among the best in the country, scoring consistently with a high passing rate.

    Eventually, the university grew and established external campuses in Lambunao, Calinog, Himamaylan, Janiuay, and Pototan. Graduates in other programs are equally excellent and excel in education, communications, business, arts, sciences, technology, social sciences, agriculture, sports, and culture as professionals and industry practitioners.

    The institution survived the horrors of World War II, thrived under the administration of American governors and several Philippine presidents, withstood countless natural disasters, lived through socio-political unrests, and presently weathering the challenges of the global pandemic.

    The reasons for celebrating WVSU’s 120th Founding Anniversary are as countless as the people who grew with it since 1902. Every person who became part of the institution since its founding shared a heartbeat to keep WVSU alive through their services and sacrifices.

    From a dream a university grew, / Stirring hearts with a hero’s refrain. / Out of darkness, faith renew / That our toils should not fade in vain./ West Visayas State University, Hold thy banner high, / Let genius bridge the earth / And boundless sky. 

    WVSU will continue singing its hymn for another 120 years – and beyond.
