A. Objectives:
- To apply acquired theoretical knowledge in the promotion of health, prevention and management of common diseases under supervision of the residents and faculty.
- To gain exposure and opportunity to interact harmoniously with patients as well as with the other members of the health team in the outpatient department, charity and pay wards, emergency room, operating room, specialty clinics and community-based centers.
- To acquire proficiency in the recognition of abnormal conditions from the normal, the life threatening from the non-critical and in the application of procedures and medications in cases of medical and surgical emergencies.
- To demonstrate at all times values and attitudes becoming of a physician who is sensitive and responsive to human needs and rights.
B. Program Description
The interns will rotate in various departments for a total of 12 months. Major areas of rotation (10 months) will include Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Surgery, Obstetrics-Gynecology and Community Medicine pursuant to the goals of the program to produce physicians who are proficient in the general practice of medicine consonant with the demands of medical practice in the Philippines as primary physician. The rest (2 months) will be spent on an elective wherein the intern will be able to choose to rotate in minor departments like anesthesia, orthopedics, pathology, psychiatry, radiology and rehab medicine. This is in recognition of the desire of some intern for further development beyond the primary level of health care.
During rotation the interns will have a chance to apply their acquired theoretical knowledge in the promotion of health, prevention and management of common diseases under the supervision of the faculty. Patient-intern interactions shall be in the out-patient clinics, the emergency room, the charity and pay wards, operating rooms, and in community based centers. Emphasis is on recognition of abnormal conditions from the normal, the life threatening from the non-critical, the application of procedures and medications to sustain life until higher level expertise could be availed of, and the demonstration of holistic values and attitudes in the clinical setting.
