WVSU Prepares for the 2022 World Research and Innovation Festival

WVSU is preparing vigorously for the forthcoming World Research and Innovation Festival (WRIF), a virtual global research conference from October 17 to 19, 2022. Being a hub of creative works and innovative ideas, the university takes on the challenge of gathering 600 participants from various colleges and universities worldwide for the research festival.

Dr. Greta G. Gabinete, Vice President for Research Extension and Training, heads the WRIF Organizing Committee. The preparation requires the collaboration of almost all the units and departments of the university.

With an apt theme “Connecting the Global Community Through Research”, WVSU aims to create a productive and fruitful event where global researchers and innovators can share their ideas and new-found knowledge in their respective fields. 

“The World Research and Innovation Festival is an opportunity for the different units in  WVSU to work together and bring out the innovative ideas from global researchers,” Dr. Gabinete said.

According to the WRIF website, the festival is a  multi- and inter-disciplinary conference that provides a venue for local and international researchers to disseminate and exchange ideas on the latest trends and advances in research and innovation. Areas of interest are education, social sciences, pure and applied sciences, medical, health and allied sciences, business, tourism, and hospitality management.

International experts and academic leaders, as well as outstanding WVSU alums spread around the world, will serve as keynote and plenary speakers during the research festival,

WVSU Sends Delegation to PASUC Midterm Convention

A contingent from West Visayas State University attended the 2022 Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC) Midterm Convention at the SMX Convention Center, Pasay City from July 27-29. The event also celebrated PASUC’s 55th Founding Anniversary.

The Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC) is an association established to strengthen academic advancement and maximize institutions’ potential to thrive in an ever-changing, inter-connected, and diverse world.

Around 600 representatives from various universities and colleges, government offices, partner agencies, and local and international stakeholders attended the convention with the theme “SUCs as Innovation Leader for Global Competitiveness”. 

Convention delegates from West Visayas State University included University President Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz, Dr. Celina G. Gellada (Vice-President for Medical and Allied Sciences), Dr. Greta G. Gabinete (Vice-President for Research, Innovation and Extension), and Dr. Proferio J. Barlas Jr. (Vice-President for Administration and Finance).

UPDO Presents the WVSU Land Use Development and Infrastructure Plan for 2023 – 2032

WVSU held the 3rd Stakeholders’ Consultation for its Land Use Development Infrastructure Plan (LUDIP)  at the Diversion 21 Hotel last July 29, 2022. Dr. Wilhelm P. Cerbo, Director of the University Planning and Development Office (UPDO), spearheaded the consultative meeting with stakeholders from the university, local government, and agencies.

WVSU President Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz gave the welcome remarks while Dr. Cerbo presented an overview of the LUDIP. Among those in attendance were representatives from the Department of Budget Management, Commission on Higher Education, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Department of the Local government, Provincial Planning Council of Antique,  and municipal government representatives.

The approval of the LUDIP is critical to the future of WVSU since it lays out the roadmap for land use and infrastructure development in the next ten years. The invited representatives from the local government units and agencies aired clarifications and provided feedback on the proposed plan presented by eight WVSU campuses.

WVSU Hosts CHED Writeshop and FGD Participants

The West Visayas State University (WVSU) participated in the writeshop and focus group discussions (FGD) commissioned by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) entitled “Patterns of and Pathways to Transformation in Philippine TEIs: The Role of Institutional Leadership in Focus.” The event was held at Richmond Hotel, Iloilo City, from July 27 to 29. 

CHED’s three-part scoping study intends to describe the role of leadership in producing teacher quality through gathering narratives from the selected institutions. Participants aim to create a framework for designing and delivering more opportunities to drive the responsiveness of teacher education.

Dr. Ma. Asuncion Christine Dequilla, WVSU Vice President for Academic Affairs, opened the event with a welcome address, followed by the self-introduction of the participating delegates.

CHED   selected  university representatives  for the data gathering on Teacher Education Institutions (TEIs).  The participants include West Visayas State University,, Mariano State University, Saint Louis University, Marikina Polytechnic College, Thomas Claudio Colleges, University of Makati, Adventist University, University of San Jose Recoletos, Bago City College, Holy Name University, Southern Leyte State University, Hercor College, Bukidnon State University, Capitol University, St. Benedict College of Cotabato, MSU-GenSan, Davao De Oro State College and St. John Paul College Davao.

Dr. Roberto Sagge Jr., WVSU Director of the University Learning and Assessment Center, gave a brief overview of the workshop and FGD, followed by an orientation by Dr. Edison Fermin, Co-Chair Person and Technical Panel for Teacher Education.

 WVSU provided a city tour around Iloilo and gave the guests a rousing welcome upon campus arrival. Cultural dancers of the Cultural Arts Office and PESCAR performed lively dance numbers as the guests walked into the lobby. University administrators led by Dr. Dequilla hosted a dinner for the guests at the campus.

Day Two highlighted the plenary briefing workshop (by cluster) and sharing of writing experiences, while the last day focused on the refinement of cases, submission of the draft and institutional cases, and the distribution of certificates.

WVSU Attends SEAOHUN Strategic Planning Workshop

West Visayas State University attended the South East Asia One Health Network (SEAOHUN) strategic planning workshop at the function room of Microtel Hotel in Pasay City last July 4 and 5, 2022. Represented by Dr. Celina C. Gellada, Vice President for Medical and Allied Sciences, and Dr. Maria Kristina Gonzalez-Almonte, College of Medicine Faculty, the university is expected to take an active role in supporting the advocacy of  SEAOHUN.

WVSU is a Philippine One Health Network member, part of the  Southeast Asia One Health University Network (SEAOHUN). According to their website, PhilOHUN and the entire SEAOHUN aspires for a future with minimal threat from preventable diseases through the One Health approach. They believe that joining hands with their neighboring Southeast Asian countries will allow us to move a step closer to this goal.

SEAOHUN’s Dr. Vipat Kuruchittham (Executive Director) and Ms. Gabrielle Iglesias (Senior Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Officer) served as speakers while Professor Benjamin Sandoval facilitated the strategic planning workshop. As the funding organization of SEAOHUN, Chevron Corporation was represented by Ms. Dee Bourbon, Mr. Joel Gaviola and Ms. Analyn Caindoy.

The workshop’s objective is to produce a five-year strategic plan to strengthen PhilOHUN’s identity as a One Health-centered organization in the Philippines. In attendance to the two-day workshop were representatives from member universities  Central Luzon State University, Partido State University, Pampanga State Agricultural University, University of the Philippines Los Baños, University of the Philippines Manila, Visayas State University, University of Eastern Philippines, Central Mindanao University, West Visayas State University, Chevron and SEAOHUN.

WVSU explores collab with KMUTT in Thailand

West Visayas State University continues to expand its reach in the fulfillment of its mandates in instruction, research, and extension.
 
With its International and Local Linkages Offie (ILLO) Director Prof. Edel Subong-Csoka , VP for Research, Innovation, and Extension Dr. Greta Gallo Gabinete, campus administrators Dr. Dominador Lisao of the College of Agriculture and Forestry (CAF) and Dr. Mary Josephine Bautista (Lambunao), and CAF Internationalization focal person Prof. Rod Reynan Gallego Laspiñas, WVSU had a discussion with King Mungkot’s University Of Technology Thonburi in Thailand regarding possible collaborations between the two institutions.
 
The WVSU delegation was welcomed by KMUTT led by Dr. Julapot Chiravachradej.
The vision for a sustainable society is shared by both schools. #

WVSU eyeing expansion with Kasetsart University

Expanding the horizon of WVSU has always been a vision for its institutional internationalization. And a vision coming true is a milestone worth sharing with the rest of Taga-West.
 
Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz, WVSU president, has always pushed for full force internationalization. With the International and Local Linkages Office (ILLO) headed by Director Ms. Edel Carmela Subong-Csoka, a visit to Kasetsart University in Thailand was made to foster collaborations, most especially in the fields of agriculture and forestry, and forensics.
