Director Anton Juan proposes migrant-themed musical at WVSU

International theater and film director Anton Juan visited West Visayas State University on March 28 to propose a musical focusing on Filipino migrants, to be performed by the College of PESCAR’s, TeatroTayo.
 
During his meeting with WVSU President Joselito F. Villaruz, Juan expressed appreciation for the leadership of TeatroTayo directors Jemuel Garcia and Ryan Puljanan, both faculty members of the College of PESCAR, under the guidance of Dean Porferio J. Barlas.
 
The proposed musical aims to highlight the experiences of Filipino migrants, furthering TeatroTayo’s commitment to producing socially relevant performances.
 
This initiative follows the company’s recent adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Titus Andronicus,” titled “Titus Tan,” which received acclaim for its innovative approach.
 
Juan’s collaboration with WVSU seeks to enrich the university’s cultural offerings and provide students with opportunities to engage in meaningful theatrical productions.

Film icon Nick Deocampo graces WVSU

Filmmaker and Film Historian Prof. Nick Deocampo visits West Visayas State University, together with representatives from the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) on March 28, 2025.
 
During a meeting with the WVSU President Dr. Joselito F. Villaruz and WVSU College of Communication (COC) Dean Dr. Rona Dhel C. Alingasa, Prof. Deocampo shared the sociocultural and educational importance of film archiving and preservation.
 
He also emphasized that the collaborative work he is doing with Ms. Mary Kareen Gancio, faculty of WVSU-COC Broadcasting Division, and FDCP in film and media archiving requires complete institutional support.
 
Representatives from FDCP were also present during the meeting, including Korina Dela Cruz, Lemor Sobrevega, and COC alumni Sonnet Llaguno.
 
The partnership between WVSU College of Communication and FDCP, with the guidance of Prof.
 
Deocampo aims to strengthen the promotion and appreciation of local films as well as develop the skills of students in purposive storytelling.
 
Prof. Deocampo arrived in WVSU fresh from his talk, “Pagtahal: Talk on Film Historiography and Archiving” with Ms. Julie Nealaga, an audiovisual archivist and the head of Probe Archives, at Cinematheque Iloilo last March 27, 2025.

CBM Hosts on Seminar on US Market Strategies, Dr. Wadsworth Shares Expert Insights

A bold initiative to equip future business leaders with strategies fit for the global market took place as the College of Business and Management, in partnership with the CBM-Graduate School Student Council, hosted an enlightening seminar themed “Innovating for the US Market: Strategies for Product Development.”
 
The event was graced by Dr. Frank Wadsworth, a renowned professor from Indiana, USA, earlier this afternoon at the WVSU University Boardroom.
 
In an exclusive interview with The Innovator after delivering his lecture, Dr. Wadsworth shared his hopes for the attendees’ future business endeavors, stating, “Hopefully, [they continue] to be curious—whether it’s developing a product or just about learning how to run a business. And through that learning, they [will] become more efficient and effective in running a business.”
 
Even without a PowerPoint presentation, Dr. Wadsworth captivated the audience with his dynamic and engaging delivery, focusing on the real-life applications of business strategies.
 
As the event concluded, it successfully achieved its objectives: enhancing participants’ understanding of product development strategies for the US market, providing practical knowledge on market entry and business model adaptation, and fostering engagement with an industry expert for knowledge exchange and industrial development.

WVSU celebrates National Women’s Month with dance performances during the flag-raising ceremony

The West Visayas State University (WVSU) College of Dentistry, in partnership with the Gender and Development (GAD) Office, held a special flag-raising ceremony on the first Monday of the month to mark the National Women’s Month Celebration (NWMC) with the theme, “WE for Gender Equality and Inclusive Society”.
 
Dr. Jeanette Simpas, director of WVSU GAD, invited all students, faculty, and staff of the university to take part in the month-long celebration and attend to the activities prepared by the GAD office and its partner colleges and units.
 
As part of the NWM celebration, the College of PESCAR (COP) students led a fitness dance at the Unity Park which was participated by the attendees of the flag raising ceremony.
 
Grupo Del Oeste from WVSU COP also gave the university a special performance of their piece, “Mangroves and the Moon,” which recently won 1st runner-up at the Sinamba sa Regatta during the 52nd Iloilo-Guimaras Paraw Regatta Festival on March 1.
 
Led by the Philippine Commission on Women, the NWMC carries the sub-theme, “Babae sa Lahat ng Sektor, Aangat ang Bukas sa Bagong Pilipinas,” and highlights the ongoing pursuit of gender equality and women’s empowerment in the Philippines and around the world.

WVSU library science students gain hands-on experience through Angelicum partnership

West Visayas State University’s Bachelor of Library and Information Science program has partnered with Angelicum School Iloilo to provide students with real-world training opportunities.
 
Through a memorandum of agreement signed on Feb. 26, BLIS students will complete their on-the-job training at Angelicum’s library and related offices, gaining practical experience essential to their field.
 
The signing ceremony took place at the University Learning Resource Center, with key representatives from both institutions in attendance.
 
Among them were WVSU officials, including Vocational Placement Coordinator Ludylie S. Buendia, College of Communications and Information Technology Dean Ma. Beth C. Concepcion, OJT Coordinator Cheryl Ann N. Feliprada, and OJT Adviser Elra Di M. Madalogdog.
 
Angelicum School Iloilo was represented by Principal Rev. Fr. Paul Lovell Javier, OP, LPT, MSM, and librarian Noreen Gallo.
 
The partnership strengthens industry-academe collaboration, ensuring BLIS students gain exposure to professional library operations while fulfilling their academic requirements.
