WVSU faculty elects new Faculty Association Inc. officers for 2023-2025

The WVSU Faculty Association Incorporated held its election of officers on August 30, 2023, at the Center for Teaching Excellence, with the Oath-taking officiated by WVSU President Joselito Villaruz on September 18, 2023.

The members of the Committee on Election were chaired by Dr. Lea Mae Cabalfin, with the following members: Dr. Arnel Secondes and Prof. Kristoffer Deguma.

This election was witnessed by Vice President of Medical and Allied Sciences, Dr. Celina Gellada, and College of Law Dean, Atty. Pauline Alfuente.

WVSU profs, alumni, win awards in int’l science research conference

Professors of West Visayas State University from the College of Education (WVSU COE) and the College of Arts and Sciences (WVSU CAS) as well as alumni from the COE Graduate School won various awards at the NOSTE 2023 International Research Conference, Training Workshops, and Biennial Convention.

The said event was held at the Plenary Hall of Negros Residences in Bacolod City from Sept. 22-24, 2023, with the theme, “Science as a Tool for Teaching Literacy and Numeracy.”

Winning first place in Cluster 3 of the Best Research Paper category are Roberto Sagge Jr., Mathematics professor and director of the WVSU COE University Learning Assessment Center, together with his fellow researcher Rufino Segura Jr. who is also an alumnus of the WVSU COE Graduate School. Their paper is titled, “Designing and Developing Video Lessons in Mathematics Using Code-Switching: A Design-Based Research.” Prof. Sagge was also the second Best Oral Presenter in the said Cluster.

Winning second place in the same Cluster is WVSU retired Science professor Ignacio Tibajares Jr. and his research partner John Mark Burila, also an alumnus of the WVSU COE Graduate School, with their paper “Musichemistry on Grade Eight Learners’ Motivation, Engagement and Proficiency in Chemistry.” Burila also won first Best Oral Presenter of the said Cluster.

Also winning third place for Best Research Paper and second-Best Oral Presenter in the Cluster 1 Category is Prof. Joey Elechicon from the WVSU College of Arts and Sciences with his paper, “Interactive Science Notebook: Developing Learners’ Conceptual Understanding in Biology”.

Winning second place as Best Research Paper for Cluster 8 is WVSU COE Prof. Chive Gabasa and his research partner Stephan Jade Navarro for their paper, “Navigating Cultural Waters: Intercultural Competence and Experiences of SEA Teachers in a Laboratory High School.”

NOSTE or the National Organization of Science Teachers and Educators (NOSTE), according to its website (https://nosteonline.org/?page_id=10), was formed in 2011 by a group of science teachers and educators based in Iloilo City that aims to provide professional development opportunities to teachers in basic and higher education. Formerly known as the Association of Elementary Science Teachers and Educators of the Philippines (AESTEP), the new organization has widened its membership to include science and mathematics teachers and educators at all levels.

WVSU College of Dentistry advances dental ed with CHED LAKAS 2022-001 Simulation Based Ed Project

The West Visayas State University College of Dentistry (WVSU-COD) is making significant strides in dental education through its participation in the CHED LAKAS 2022-001 SBE Project.

This initiative encompasses a Collaborative Capacity Building Workshop and Pilot Testing of Simulation-Based Education (SBE)-Centered Modules / Simulated Clinical Experience on Dental Medicine.

The project is under the leadership of Dr. Liza Assumpta M. Jover, dean of the WVSU – COD; Dr. Lester Joseph G. Cardenas, associate dean for Administration; and Dr. Ma. Rosvia B. Bagaforo, associate dean for Academics.

The 3-day event, taking place from Sept. 25 to 27, 2023, was held at Diversion 21 Hotel and WVSU – Main Campus in Iloilo City, Philippines, with the theme “Optimizing Simulation-based Education, Training, Collaboration, and Research – A Focus on Technology-driven Teaching and Learning Strategies.”

This initiative aims to enhance the current philosophies and modalities employed in dental and oral health simulation-based education (SBE) to meet the demands of competency-based pedagogy.

SBE involves the use of simulations to provide safe clinical encounters for students and faculty to bridge the gap between theory to practice.

The WVSU College of Medicine, College of Nursing, and College of Dentistry, in collaboration with experts from other higher education institutions, aim to ensure the feasibility of scenarios and the content of SBE-centered modules before their implementation in the curriculum. This proactive approach ensures that students receive the best possible education in the field of Dental Medicine.

The general objectives of the workshop include the pilot testing of scenarios and module content in various areas of dental medicine, such as Anesthesiology, Dental Public Health, Oral Surgery, Restorative Dentistry, and Oral Pathology.

In a significant development for the project, West Visayas State University and the University of the Philippines Manila – College of Dentistry, being the lead implementing universities, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate in the further development of the CHED LAKAS 2022-001 SBE Project.

This collaboration between the two esteemed educational institutions underscores the importance of joint efforts in advancing dental education in the Philippines.

The said MOU aims to further enhance the collaboration between the two universities in researches and extension projects, seminar workshops, exchange of faculty, and sharing of best practices.

This workshop was also participated by the faculty of Iloilo Doctor’s College – COD and the Faculty and students of WVSU – COD.

The CHED LAKAS 2022-001 SBE Project represents a significant step forward in advancing dental education and promoting the use of technology-driven teaching and learning strategies.

Furthermore, it underscores the commitment of WVSU COD to provide the highest quality education to its students, preparing them to excel in the dynamic field of dental medicine.

This collaborative effort is expected to pave the way for improved dental education in the Philippines, ultimately benefiting both students and patients.

The journey of excellence continues: WVSU keeps ISO 9001:2015 certification after 2nd Surveillance Audit

“The West Visavas State University Quality Management System will be recommended for continued certification to ISO 9001:2015.”

The above was the conclusion of the 5-member team of auditors of SOCOTEC Certification Philippines, Inc. that audits the ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems that WVSU uses to develop mechanisms for continuous improvement and customer satisfaction.

The audit sites on Sept. 19 were the following campuses: WVSU Main, Pototan, and Janiuay.

The Lambunao campus and the continuation of the main campus audits were done on Sept. 20, 2023.

WVSU getting the certification means that it has demonstrated its commitment to implementing and maintaining a quality management system (QMS) that conforms to the standards set out in ISO 9001:2015.

It generally signifies the following: ensuring the quality of its education, services, and processes; continual improvement; consistency in processes; meeting customer expectations; having a robust system for documenting its processes and procedures; and likely enhancement of the university’s reputation both nationally and internationally.

The “2nd Surveillance Audit” means that the university has undergone at least two rounds of audits to verify its compliance with ISO 9001:2015. Passing these audits, according to the SOCOTEC, means that the university’s QMS has demonstrated its effectiveness over time.

The Opening Meeting was held on Sept. 19, 2023 from 9 a.m to 10 a.m. at the Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) with Lead Auditor Anna Theresa Manlangit explaining the conduct of audit and the schedule.

With Manlangit were support auditors Jose Emmanuel Thomas Diel, Maria Fatima Mercurio, Michael Matundan, and Arcel Andres.

As OIC president of WVSU, Dr. Porfirio Barlas said that the University takes the SOCOTEC’s findings seriously and will thoroughly review and address them.

On the other hand, Dr. Celina Gellada, Vice President for Medical and Allied Sciences, said in her closing remarks that WVSU stakeholders are subjecting their system to the audit “in the spirit of partnership for the betterment of our University and to achieve our set goals and objectives.”

“This visit gave us the opportunity to re-examine, reconcile and modify our processes not only to improve our efficiency, productivity, and performance  but also give higher visibility, brand image, and enhanced reputation to WVSU,” said Dr. Gellada.

ISO 9001:2015 is an internationally recognized standard for quality management systems (QMS). It sets out the criteria for a QMS and is used by organizations of all types and sizes to demonstrate their commitment to delivering quality products and services. The “2015” in the name refers to the year it was last updated.

WVSU-ILS students win two awards in dancesport competition in Thailand

Showcasing world-class talents, dancers from the WVSU Integrated Laboratory School (ILS) won places during the 12th King’s Cup Thailand Open Dancesport Competition 2023, held at the Indoor Stadium, Huamark, Authority of Thailand on Sept. 9-10, 2023.

Kealynn Therese F. Castigador and Ruel Cyann M. Paclibar, both Grade 10 students, secured third place in the Modern Standard Junior II Category.

Edging out a total of 16 couples, the pair navigated the international ballroom arena through Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Foxtrot, and Quickstep.

Completing the two-award sweep, Czkha Gyle J. Garrucha and Cliff Justin L. Pareja, both Grade 11 students, achieved seventh place out of 27 couples in the Modern Standard Youth Open Category.

Garrucha and Pareja performed the dances Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Foxtrot, and Quickstep.

Prof. Liberty R. Porras and Mr. Jose Michael Angelo Cabarles are official coaches of the ILS dancesport team.

Simulation and Experiential Learning Workshop in WVSU ends; capacitates health educators

The West Visayas State University in collaboration with UP Manila and MSU-General Santos through a grant from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) LAKAS Project “Optimising Simulation-based Education (SBE), Training, Collaboration and Research – A Focus on Technology-driven Teaching & Learning Strategies” held a five-day Simulation and Experiential Learning Workshop here at WVSU. It concluded at the College of Medicine on September 8, 2023.

The International Center for AIDS Care and Treatment Programs (ICAP) at Columbia University facilitated the conduct of the activity, during which they organized a series of lectures, scenarios, and workshops on integrating SBE to the curriculum.

On behalf of WVSU University President Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz, Dr. Celina Gellada, Vice President of Medical and Allied Sciences, expressed her gratitude to the facilitators and all the Higher Educational Institutions that participated in the event.

“When you return to your respective universities and colleges, you should also share what you have learned here with your colleagues, students, and other stakeholders that SBE will helps ensure student and patient safety” said Dr. Gellada.

A total of six HEIs from different regions took part in the learning workshop: Cebu Normal University (CNU), Northern Negros State College of Science and Technology (NONESCOST), Mindanao State University (MSU) – Gensan, Central Philippine University (CPU), University of Southern Mindanao (USM), and West Visayas State University (WVSU).

Yokohama counterparts visit College of Nursing for collab on maternal and child health care transcultural exchange program.

With the WVSU’s College of Nursing (CON) collaborating with the Global Health Program in Nursing 2023 with Yokohama City University, it welcomed its Japanese counterparts this morning, Sept. 8, 2023, at the CON Amphitheater.

The focus of the discussions were maternal and child health care. Among the topics expounded by the Japanese counterparts were Japan’s Healthcare Care system and Maternal Health in Japan.

On WVSU CON’s side, Richard Olano, a level 4 nursing student, talked about “Unveiling Realities: Landscape of Maternal and Child Health in PH” while Janna Yson, a level 2 nursing student, discussed “MalaSAKIT: A review and update of the PH Health Care Delivery System”.

The Japanese visitors from Yokohama City University were composed of three members of the faculty, two directors of birth centers, two midwifery students, 10 nursing students, and one interpreter.

WVSU’s College of Education mentors train managers of Child Development Centers and other child care program

𝘗𝘩𝘰𝘵𝘰𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘝𝘚𝘜 𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘨𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘌𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯

Selected municipal, city, and provincial social welfare and development officers all over the country get to learn new competencies with the 16th Batch of  Leading and Managing an Integrated Early Childhood Care and Development Program (LMIEP) currently being held in Cebu City from Sept. 4 to Sept. 8, 2023.

This program is spearheaded by West Visayas State University College of Education and the Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) Council.

The said program aims to enhance the participants’ competencies to efficiently and effectively lead and manage their respective Child Development Centers (CDCs) and other ECCD programs.

The LMIEP program comes in 3 phases. The first phase was on May 29 to June 2, 2023 at Golden Prince Hotel  in Cebu City while the second phase was delivered online and the 3rd phase is on Sept. 4 to 8 at Quincentennial Hotel in Cebu City . 

Learning mentors from WVSU are the following: Prof. Marievic Violeta, Dr. Myra Angelie Oliveros, Dr. Mary June Pineda, Dr. Verna Jade Janay, and Dr. Rosalea Cornelia de Leon.

On the other hand, members of the management team are COE Dean Ricky Magno, Dr. Daisy Rosano, and Prof. Rossini Monsalud.

WVSU previously conducted batches 8, 13, and 14.

HAPPENING NOW: Simulation and Experiential Learning Workshop in WVSU to ‘revolutionize’ health education

In a collaboration aimed at ‘revolutionizing’ health education, a national Simulation and Experiential Learning Workshop is taking place today, September 4, 2023, and will conclude on September 8, 2023, at the Auditorium of Roxas Hall, College of Medicine.

This workshop has been made possible through the partnership of ICAP Global Health, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), the University of the Philippines – Manila, Mindanao State University – General Santos (MSU-GenSan), and WVSU.

The primary focus of the workshop is Simulation-Based Education (SBE), utilizing cutting-edge teaching methodology that incorporates technology and experiential learning to offer safe yet immersive clinical encounters for students, educators, and prospective patients.

The program, which commenced at 9 a.m. today, is being attended by 35 faculty members from other public and private institutions, including MSU-GenSan, University of Southern Mindanao, Central Philippine University, Iloilo Doctors College, Cebu Normal University, and Northern Negros State College of Science and Technology. Additionally, faculty members from WVSU’s College of Medicine, College of Nursing, and College of Dentistry are participating.

The facilitators from ICAP at Columbia University include Dr. Getch Kassa, senior staff associate; Ms. Claire Raether, senior training and education specialist; Ms. Heather Fosburg, senior project officer; and Dr. Susan Michaels-Strasser, senior director of Human Resources for Health. Joining them is Dr. Pule Moabi, principal and simulation specialist from Scott College of Nursing in Lesotho.

According to its website, ICAP, based at Columbia University, “has operations in more than 40 countries and is a leader in global public health, internationally known for tackling the world’s toughest health challenges—from HIV to tuberculosis, from malaria to maternal and child health, and the growing problem of non-communicable diseases, and most recently, the COVID-19 pandemic. Through innovative research, collaborative technical assistance, and a focus on strengthening health systems, ICAP helps to create better, more accessible health services to reduce the burden of illness on people and communities.”

SBE has garnered attention for its potential to offer hands-on training devoid of the inherent risks associated with real-life medical situations, a factor that is crucial in producing highly competent and confident healthcare professionals.

The “Simulation and Experiential Learning Workshop” project comprises a series of workshops designed to equip the present and future healthcare workforce with the skills needed to effectively address diverse patient needs. By integrating Competency-Based Education (CBE) and high-fidelity simulators (HFS), the project aims to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and practical implementation.

WVSU bags 7 awards during the 56th ASEAN Anniversary and Exhibit

Dominating the 56th ASEAN Founding Anniversary and Exhibit, West Visayas State University bagged seven awards for the cultural booth competition and others held at SM City Iloilo, September 1, 2023.

WVSU garnered the following awards: Most Impactful Booth, Best ASEAN Story, Best Storyteller, Best in National Costume – Group Category, Best in National Costume – Individual Category(Male), and Best in National Costume – Individual Category (Female).

Overall, the university was recognized second runner-up in the Best Booth competition among 10 participating universities in Region VI.

The WVSU booth preparation was led by the director of the WVSU International and Local Linkages Office (ILLO) Prof. Edel Carmela Subong Csoka in collaboration with Dr. Arturo Souribio who oversaw the booth’s landscape conceptualization.

On the other hand, Prof. Liberty Porras, director of Dance and Cultural Affairs, with Prof. Ryan Puljanan spearheaded the artistic direction of the cultural performances.

Different colleges and external campuses also showed their support for the success of the ASEAN Exhibit.

The 56th anniversary of the founding of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was celebrated during a grand opening at SM City Iloilo on August 29, 2023, participated by 13 Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) in Region VI representing their designated ASEAN countries.

Themed “ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth,” the anniversary celebration echoed the pivotal role of the ASEAN community in the ever-evolving global landscape.

“We need to be at the forefront because higher education is very important. That is something I need to highlight this afternoon”, said Dr. Raul Alvarez Jr., Director IV of CHEDRO VI, emphasizing the essential role of Higher Educational Institutions in attaining global peace.
