    WVSU Celebrates BLEPT Topnotchers and Passers in First Flag Ceremony of 2025

    West Visayas State University (WVSU) honors the passers and six topnotchers of the September 2024 Board Licensure Examination for Professional Teachers (BLEPT) from the College of Education (COE) and the College of PESCAR (COP) during the first flag raising ceremony of the year.

    Dr. Ricky Magno, COE Dean, highlighted the overall passing rates of 96.4% for the elementary level and 96.77% for the secondary level, and recognized the topnotchers as the achievements of the recent BLEPT passers.

    • Emily Valderama, Bachelor of Elementary Education, placed 6th with a rate of 93%
    • Angel Nits Lopez, Bachelor of Special Needs Education (Teaching Deaf and Hard of Hearing Learners), placed 9th with a rate of 92.40%
    • Carmela Caranzo, Bachelor of Special Needs Education (Generalist), placed 10th with a rate of 92.20%
    • Mia Nicole Pedrosa, Bachelor of Special Needs Education (Generalist), placed 10th with a rate of 92.20%
    • Mark Aron Martirez, Bachelor of Science in Nursing and November 2022 Philippine Nurses Licensure Examination (PNLE) Top 6, placed 8th in the secondary level with a rate of 93%
    • Diana Grace Tubal, Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in Science and WVSU COE Summa Cum Laude, placed 8th with a rate of 93%


    In addition, Dr. Magno emphasized the passing rates of COE first-time takers with 100% for the elementary level and 99.30% for the secondary level.

    Dr. Magno also recognized COP for a remarkable overall passing rate of 100% with 23 takers, which contributed to the success of WVSU La Paz (Main Campus) as the rank 1 top performing school for the elementary level, and rank 2 top performing school for the secondary level.

    After the flag ceremony, Dr. Ma. Asuncion Christine Dequilla, Vice President for Academic Affairs, reflected on a promising new year and emphasized the vigor that everyone has for new sets of tasks to be done.

    “Basta taga-West, we always do our best in everything that we do [and] we know that we will continue to soar higher, faster, greater, and stronger,” said Dequilla.

    Dr. Peter Ernie Paris, Vice President for Administration and Finance, also expressed his gratitude to the entire WVSU community for all the initiatives from the previous year.

    “[To] more collaborations and genuine intention to sustain excellence and continued improvement, [and] may this year be peaceful and prosperous to all of you,” said Paris.

    This week’s flag raising ceremony was led by the students, faculty, and staff of the College of Communication (COC).

    Nobel University, WVSU CBM lay groundwork for future collaboration

    In a significant step toward fostering global academic cooperation, Nobel University representatives visited West Visayas State University (WVSU) on December 17, 2024, to discuss a potential partnership with the College of Business and Management (CBM). This initiative aims to enhance business education and create new opportunities for students and faculty members of both institutions.

    The delegation from Nobel University, composed of John Kim, Evangeline Quimpo, Rosemarie Diehoto, and Ilsik Byuno, was warmly welcomed by Dr. Greta G. Gabinete, Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension of WVSU. Dr. Gabinete emphasized the importance of international collaborations in elevating educational standards and fostering innovation in the field of business.

    “This visit marks a significant milestone in WVSU’s efforts to establish a global network of academic partnerships. By working together, we can broaden the horizons of our students and faculty, equipping them with the skills and perspectives needed to thrive in a competitive global landscape”, she said.

    During the meeting, Dr. Maria Corazon M. Samorin, Dean of the WVSU College of Business and Management, along with CBM faculty members, engaged in fruitful discussions with the Nobel University team. The talks revolved around potential areas of collaboration, including faculty and student exchange programs, joint research projects, curriculum development, and entrepreneurial initiatives aimed at addressing real-world challenges.

    Nobel University, known for its forward-thinking approach, is dedicated to advancing responsible business practices. Its mission focuses on providing pragmatic, entrepreneurial education that is Christian in orientation and global in scope. This vision aligns seamlessly with WVSU’s commitment to producing competent and socially responsible business leaders.

    This exploratory meeting marks the beginning of what could be a meaningful collaboration between the two institutions. Both WVSU and Nobel University expressed optimism about the potential for joint projects that would mutually benefit their students, faculty, and respective communities.

    Further discussions and planning sessions are expected to follow in the coming months as both institutions work to finalize the specifics of their partnership.

    Four WVSU graduates top November 2024 Philippine Nursing Licensure Examination

    Four graduates from the West Visayas State University (WVSU) College of Nursing (CON) ranked among the top 10 in the November 2024 Philippine Nursing Licensure Examination (PNLE).

    The CON Batch 2024, known as Batch Zephyr, showcased exceptional performance, led by Ma. Irish Silvestre, who secured Rank 8 with a score of 91%. She was followed by Robert Matthew Opong and Karen Joy Oscares, tied at Rank 9 with 90.80%, and Richard Olano, Jr., who claimed Rank 10 with 90.60%.

    As first-time takers, Batch Zephyr achieved an impressive 100% overall passing rate, with all 108 examinees successfully passing the board exam.

    WVSU once again affirmed its status as a leading nursing school, ranking first nationwide. This achievement marks the university’s fifth consecutive year as a top-performing institution in the PNLE.

    The second batch of the November PNLE was conducted on November 9 and 10 at various testing centers across the country. Results, released by the Professional Regulation Commission on November 28, showed a national passing rate of 84.99%, with 29,349 passers out of 34,534 takers.

    WVSU recognizes the College of Nursing for exemplary board performance

    West Visayas State University (WVSU) honored the four topnotchers and new board passers for the 100% passing rate of the College of Nursing (CON) Batch 2024 in the recent Philippine Nursing Licensure Examination (PNLE) during the first Monday of the month flag raising ceremony held earlier today, Dec. 2, 2024.

    This performance also marked the fifth consecutive year of the University being a top performing nursing school.

    Dr. Madonna Palmes, CON dean, invited the CON faculty and staff to be recognized by the WVSU community, while Prof. Aj Khaner Rendaje, CON faculty member, introduced CON Batch 2024, also known as Batch Zephyr.

    The four topnotchers who were acknowledged are the following: Ma. Irish Silvestre – Rank 8 (91%), Robert Matthew Opong – Rank 9 (90.80%), Karen Joy Oscares – Rank 9 (90.80%) and Richard Olano, Jr. – Rank 10 (90.60%).

    Dr. Joselito Villaruz, WVSU President, recalled in his speech that Batch Zephyr was the batch of first year nursing students when he became the university’s president.

    “[This batch is] the crowning moment for my administration,” added Pres. Villaruz.

    Aside from his pride and gratitude on this remarkable feat, Pres. Villaruz also expressed his only request to Batch 2024 in relation to giving back to the university.

    “My only prayer [perhaps] is some of you might stay a little longer in the Philippines to serve our countrymen. In fact, this has been a call of everyone from all sectors for you, our graduates, to help narrow the gap in meeting our healthcare needs,” said Pres. Villaruz.

    Dr. Celina Gellada, Medical and Allied Sciences VP, also encouraged Batch Zephyr to give back to the university, especially for those with the passion to teach or take their master’s degree in the College of Nursing graduate program.

    “This is a product not only of your hard work, dedication, and persistence, but also [that] of the faculty and staff,” said Dr. Gellada.

    Ma. Irish Silvestre, PNLE topnotcher at rank 8th with a 91% passing rate, expressed her appreciation to the entire WVSU community for the unwavering support and guidance throughout their entire nursing school journey.

    “You accepted us like baby birds, and let us go like full grown eagles ready to fly. We are beyond grateful of all your service, support, belief, and prayers,” said Silvestre.

    Silvestre also highlighted the challenges that her batch underwent, such as having limited practical applications due to an online learning set-up for two years brought about by the pandemic. Nevertheless, she spoke of emerging as competitive nurses despite these limitations.

    “WVSU CON, we [Batch Zephyr] can attest that truly you are living the mission of making world-class nurses. We are so privileged to bring back the honor to you and to live up to the tradition of excellence,” concluded Silvestre.

    The WVSU CON clinched the top spot among nursing schools in the country with a 100% passing rate in the PNLE.

    The Professional Regulation Commission released the November 2024 PNLE results last Nov. 28 with 29,349 passers out of 34,534 takers and an 84.99% national passing rate.

    WVSU Office of Student Affairs benchmarks best practices at PNU, UP Diliman, and Ateneo

    The Office of Student Affairs (OSA) of West Visayas State University (WVSU) conducted a series of benchmarking visits to the Philippine Normal University (PNU), the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD), and Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) from November 13 to 15, 2024. These visits aimed to explore innovative strategies and best practices to enhance WVSU’s student services.

    Led by OSA Dean Dr. Ma. Pilar Charmaine Malata, the delegation included key OSA personnel: University Guidance Counselor Maybelle de la Gente, University Psychometrician Windy de la Cruz, Career and Job Placement Coordinator Ludylie Buendia, Scholarship Coordinator Sarah Jane Dequito, OIC Dormitory Manager Marilou Bibanco, Communications Staff Nelly Gallego, and Student Affairs Staff Jhena Mae Berlin.

    The team engaged in discussions with officials and toured student affairs offices at PNU, UPD, and AdMU, gathering insights to guide significant improvements at WVSU. Key projects include the enhancement of the WVSU Student Center, updates to the WVSU Student Handbook, and the establishment of Peer Support Services.

    Dr. Malata emphasized the importance of expanding the OSA workforce, highlighting the need for additional plantilla positions to hire more guidance counselors and psychometricians. With continued support from WVSU’s top management, OSA envisions creating a vibrant hub to empower students academically, personally, and socially.

    The WVSU-OSA Team would like to extend their sincere gratitude to PNU officials led by Vice President for Student Success and Stakeholders Services, Dr. Denmark Yonson; UPD Officials led by the OIC of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, Dr. Jay-ar Igno; and AdMU Officials led by Vice President for Higher Education, Dr. Maria Luz Vilches.

    Special thanks to Dr. Bryan Dayuta (Director of PNU Linkages and International Office), Dr. Jayeel Cornelio (Director of DOST Science Education Institute), Sir Michael Avelino of UPD Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, Dr. Leland Joseph Dela Cruz (AdMU Assistant Vice President for Social and Environment Engagement for Development and Sustainability), Ms. Karen Sunico (AdMU Director of Partnerships and Engagement) for coordinating the schedules of WVSU-OSA’s benchmarking visits.

    The insights gained from these exchanges are expected to play a crucial role in shaping the future of student services at WVSU.

    WVSU agriculture graduates among November 2024 Agriculturist Licensure Exam passers

    Graduates from the College of Agriculture and Forestry (CAF) at West Visayas State University (WVSU) and its Calinog Campus have been recognized as successful passers in the November 2024 Agriculturist Licensure Examination (ALE).

    The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) released the ALE results on November 22, 2024. Initially, WVSU CAF was reported to have 28 passers out of 56 takers, while the WVSU Main Campus had eight passers out of 12 takers. However, the CAF Office of the Administrator later verified that the passers attributed to the Main Campus were also from WVSU CAF, as the Main Campus does not offer a degree in Agriculture.

    With the revised figures, WVSU CAF achieved a 52.94% passing rate, with 36 passers out of 68 takers. Meanwhile, WVSU Calinog Campus recorded a 50% passing rate among first-time takers, with four passers out of eight examinees.

    The November 2024 ALE, conducted in 18 testing centers nationwide, recorded 3,628 passers out of 7,144 examinees, yielding a national passing rate of 50.78%.

    WVSU to receive prestigious International Ranking Awards at the CHED ICONS; recipient for three years in a row

    West Visayas State University (WVSU) with its stride in the World University Rankings for Innovation (WURI) will be recognized once again in the prestigious Commission on Higher Education’s Internationalization Champions of Nation-Building and Sustainability (ICONS) Awards, set on October 25, 2024 at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City.

    The ICONS Awards is a significant platform that celebrates the achievements of higher education institutions for demonstrating excellence in international rankings (QS, THE, and WURI), successfully undergoing the AUN QA Institutional Assessment, and attaining the status of AUN QA Associate Member Universities in 2024.

    In 2023, it can be recalled that WVSU broke into the stringent WURI, earning spots in Global Top Innovative Universities (Top 201-300). Having also been recognized for the latter in 2022, gaining three stars in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS).

    WVSU has consistently advanced its performance and visibility in global rankings that measure academic reputation, research and innovation, impact and social values, sustainability and development, and international engagement.

    The said award is bestowed to WVSU for championing the global reputation through its commendable performance in international rankings and ratings, trailblazing efforts to advance internationalization, and innovative initiatives to contribute to the country’s economic and societal goals.

    WVSU ILLO concludes three-part DagYoung sessions; propels university’s branding initiatives

    West Visayas State University (WVSU) International and Local Linkages Office (ILLO) concluded its three-part DagYoung Sessions activity with the topic, Pitching the Institution, via Google Meet, on October 20, 2024, seeking to integrate student ambassadors with concepts in pitching WVSU and build a brand identity around it.

    Professor Edel Carmela Subong-Csoka, Director of ILLO, emphasized that setting up a series of workshops is not only to teach practical skills but also to inspire and empower student ambassadors for strategic growth.

    During the workshop, resource speaker, Mr. Daryl Lasafin, Head of Operations, Dame Digital, highlighted the importance of branding in the University’s marketing plan, especially if that institution is not particularly well-known. Creating a solid identity is the best way to draw more partnerships on a global scale as it helps promote distinctiveness that sets an institution apart from others.

    He started the discussion by outlining WVSU’s particular strengths and focusing on what exactly makes it unique. Student ambassadors must begin with gaining a clear understanding of the University’s vision, mission, and core values.

    Additionally, he underpinned the branding story framework which pinpoints three specific components: purpose, drive, and culture. These foundational elements served as the guiding principles for branding decisions. Knowing who you are, what you stand for, and who you aim to reach is essential in creating a brand that resonates.

    Through these discussions, student ambassadors were reminded of how they can be ‘game changers’, especially with the kind of influence that comes being a branding arm of the university.

    After the discussion, a forum session took place and participants posed questions as well as comments to the speaker.

    The DagYoung Sessions was conceptualized by the ILLO in an effort to provide student ambassadors with skills necessary for the future and prepare them to become global citizens at the forefront of international education in the years to come.

    WVSU strategizes toward Internationalization

    In line with its commitment to academic excellence and its vision to be a globally-recognized institution of learning, West Visayas State University (WVSU) International and Local Linkages Office conducted a collaborative training workshop on ASEAN Citizenship Goals: The WVSU IZN Retooling for Top Management and Staff-Role on Prioritizing IZN Mandates and the importance of IZN in the Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) on Oct. 11, 2024.

    Participants, hailing from diverse educational, administrative units, key officials, Deans, IZN Coordinators and staff of WVSU engaged in discussions and practical exercises.

    In her opening remarks, Prof. Edel Carmela Subong-Csoka, Director, WVSU International and Local Linkages Office emphasized the need to further accelerate the IZN program and harmonize initiatives.

    “There is no stopping us for the WVSU Internationalization is fighting for its place, first and foremost, in southeast Asia. For WVSU, being part of the ASEAN framework provides opportunities for exchanges, collaborations, and access to resources that enhance academic experience. Thus, the top management and the key personnel who have the power in implementing the strategic plans are called to this challenge,” Prof. Edel said.

    Under the guidance of esteemed resource speaker, Prof. Bryan Dayuta, Philippine Normal University’s Director of International Affairs and Linkages, the participants were shared with knowledge on concepts, legal bases, and university pathways crucial for facilitating internationalization within higher education institutions. He first expounded the concept of internationalization, lifting from the CMO No. 55, s. 2016; the importance of internationalization globally, nationally, and institutionally; and the positioning of internationalization.

    The event served as an avenue for participants to critically examine their IZN plans, and through the constructive feedback from the resource speaker, they were able to refine and improve their strategies in alignment with the colleges’ and campuses’ goals, contributing to the overall success of the internationalization program at WVSU.

    Furthermore Prof. Bryan also underlined the structure and functions of International Relations Office, and elucidated guidelines for initiating international programs.

    Additionally, attendees gained insights into policies, strategies, and quality assurance initiatives tailored to internationalization efforts.

    The insights and strategies discussed during the seminar are set to significantly enhance WVSU’s global competencies and key directions for the current academic year and finalize WVSU’s Strategic Development Plan for 2026-2030.

    WVSU, Nat’l Archives of the Philippines collaborate for training on Basic Records and Archives Management

    The West Visayas State University (WVSU), through its Administrative Division, successfully conducted a two-day Basic Records and Archives Management (BRAM) seminar-workshop on September 26-27, 2024, at District 21 Hotel, Iloilo City.

    Representatives from the National Archives of the Philippines (NAP) served as resource persons for the training, which was attended by WVSU records officers, document controllers and records custodian from both the main and satellite campuses.

    The NAP, the nation’s repository of archival and historical collections, mandated to plan and enforce policies for effective records management.

    Mr. Kit P. Toling, NAP Supervising Records Management Analyst, covered topics such as the National Archives of the Philippines Act of 2007 (RA 9470) and the Records and Archives Management Program (RAMP). Participants learned about key concepts of records creation, maintenance, and control, along with practical applications like the Functional Subject Alphabetic Classification System (FSACS).

    On the second day, Mr. Jhonley Joseph L. Item, NAP Records Management Analyst I, discussed records disposition, its values, retention periods, and proper handling and disposal through an efficient Records Disposition Program (RDP). Participants also learned how to complete essential forms like Records Inventory and Appraisal, Records Disposition Schedule, and the Request for Authority to Dispose Records.

    The training concluded with Toling’s discussion on establishing a physical and organizational Records and Archives Center Administration and emphasizing the importance of records custodians in safeguarding public records.
