  • Simulation and Experiential Learning Workshop in WVSU ends; capacitates health educators

    The West Visayas State University in collaboration with UP Manila and MSU-General Santos through a grant from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) LAKAS Project “Optimising Simulation-based Education (SBE), Training, Collaboration and Research – A Focus on Technology-driven Teaching & Learning Strategies” held a five-day Simulation and Experiential Learning Workshop here at WVSU. It concluded at the College of Medicine on September 8, 2023.

    The International Center for AIDS Care and Treatment Programs (ICAP) at Columbia University facilitated the conduct of the activity, during which they organized a series of lectures, scenarios, and workshops on integrating SBE to the curriculum.

    On behalf of WVSU University President Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz, Dr. Celina Gellada, Vice President of Medical and Allied Sciences, expressed her gratitude to the facilitators and all the Higher Educational Institutions that participated in the event.

    “When you return to your respective universities and colleges, you should also share what you have learned here with your colleagues, students, and other stakeholders that SBE will helps ensure student and patient safety” said Dr. Gellada.

    A total of six HEIs from different regions took part in the learning workshop: Cebu Normal University (CNU), Northern Negros State College of Science and Technology (NONESCOST), Mindanao State University (MSU) – Gensan, Central Philippine University (CPU), University of Southern Mindanao (USM), and West Visayas State University (WVSU).

  • HAPPENING NOW: Simulation and Experiential Learning Workshop in WVSU to ‘revolutionize’ health education

    In a collaboration aimed at ‘revolutionizing’ health education, a national Simulation and Experiential Learning Workshop is taking place today, September 4, 2023, and will conclude on September 8, 2023, at the Auditorium of Roxas Hall, College of Medicine.

    This workshop has been made possible through the partnership of ICAP Global Health, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), the University of the Philippines – Manila, Mindanao State University – General Santos (MSU-GenSan), and WVSU.

    The primary focus of the workshop is Simulation-Based Education (SBE), utilizing cutting-edge teaching methodology that incorporates technology and experiential learning to offer safe yet immersive clinical encounters for students, educators, and prospective patients.

    The program, which commenced at 9 a.m. today, is being attended by 35 faculty members from other public and private institutions, including MSU-GenSan, University of Southern Mindanao, Central Philippine University, Iloilo Doctors College, Cebu Normal University, and Northern Negros State College of Science and Technology. Additionally, faculty members from WVSU’s College of Medicine, College of Nursing, and College of Dentistry are participating.

    The facilitators from ICAP at Columbia University include Dr. Getch Kassa, senior staff associate; Ms. Claire Raether, senior training and education specialist; Ms. Heather Fosburg, senior project officer; and Dr. Susan Michaels-Strasser, senior director of Human Resources for Health. Joining them is Dr. Pule Moabi, principal and simulation specialist from Scott College of Nursing in Lesotho.

    According to its website, ICAP, based at Columbia University, “has operations in more than 40 countries and is a leader in global public health, internationally known for tackling the world’s toughest health challenges—from HIV to tuberculosis, from malaria to maternal and child health, and the growing problem of non-communicable diseases, and most recently, the COVID-19 pandemic. Through innovative research, collaborative technical assistance, and a focus on strengthening health systems, ICAP helps to create better, more accessible health services to reduce the burden of illness on people and communities.”

    SBE has garnered attention for its potential to offer hands-on training devoid of the inherent risks associated with real-life medical situations, a factor that is crucial in producing highly competent and confident healthcare professionals.

    The “Simulation and Experiential Learning Workshop” project comprises a series of workshops designed to equip the present and future healthcare workforce with the skills needed to effectively address diverse patient needs. By integrating Competency-Based Education (CBE) and high-fidelity simulators (HFS), the project aims to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and practical implementation.

  • WVSU Socio-Behavioral Science Research Ethics Review Committee,now PHREB Level 1 Accredited

    The WVSU Socio-Behavioral Science Research Ethics Review Committee (SBSRERC) is granted Level 1 accreditation by Philippine Health Research Ethics Board Committee on Standards and Accreditation (PHREB CSA), effective June 30, 2023-December 29, 2023. During this period, the SBSRERC shall comply with the 2020 PHREB Policies and Requirements for Accreditation of Research Ethics Committee and the National Ethical Guidelines for Research Involving Human Participants (NEGRIHP).

    Dr. Hilda C. Montaño serves as the REC Chair and Dr. Venus Papilota-Diaz is the REC Member Secretary. Both serve as panel chairs in two of the five panels in SBSRERC, while Dr. Jeannemar Genevive Y. Figueras, Dr. Catherine O. Roces, and Dr. Ma. Pilar S. Malata serve in the other three panels. Each panel is composed of institutional and non-institutional members coming from various fields of socio-behavioral sciences.

    As per Memorandum No. 22-268, the Committee is given the authority to operate as an independent body to review socio-behavioral science research protocols of students, faculty, staff, and other researchers within and outside the University. It approves and disapproves protocols, and requires modifications to protocols and related documents. Most importantly, it has the responsibility to protect the rights, safety, and well-being of human participants involved in socio-behavioral science research and to provide public assurance of such protection.

  • Simulation-based education seen to up-skill med, nursing, dentistry faculty and students

    The post-pandemic times and the new normal has made the medical field and its educational system take strategic steps in being responsive to the needs of the field.
    This includes the up-skilling of faculty and students, which in the case of the West Visayas State University Colleges of Medicine, Nursing and Dentistry -means collaboration with institutional partners here and overseas.
    Thus, the conduct of the “Simulation-Based Education Faculty Development” on July 17, 2023 at the COM’s Roxas Hall Auditorium from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    Simulation-based medical education refers to any educational endeavor that employs simulation tools to recreate clinical situations.
    A partnership between the WVSU, University of the Philippines Manila and Mindanao State University-General Santos through the CHED LAKAS 2022-001 “Optimising Simulation-based Education (SBE), Training, Collaboration and Research – A Focus on Technology-driven Teaching and Learning Strategies” paved the way for this program which highlights the commitment of these institutions to providing cutting-edge technology in the field of health care.
    The facilitators are all from Adelaide Health Simulation. They are Adam Montagu, director; Ellen Davies, research program lead; and Michael Gilmour, simulation technician.
    The activities and workshops include a team-based scenario, how to break bad news, Visually Enhanced Medical Simulation (VEMS), and a panel discussion.
    The participants numbering 57 are faculty from the WVSU Colleges of Medicine, Nursing & Dentistry, UP Manila, Cebu Normal University, Northern Negros State College of Science and Technology, Mindanao State University- General Santos, University of Southern Mindanao, Iloilo Doctors’ College and Central Philippine University.

  • WVSU joins Ge4 Summit 2023, focusing on AI transforming Higher Education

  • THAT’S A FIRST: WVSU-CON participates in first ADPCN Region VI Research Assembly

    Spearheaded by the Association of Deans of Philippine Colleges of Nursing, Inc. Region 6 in partnership with host school, the University of San Agustin, the research assembly commences with the theme, “Nurses Leading Change and Advancing Practice through Research” at the University of San Agustin, Iloilo City on May 22, 2023, 8:00 AM – 3:30 PM.

    University President of USA-Iloilo, Rev. Fr. Frederick C. Comedador, expresses his whole out support for the activity and his gratitude to the various college deans and clinical instructors in the region.

    “You’re gathering [research assembly] today is a manifestation of your desire to maintain the quality of our nursing education, if not to further improve what we have right now.”, he added

    ADPCN VI, President, Dean Aris Kendell R. Bongabong shares his words of welcome and officially starts the event, “I am honored to stand before you representing a collective of 20 nursing institutions committed to shaping the future of our profession. This assembly provides a platform to showcase the immense contributions nurses make in leading change and advancing practice through research.”

    The opening ceremony was headlined by a discussion on research ethics by the Chairperson, Research Ethics Review of USA-Iloilo, Dr. Ma. Cecilia D. Alimen. She highlighted the importance of a proper informed consent form, the rationale behind the need for an ethics approval, as well as determining the several ethical considerations in conducting research.

    The oral and video presentations were the first to step into the spotlight, followed by the poster presentations in the afternoon session.

  • 1st Western Visayas peace ed research forum preps grad students for peace ed studies

    Establishing itself as a home for peace education research and innovation in Region VI, the West Visayas State University – College of Education (WVSU-COE) hosted the 1st West Visayas Peace Education Research Forum on May 20, 2023, at the Center of Teaching Excellence Main Hall.

    With the theme, “Celebrating SDG #16 Peace, Justice, & Strong Institutions,” the University’s Center of Peace Education (CPE) led by Dr. Rejie F. Palmos and Mentoring the Mentors Program convened peace education advocates and researchers of the region with the aim of inspiring COE graduate students and extension teachers to have a peace education agenda in their research and prepare them for graduate research or field and community work.

    “We are so happy that, hopefully, we can take you on for a commitment to see the peace education agenda — whether you work in Math, Science, Language, Policy, Administration, etcetera — because that’s the kind of dignified, humane world we want to live in,” said Donne Jone Sodusta, award-winning alumni of the WVSU-COE in the field of multicultural education research in Taiwan.

    Furthermore, this regional forum enlightened master’s degree students taking up the Peace Education elective course on strategies for integrating peace education into their subject areas of specialization through examples shared by peace education research trailblazers of the region coming from universities and schools in Iloilo, Aklan, and Antique, including studies conducted by the COE’s own Dr. Myra Angelie Oliveros and Dr. Verna Jade Janay.

    “Most of us are inspired sa mga research studies nila so maybe after this, I will self-reflect on how can I do it myself, kay kung hindi man man siya subong nga Master’s, maybe [I will pursue peace resaerch] someday and sa school man or sa workplace,” said Jollina M. Mateo, a Master of Arts in Education (MAEd) Major in Mathematics student who participated in the forum.

    Pursuant to the Commission of Higher Education (CHED) mandate to integrate peace studies and education in higher education institutions, this is the first regional conference on peace education that highlights the research aspect of the program.

    “I hope that CHED recognizes the efforts of West, making it a Regional Center for Peace Education. Through this activity, I hope that you will be able to lay down the foundations and set directions for peace research in our education curriculum,” said Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz, WVSU president, in his message during the program.

    The day-long activity also featured a peace art exhibit that spotlighted the works of Dante Masculino, a teacher, painter, and student of MAEd Major in Language Teaching from Dingle, Iloilo.

     

  • Philippine-European collaboration concludes at WVSU today

    ILOILO City — The Final Dissemination and Send-off of Project FORTH, a collaboration between Philippine and European universities that aims to empower teachers in challenged areas in the Philippines, concludes today, March 27, 2023, at the Cultural Center and Teleconference Room of the West Visayas State University (WVSU). This event is the second to the last leg of the project.

    Project FORTH was launched in WVSU in February 2019 and Iloilo was one of the pilot areas. It succeeded in obtaining the approval of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) in 2020 for the offering of the degree Master of Teaching in Challenged Areas (MAEd TCA) which is now available at WVSU, the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) in Manila, and the University of St. La Salle (USLS) in Bacolod City.

    Today’s activities, which start at 8:30 a.m., will involve the WVSU College of Education students as the audience. The program will include a Walkthrough of Project FORTH, a presentation of the impact of Project FORTH in Philippine Higher Education, and speeches by two principals and a student who have taken up MAEd Teaching in Challenged Areas. They will talk about the Imprints of Project FORTH in

    Philippine Higher Education. WVSU President Joselito Villaruz will also deliver a speech entitled “Ways Forward for WVSU.”

    The European partner institutions will share their experiences with their Philippine counterparts, and Project FORTH Designer Julia Gonzales will speak on “Changing the Narrative: Project FORTH Vision and Beyond.”

    The second part of the Final Dissemination and Send-off will take place at the Teleconference Room of the WVSU, where the participants will share their experiences of DepEd and University Partners. They will also discuss the outputs of FORTH, such as infusion in the Bachelor of Arts Program, majoring in Teaching in Challenged Areas, and materials developed and publications.

    The afternoon session will feature European and WVSU partners speaking on Project FORTH and Beyond,

    FORTH’s impact, and “Visioning the Association for Teacher Educators and Teachers in Challenged Areas.” The program will end at 3 p.m., after which the Project FORTH Team will proceed to Davao City for the last leg of the Final Dissemination and Send-off.

    On March 23, 2023, implementers, representatives of partner schools, officials of the Department of Education and CHED gathered for the formal send-off at the Savoy Hotel in Pasay City. A series of activities followed, including visits on March 24 to Centro Escolar University and PUP and their Manila partner schools and communities, March 25 in USLS Bacolod, March 26 at an Aeta community in Don Salvador Benedicto in Negros Occidental, March 27 in WVSU, and March 28 and 29 in USeP Davao and its partner community for a project called “Education behind bars.”

  • PH-EU collab helping teachers in challenged areas close to good reviews

    PASAY City – A major collaboration between Philippine and European universities ended on a positive note with good reviews given its various successes on March 23, 2023 at the Savoy Hotel here.

    The 4-year collaboration is Project FORTH (Formation of Teachers in Challenged Areas) which seeks to empower teachers who are working in challenging areas and contexts that are out of the ordinary.

    A major achievement of the said Project is the approval of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) in 2020 for the offering of the degree Master of Teaching in Challenged Areas (MAEd TCA) in the following universities: In Manila – the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP); and in Western Visayas – University of St. La Salle (USLS) and West Visayas State University (WVSU).

    In his speech, WVSU President Joselito Villaruz said, “Project Forth has widened the horizon of what higher institutions stand for and that is to give impetus to the sector that has been left behind so that the gains of development shall be shared to the marginalized sector of this society.”

    Also present at the Send Off were representatives of the three European universities leading in educational reform and international organizations in Europe. They are the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, University of Deusto in Bilbao, Spain, and the University of Bologna in Bologna, Italy together with the following institutions: Education for an Interdependent World in Brussels, Belgium which is the project co-coordinator and Fundacion Intered in Madrid, Spain that coordinates NGOs’ development work in different parts of the world.

    The Final Dissemination and Send Off lasts until March 29, 2023 with key implementers and module coordinators visiting partner schools and communities on the following dates: March 24 in CEU and PUP and their Manila partner schools and communities highlighting their outputs as program in-charge, March 25 in USLS Bacolod, March 26 at an Aeta community in Don Salvador Benedicto in Negros Occidental, March 27 in WVSU, March 28 and 29 in USeP Davao and its partner community for a project called “Education behind bars.”

    Discussed in the March 23 Send Off were the project’s outputs, the impact of the FORTH partnership with Europe, the envisioning of the project’s future, the Department of Education’s experiences with the participating universities, outreach to the other universities, and “visioning” the Association for Teacher Educators and Teachers in Challenged Areas.

  • WVSU Hosts Futures Thinking Seminar-Workshop

    The West Visayas State University hosted the 2nd Futures Thinking Seminar-Workshop last February 17, 2023, at the Diversion 21 Hotel,Iloilo City.

    Aklan State University, Capiz State University, Carlos Hilado Memorial State University, Central Philippines State University, Guimaras State University, Iloilo Science and Technology University, Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology, Northern Iloilo State University, Northern Negros State College of Science and Technology, University of Antique and West Visayas State University participated in the high-level workshop represented by their university presidents and vice presidents.

    WVSU President Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz welcomed the participants in his address, while Dr. Raul F. Muyong gave a message afterward. Mr. Emmanuel De Guia, Director of Strategic Partnerships and Networking PhilsFutures, provided an overview of the activity and expected output, together with Ms. Jalaine Joyce Malabanan, PhilFutures Chief.

    The seminar-workshop aims to produce capstone projects on each institution’s research niche anchored in the Sustainable Development Goals and regional development priorities. Participating HEIs in the region came together to identify an emerging Futures Agenda, mainly geared towards institutional capstone projects.

    Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz presented WVSU’s capstone project entitled “Mental Wellness for Resilient Filipinos,” a research-based initiative to institutionalize solutions to mental wellness in the region. The presentation identified the problem, competitive landscape, solutions, framework, work plan, timeline, and key metrics.

    Participants came up with recommendations to sustain the Futures Agenda and ensure the implementation of their action plan. Building a “Futures Thinking culture” through the facilitation of seminars among faculty, research enthusiasts, and students; and enhancement of middle managers’ skills in risk management and governance are among the recommended action points agreed upon by the participants.
